Thistle lock horns with Morton for tomorrow’s Ladbrokes Championship fixture with both sides looking to put an end to a poor run of form. Cammy Palmer took time out from his morning gym session to speak to ptfc.co.uk and he started by reflecting on the quirk of Thistle, without a point at home so far, against Morton, without a point on the road this campaign.
“It’s weird how things like that crop up in football. We’re looking for three points for ourselves and that’s what we have to focus on. I don’t think either team expected to be on a run like this but we have to improve our home form and that’s what we’ll be looking to do by starting to turn things around.”
After such a disappointing result last week, the manager issued a rallying call that a strong week of training was required to secure a jersey for tomorrow’s match, which Cammy has embraced.
“It’s hard to put your finger on one thing that we need to improve from last week. It’s a number of small details we need to work on. As a squad we all try to do our bit, pull together and start getting that feel good factor back at home.
“I try my hardest in every training session so nothing changes for me. It might sharpen the focus for a couple of players but there are places available every week, it’s all about making that impact on a Saturday afternoon when you cross the white line to begin the match. Everyone has been at it this week and we’ve all been pushing each other ahead of this weekend’s match.
“Sometimes when you are in situations you can forget about things. The manager has just brought it back to one goal; winning on a Saturday. Everything else doesn’t matter, we’ve just been looking to train well, go into the game feeling a bit more confident in ourselves and picking up the points.”
Thistle head into a run of two cup ties after this weekend’s Ladbrokes Championship fixture and Palmer admits it would be a big boost to finally pick up home points.
“We go into two cup matches after tomorrow’s game. I’ll miss the Stenhousemuir one but the Penicuik game is a big one as the Scottish Cup is a very big trophy in Scotland. It’d be good to go into those games on the back of three points in the league with a home win and get that monkey off the back.”
The Northern Ireland under 21 cap heads off to Belfast after Saturday’s match and he is looking forward to getting on international duty.
“It’s always a pleasure to get called up, even if I lost my place in the Thistle team the last time I went. It’s good to meet up with the group in Belfast, we’re up against top quality players so it is always a learning experience even if it does disrupt the consistency of playing at your club. A lot of players in the under 21 squad are playing academy football but me and Shea are out their grafting in a first team dressing room where there is lot more on every game. It’s always good to get a bit of international recognition, to go away for a few days and learn from others to bring it back to Thistle and hopefully help improve us all going into the winter.”
