Ahead of this Sunday’s SWPL 2 opening weekend fixture against Glasgow Women at Petershill Park, Partick Thistle Women’s FC have made another addition to their squad in the form of defender, Eleanor Smith.
Smith has been in training with the squad for a short time and has now completed the paperwork that sees her join John Doyle’s side for the 2020 season.
After she finalised the move, we asked Eleanor some quick-fire questions about joining the Jags and the season to come.
1. How did the move to Thistle happen?
Since there have been a lot of changes across many of the clubs in the SWPL, I started to question whether it was time for me to make my own changes. Quite coincidently, John approached me and asked if I’d like to come and train at Thistle. I had worked with John at a former club so I thought I’d go along to see how I enjoyed it.
2. Why did you choose to join Thistle?
Ultimately, I chose Thistle because I enjoyed it from the moment I arrived. This was all down to the welcome I received from players and staff members, the standard of training and the set-up that the club have in place. Within the first training session I felt settled.
3. You’ve been training with the team for a little while, how have you found that?
I’ve really been enjoying the variability and intensity of training. I feel like in a short space of time I’ve been learning and improving from the wealth of talent and experience among the players and coaching team.
4. You spent last season at Glasgow Girls and came up against Thistle in that time. What did you make of the Jags last season from an outsider’s perspective?
They were always a team who were difficult to beat as they were strong and physical but were also very dangerous in front of goal. Thistle played with a purpose and although they had a strategy, they were adaptable to the game and played to win.
5. How would you describe your style of play in three words?
Dynamic, proactive and creative.
6. We start the league season on Sunday against your former team, how do you feel about that as a first game?
More nervous than usual but I’m really looking forward to kicking off our league campaign, in what I think will be a very competitive and exciting game.
7. What do you think of the expanded league this year with ten teams now involved in the SWPL 2?
It’s great to see the league expand and I’m really looking forward to playing against new and different teams who will be challenging us in different ways every week – it’s a lot of exciting uncertainty!
Kick-off will be 12pm on Sunday at Petershill Park with ticket prices as follows:
Adults – £5
Concessions – £3
