Docherty wants Jags to be unforgiving

Partick Thistle travel to Station Park this Saturday as they look to return to winning ways following last weekend’s goalless draw against Dumbarton. The Jags failed to capitalise on their complete dominance against the Sons which included more than 20 attempts at goal but full focus is now on the clash with the Loons in Angus and the next three points on offer. Thistle skipper Ross Docherty spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the game, starting by reflecting on last week’s stalemate:

“There were plenty of chances for us against Dumbarton, we all know we should have won that game. Everyone watching it would have seen how dominant we were and how in control of the game we were.

“It is a real frustration for us at the moment because even when we are winning, we should be scoring more. It’s tough to work on something like that because in training we are finding the back of the net freely and these types of chances are going in.

“There is a positive side to it all in the sense that we are dominating games. We have shown that we are able to move the ball well and we know what to do with it in possession, however, we need to become more clinical to make sure we win games like that when we dominate so much.”

The Jags’ number 23 was full of praise for the Firhill defence who kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet and reduced Dumbarton to just one attempt in 90 minutes.

“The clean sheets are massive for us, it’s a brilliant run we want to keep going. It gives us a great platform to go and play from and, again just looking back at the game last Saturday, you see that they hardly had a shot at our goal so if we can continue with that and add more goals at the other end then it’s a recipe for success.”

Docherty will demand his teammates carry similar performance levels into the trip to Forfar but with that added final touch that was missing against Jim Duffy’s side.

“We just need to add that final element. Thinking back on the chances, we had the penalty but also James Penrice, Connor Murray, Shea Gordon, Darren Brownlie and Richard Foster all had good opportunities. Their ‘keeper made a couple of really good saves too.

“The performances now, compared to the start of the league season, are night and day. It gives us confidence knowing we are on top in games and we are continuing to create really good chances as well. There is enough to be positive about, we just need to be unforgiving in front of goal.”

Forfar sit bottom of the League One table ahead of this round of fixtures but Doc knows the team can’t afford to underestimate the Sky Blues.

“We’ve seen plenty of upsets already in this league season. The game against Dumbarton was a good example; they came into the game on a run of defeats but we weren’t clinical in front of goal and they managed to get a point so we need to make sure we take the chances we create this weekend and hopefully we’ll come away with all three.”
