Vote now for your McCrea Mortgages January Moment of the Month

Last week Thistle fans submitted their nominations for a special retro McCrea Mortgages January Moment of the Month award.

Nominations could have included a favourite match, memorable goal or anything else associated with the Club – the only rule was that it must have taken place in the month of January.

Having received a variety of nominations we have eight candidates for Jags fans to vote for this week.

Voting is now open on the Partick Thistle twitter account and through ptfc.co.uk using the “world cup” elimination format. Ties will run for 24 hours with the nomination with most votes moving on to the next round until we get a winner.

Our eight nominations which will enter in to the first round of voting are:

  1. Scottish Cup underdog success against St Mirren – January 1989. A midweek trip to Love Street saw Thistle overcome the odds to knock out the Paisley Saints. A double from Gerry McCoy aided by a John Mitchell strike saw Thistle run out 3-1 winners in a famous replay under the Paisley floodlights. Click here to vote for this moment.
  2. Thistle’s 16-0 Scottish Cup victory against Royal Albert – January 1931. This resounding victory remains Thistle’s highest competitive winning margin 90 years on. It was an afternoon of goals for the 5,000 supporters who made the trip to Firhill. John Simpson netted nine times as Thistle, who would finish fourth in the league, secured Scottish Cup progression. 3. Scottish Cup thriller against Hibernian – January 1962. After a 2-2 draw at Firhill, Thistle headed to Leith for the replay. Goals from Joe McBride, Tommy Ewing and George Smith saw Thistle win a thrilling end-to-end cup tie, edging the Edinburgh side 3-2. Click here to vote for this moment.
  4. Calum Campbell’s hat-trick against Kilmarnock – January 1991. A New Year trip to Rugby Park saw Thistle return to action after being sidelined for a number of weeks through postponements. Calum Campbell bagged a Thistle hat-trick in another 3-2 success to take the points back to Glasgow. Click here to vote for this moment.
  5. A Jags rout at Brockville – January 2002. John Lambie’s Jags travelled to Brockville flying high at the top of the First Division. A scintillating first half performance extended Thistle’s winning run to six matches. A Scott McLean double and Danny Lennon strike put the Jags in command at half time before Martin Hardie added the fourth on a terrific afternoon on the road to the title. 6. Kris Doolan scoring four goals against Hamilton Accies – January 2015. A cold midweek night at Firhill was the stage for Kris Doolan to become the first player in the Premiership era to score the perfect hat-trick. A close-range finish opened the scoring before a trademark Doolan touch, turn and clinical finish doubled the lead. The hat-trick was secured in sensational fashion with a back heel into the corner of the net from 10 yards. Just moments later the quartet was complete with a deft header on a great night to be a Jag. Click here to vote for this moment.
  7. Chris Erskine’s marvellous chip against Falkirk – January 2013. In a season of spectacular goals this was arguably the best. James Craigen threaded the pass through to Erskine. As Bairns defenders collided on the edge of the box, Erskine kept his composure to chip the ball high beyond the goalkeeper, putting the seal on a 4-1 victory. Click here to vote for this moment.
  8. Tennent’s Sixes success – January 1993. An incredible weekend at the SECC saw Thistle return to Firhill with the trophy. Two days of entertainment with a fantastic atmosphere saw a strong Thistle side compete and progress through to the final stages. A thrilling final saw Thistle emerge victorious against Airdrieonians to win a trophy that we hold to this day! Click here to vote for this moment.

One Thistle fan with a host of happy Jaggy January memories is McCrea Financial Services Managing Director, Douglas McCrea, longstanding supporter of the club and sponsor of this award, through McCrea Mortgages.

Speaking after seeing the eight nominations, Douglas said: “As someone who started following Thistle in the 1970s this list has brought back a lot of January memories. There are eight worthy candidates but the one that stands out for me is the Chic Charnley inspired Scottish Cup replay at Love Street. We were in the league below and more than 9,000 were at Firhill for the first game. Some 8,000 were then at Love Street with a cracking red and yellow support to witness a brilliant Jags performance. I also remember the great Lambino telling our support to fill their boots at the bookies (I think we were 9/1 which is bonkers). It’s nights like that which remind you why we love Thistle.”

Vote now for your favourite in each of our first round ties to make sure your favourite Thistle moment makes it through to the next round.
