One hundred and forty five years ago today, Partick Thistle Football Club played its first ever recorded match.
The opponents were Valencia, however this was no European glamour tie, it was a friendly played in the Kelvingrove area of the city against a quaintly named junior side.
The score that day? One nil to the Jags. And, no, Robert Reid wasn’t there.
The rest, as they say, is history (and Robert is your man for that!). What has followed in the 145 years since is the enduring presence of an iconic Glasgow football club for so many to fall in love with.
There’s been cup wins, titles, promotions and European adventures. There’s been heroes, highlights and upsets under floodlights. There’s also been heartache for Partick – but please call us Thistle – which has built the character and then some.
There’s been an emotional attachment for supporters which is like no other – enjoyed by generations of families, enabling new and lifelong friendships to be forged, bringing people together – sometimes even in marriage and partnership, all united in red and yellow.
There’s been so many before us who are no longer with us but we know they are still wearing their Thistle scarf, tie and bonnet – once a Jag always a Jag.
The one constant throughout these 145 years has been our football club, what a journey it has been since that inaugural match.
Today or tonight, we can all toast – with soft drink or something stronger – Partick Thistle Football Club, forever and ever.
