Dunfermline Athletic are the visitors to Maryhill tomorrow afternoon as Thistle look for the three points that will almost secure their promotion play-off space. The Pars have ideas of their own for the points and head to Glasgow looking to put space between them and the relegation slots. Assistant Manager, Neil Scally, spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the game.
“We know going into the weekend that Dunfermline will be a tough game. John Hughes has them playing well and we know that they’ve hit a bit of form recently. On top of that they are fighting to avoid finishing in those bottom two spots so we’re expecting it to be a difficult match.
“Obviously the last time we played Dunfermline we really weren’t good enough and that result really hurt especially after we go in front we should really look to build on that and put the pressure on them but they get back into the game with an unfortunate own goal and then they use that momentum to go on and win the game so we will be looking to put that result right this weekend when they visit Firhill.”
A last gasp defeat at the hands of Raith Rovers has kept the playoff race alive but Neil knows Thistle hold their destiny in their hands.
“We know that securing a playoff spot is in our hands. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that last week, which is obviously a disappointment, but we know that if we play well and put on a performance on Saturday we can take a big step towards finishing in those playoff positions.
“We had chances to secure our place last weekend and we probably should have taken them and then they obviously go up the other end and grab the winner so the result against Raith obviously stung but we can’t dwell on that as we have two massive games coming up that will define our season.”
With a full week of training between games, Scally reports it is an upbeat camp at Firhill who are looking forward to our last two regular season games.
“The players know that they can be confident heading into the game because ultimately where we finish in the league is dependent on us and how we finish the season. We know we don’t need any favours and the deciding factor for our season is how we finish it. The squad know that they can give the supporters plenty to cheer about on Saturday if we finish the final home league game of the season with all three points.”
Finally, Neil provided us with the latest team news.
“The squad of players we have available for Saturday’s game is much the same as last weekend so it’s good have the core group of players back together and training regularly again and that can only stand us in good stead as we head into the final two games of the season.
“Obviously, we had a couple of weeks where we were missing some players and that really hampered us in terms of the depth of the squad but with those guys back training and back in for contention it will really boost us for these final two matches.”

For the second week in a row Partick Thistle had the chance to secure a spot in the cinch Premiership play-offs as Dunfermline visited Firhill this afternoon.
The Jags missed the chance to confirm a fourth place finish a week ago as Raith won late in Maryhill but they came into a clash with the Pars knowing that even if Raith win, a win of their own would all but book their play-off spot due to their superior goal difference.
Ian McCall made one change to the side which lost to Raith with Tunji Akinola being replaced by Kyle Turner meaning a return to central defence for Lewis Mayo who had started in midfield the previous weekend. Scott Tiffoney passed a late fitness test to take his place on the left wing while Richard Foster was back in the squad after injury, taking a place on the bench.
The Jags came into this game having failed to score in their previous three home games, however, they showed plenty of attacking zeal from the off today with Brian Graham going very close in the 12th minute. Ross Docherty managed to force the ball towards Graham after a battle at the edge of the Pars box and the big striker managed to wriggle past his marker for a clear shot at goal. Polish goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk was out quickly though and was able to block Graham’s effort with his legs.
The home side didn’t have to wait too much longer for the opener though as Ross Docherty struck with 15 minutes on the clock. It came from a Kyle Turner corner as he spotted Docherty’s run to the front post and picked out the captain who flicked the ball goalwards with the outside of his boot. Stolarczyk had started moving across to his near post but couldn’t do enough to keep the ball out as Docherty recorded his fourth goal of the season against Dunfermline.
Just two minutes later there was nearly a second goal for the Maryhill men as Alex Jakubiak worked his way down the right before picking out Brian Graham with a cross. The striker couldn’t control quickly enough to shoot but was able to lay it off for Scott Tiffoney who fired a shot narrowly wide of the target.
The chances then dried up for both teams with Dunfermline controlling more of the possession without posing a serious threat on the Thistle goal and, as such, it was a Thistle mistake which presented them with their first real opening of the game. A bouncing ball and a bit of miscommunication led to Jamie Sneddon and Kevin Holt getting in each other’s way as they sought to make a clearance. Consequently, the ball fell to Lewis McCann with Jamie Sneddon well out of position but Stephen Hendrie was across quickly to make a goal-saving block.
Coming out for the second half, Thistle had the first clear sight of goal. It came following a Ross Docherty shot from 20 yards out which Jakub Stolarczyk parried down towards Alex Jakubiak. The Englishman took the shot on first time with his left foot but sent his effort high over the bar.
Then the game settled into a similar pattern as the first half – a good amount of possession for the away side but without much end-product. In fact, the only other notable effort on goal of the second half came from the hosts in the 83rd minute. Brian Graham got the ball on the left flank and took on Efe Ambrose, getting past the former Celtic man. Graham then tried a right-footed shot from the edge of the box which flew comfortably over the target.
So despite throwing plenty at Thistle, including a four up front formation, Dunfermline weren’t able to trouble Jamie Sneddon much less find an equaliser meaning the Jags claimed all three points.
With Raith winning elsewhere, that means Thistle are three points ahead of the Kirkcaldy side going into the final day with a goal difference which is eight goals better than them. Ian McCall’s men face Ayr United in the regular season finale which is a 7:45pm kick-off at Somerset Park on Friday night.

Ross Docherty proved to be the match-winner this afternoon as his 15th minute strike earned Partick Thistle earned a crucial three points against Dunfermline Athletic at Firhill. The win means that the Jags will be in the promotion play-offs barring a huge goal swing in Raith’s favour on the final day of the season. Brian Graham, Scott Tiffoney and Alex Jakubiak all had chances over the course of the 90 minutes but they couldn’t convert meaning the home side had to defend stoutly to fight off late Dunfermline pressure and claim the three points. Thistle manager Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk after the game:
“It was another game which wasn’t very easy on the eye but I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. We started the game well and got in front through Ross Docherty’s goal and could have potentially been further ahead.
“Dunfermline threw plenty at us in that second half and they were playing with four or even five up front at times so we really had to work for it late on. Last week we conceded a costly goal late on but we did a good job of limiting the chances they had on goal as we saw it out today.”
The gaffer had particular praise for the goalscorer Ross Docherty who netted his seventh goal of the season and his fourth against Dunfermline to decide the contest.
“Doc took his goal brilliantly and the delivery was effective from Kyle Turner. I thought Doc’s overall performance was fantastic too and he was so important to the way we defended in the second half. He put in tackles, won headers and kept taking the pressure off the defence which was invaluable.”
Scott Tiffoney came off at half-time as Robbie Crawford replaced the winger and the manager explained that change of personnel.
“Tiff was struggling a bit with a muscle problem. He had to do a fitness test a couple of hours before the game and we could see from his numbers in the first half that he wasn’t his usual self so we felt it was better to bring Robbie on. Now we’ll assess him next week and hopefully he’ll be ready for Friday, and if not then the Tuesday after that.”
The victory all but confirms Thistle’s place in the cinch Premiership play-offs and McCall feels his side have warranted fourth place this season.
“We know it’s not technically done yet but it would take something incredible to miss out. At the start of the season we were aiming for the top four and to be this close to reaching that is a great feeling. It hasn’t been straightforward; it’s been a bit up and down at times but I think we’ve deserved it based on what we’ve done this season.
“We now go to Ayr next week with a bit of pressure off and we might rest a player or two but we still want to go and win that game. It would be ideal if we can go into the play-offs on a positive note so that’s the aim next week.”

Thistle lead at the break. We've had the chances to add to our lead but Dunfermline missed the clearest opportunity during the half when a mix up presented Lewis McCann with an open goal - Steven Hendrie with a vital sliding block.
Comrie clears the John Lambie Stand with a stretching effort on the corner of the six yard box.
A mix up at the back almost gifts Dunfermline an equaliser but wonderful defending from Hendrie blocks an open goal. The Pars keep the pressure on but Thistle defend well and win a goal kick,
Turner's free kick is cleared with a few Jags lurking ready to pounce. The Pars get the ball forward but clever defending from McKenna gives Sneddon the chance to clear.
Thistle get the corner scrambled clear and break on the Pars. McKenna has a strong run down the right hand side and his cross finds Jakubiak who is penalised for a harsh hand ball,
Dunfermline with their first intent in front of goal. McCann fizzwes a low cross which is missed by everyone. Lawless retrieves it and tees up Chalmers who has a shot blocked by Turner.
Jakubiak does tremendously well to beat Breen. His cross to Graham sees the striker struggle to get the ball out of his feet. He tees up Tiffoney who fires inches wide of target.
A well worked corner from Thistle gives us the lead. A low delivery from Turner is met by Ross Docherty at the front post and he gives it the deftest of flicks to guide it into the net.
Docherty gets the ball into the feet of Graham who shoots under pressure. It's a fantastic save by the feet of Stolarczyk
A flick from Graham finds Jakubiak inside the box but the flag is up for offside. Thistle are shooting towards the City End in the first half this afternoon,
