Following a frustrating defeat at the hands of Greenock Morton, Partick Thistle return to Firhill against Hamilton Accies with the Jags hoping to regain momentum ahead of the cinch Championship run-in. Jags assistant manager Neil Scally sat down with ptfc.co.uk to break down the clash:
“We’re looking forward to getting another game, putting last weekend behind us and starting a new run. Obviously everyone was gutted with the way we lost at Cappielow last weekend but it’s done now and we have to look to bounce back quickly.”
Neil reflected on last weekend’s loss to Greenock Morton and mulled over what went wrong.
“I think we started really well, actually. We had a good goal early on and we deserved the goal at that point in the game but as it went on we didn’t kill the game off and we didn’t play well in terms of possession.
“They put us under a lot of pressure from long balls and long throws and as the game went on they managed to get a couple of goals to flip the game on its head.
“The boys have played a lot of football over the past three weeks or so and I think that finally started to show in that second half. If we could do it again, we’d probably have made more changes earlier but we can’t change what happened now.”
Neil told us about the impact having a midweek without a game has had on the players.
“That was possibly the most frustrating thing about Saturday. We knew if we got through that game then we had a week to recover and we were in a great position. Unfortunately we couldn’t get that result but we’ve still had that extra bit of recovery time which I reckon should serve us well.
“We kept things light at the start of the week and ramped things up on Thursday so the boys should be refreshed come kick-off this weekend.”
Scally spoke about the importance of bouncing back with a positive result against Hamilton following defeat in Inverclyde.
“The games are now beginning to run out. We’re not too far off but you can’t afford two slip-ups in a row realistically so it’s a big game against Hamilton.
“I look at the way things are set up and I think everyone is going to be dropping points between now and the end of the season so it might come down to who can stay the most consistent and scrape wins that other teams can’t. Prior to Saturday we’d been doing that well so we need to get back to it.
“We’ve had close games against Hamilton the last two times and I think you have to expect more of the same this time. Every team in the league has shown an ability to pick up big results so it’s really difficult to predict what’s going to happen. All we know is that we’re good enough to win any game when we’re at our best so hopefully we’ll see the boys back on top form this week.”
Neil also shared an update on the team news ahead of tomorrow’s game.
“Richard Foster has picked up another little knock which will probably mean missing some time which is a blow. Scott Tiffoney is still out although he’s been making progress and has started doing some running so we’re hopeful he won’t be too much longer.”

Hamilton came to Firhill for the second time this season as Partick Thistle looked to bounce back from a late defeat at Cappielow last weekend.
The Jags had taken seven points from three games against Accies so far this season with the most recent meeting ending 2-2 at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.
Ian McCall’s squad was depleted ahead of the clash and as such the Thistle manager had to make a three enforced alterations to the previous week’s XI. Brian Graham, Richard Foster and Alex Jakubiak all dropped out with the Jakubiak picking up an injury in the warm-up having been named in the starting line-up. Juan Alegria was the number 10’s late replacement while Tunji Akinola and Robbie Crawford stepped in for the other two absentees.
Thistle started the game poorly as the away side put them under a good amount of early pressure. Just three minutes in Hamilton had their first shot on goal as Andy Ryan was his effort from 20 yards saved easily by Jamie Sneddon.
That pattern continued as the game moved on with several shots coming in from just outside the Thistle box, though for the time being the hosts were able to get blocks in just in time.
The resolve wouldn’t last long, however, and Accies took the lead in the 19th minute through a fairly strange goal. Tunji Akinola played the ball back to Jamie Sneddon and the Thistle goalkeeper’s attempted kick up the pitch was blocked by David Moyo sending it high into the air. Sneddon couldn’t collect the ball as it dropped from the sunny sky in Maryhill and Moyo was sharply onto it. He then cleverly rolled it across goal for Andy Ryan who completed the job by tapping home into an empty net.
After the opener, the home side seemed to be moving in the right direction with a bit more possession in the Accies half but that didn’t translate into many chances with the best sight of goal coming after 37 minutes when Kyle Turner fired well over the bar from just outside the box.
In the end, Thistle offensive inactivity would be punished when Hamilton struck again on the stroke of half-time. A poor Sneddon clearance was sent back Thistle way and landed at the feet of David Moyo. The Zimbabwean went one-on-one with Tunji Akinola and, after a quick shift to his left, fired a low shot across goal into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 and two goals against the Maryhill men this season; this one a bit more meaningful than the other.
Having ended the first half with a goal, the visitors almost started the second period the same way. The Jags gave the ball away barely 30 seconds after the restart and Kieran MacDonald was able to rush down the left flank as a consequence. He fizzed a low cross into the front post area where David Moyo met it but, thankfully for Thistle, he flicked it over the crossbar.
The third goal of the game wasn’t far away though and in the 50th minute Accies got it. It was Kieran MacDonald corner which led to the goal with a well-placed ball to the back post being nodded back into the danger area by Mihai Popescu where it was met by Andy Ryan. The former Dunfermline man struck it on the bounce with his left foot and managed to find a gap between the mass of bodies in the goalmouth to put his team three to the good.
Things then went from bad to worse for the Jags as Hamilton made it four in the 63rd minute as they began to really enjoy their afternoon. Moyo was involved again with his lifted ball towards Andrew Winter not dealt with properly by Steven Bell as he tried to head it back to Jamie Sneddon. That allowed Winter to race onto it and lob the ball over the goalkeeper.
With the game well and truly over just after the hour mark, it made for a lowkey end to the match. The only real moment of note being Ben Stanway replacing Cammy Smith with 20 minutes to go as the Thistle Weir Youth Academy graduate made his league debut for the club.
The game finished 4-0 with Hamilton beating Thistle for the first time this season and Thistle suffering a second consecutive defeat in the cinch Championship. They’ll look to bounce back in midweek as they travel to face Dunfermline at East End Park. That game is a 7:05pm kick-off and will be broadcast on BBC Scotland.

An afternoon to forget for Thistle.
Fulton comes off his line to claim a Bannigan cross.
Turner's corner is cleared as far as Stanway at the edge of the box and he sees his shot blocked by a defender.
Mullin whips over the corner and Hamilton have the chance of a fifth but the ball drops wide of goal.
A Popescu shot bobbles in front of Sneddon but he is able to complete an easy save at his left hand post.
There is a chance for Hendrie but he drags his effort well wide of goal.
Turner's corner is cleared
Thistle win their first corner of the game.
It's four. Winter is quickly onto a short headed pass back and he lifts the ball over Sneddon's head and into the net.
Sneddon catches the corner underneath his crossbar.
Crowd: 2,567. Well it's a bit less now.
Thistle are unable to defend the corner. The ball falls to Ryan and he finds the back of the net. An already extremely difficult job has just become all but impossible as the fans stream for the exits.
Sneddon is able to block Ryan's fierce shot.
Nearly a third for Hamilton at the start of the half. A cross comes over from the left and Moyo is unlucky not to see his shot hit target at least.
Change at the break for Thistle.
Hard to sum up that 45 minutes other than to say it has been very, very poor from a Thistle perspective. It is hard to see a way back into the game at this moment and Thistle simply don't have any attacking options on the bench.
Moyo has been a real handful all afternoon but it is far too easy for the big striker who has space inside the box and drills a low shot past Sneddon and into the far corner.
Into additional time.
Moyo isn't too far away from being able to make contact with a Ran cross but Sneddon gathers.
Turner clips the ball into the box. It's cleared to Docherty who knocks the ball on. That is cleared too before Turner gets hold of the ball and sends a shot over the bar from just outside the box.
Smith is fouled giving Thistle a free kick probably just outside of shooting range though Hamilton have a wall of 3 in place.
Smith does well to advance down the right hand side. His low cross is a decent one but is cleared.
It's a good free kick that Fulton does well to punch clear.
Popescu nudges Alegria to the ground and Thistle have a free kick wide on the left.
It's a crazy opener that sums up perfectly the first 20 minutes of a bizarre game of football. Sneddon's clearance is charged down by Moyo. Sneddon isn't able to gather the loose ball and Moyo squares to Ryan for an easy finish.
Turner sends a free kick deep into the Hamilton box where it is well defended.
Alegria is fouled and wins a free kick in the centre circle. Big, ironic, cheers from the home crowd.
Lectured earlier by the referee, Alegria is penalised again for a foul near the halfway line and this time Dallas pulls out his yellow card.
Twice Lawson shoots from the edge of the box and twice his shots are blocked by Thistle defenders.
There is a Hamilton head on the end of Winter's free kick but is an easy job for Sneddon to collect.
Akinola fouls Winter and Hamilton will get a chance to get the ball into the Thistle box.
Hamilton are appealing for something as a cross comes over from the left and deep into the Thistle box. It's been a very strange opening 9 minutes.
Alegria manages to hook a shot towards the Hamilton goal but it is well wide of Fulton's left hand post.
Alegria is back on his feet but Thistle are really struggling in the opening minutes and Sneddon has to save a Ryan shot from the edge of the box.
More worries for Thistle and Alegria is left in a heap ibside the centre circle following a hefty challenge that referee Dallas didn't judge to be a foul.
Not technically a substitution but a very late change to the starting eleven with Alex Jukubiak dropping out just prior to kick-off and Alegria taking his place. Thistle will have just three outfield subs.

It's a beautiful sunny day in Glasgow with Thistle hoping to produce a performance to match the weather as we near the business end of the season.
Thistle will be without the services of Richard Foster and Brian Graham from the side that started at Morton last weekend for today's match with Hamilton.
Robbie Crawford and Tunji Akinola step back into the side and it will be interesting to see precisely what shape Ian McCall's side take this afternoon.
