Match Preview

Partick Thistle v Inverness CT – 30th October 2021

Following consecutive goalless draws against Dunfermline and Greenock Morton, Partick Thistle will be aiming for a return to their attacking best as Inverness visit Firhill this weekend in the cinch Championship. The Caley Jags were knocked off the league summit in midweek after losing to Arbroath at the Caledonian Stadium having led the division since matchday four and Thistle now know they can come to within three points of Billy Dodds’ side if they can beat the Highlanders this weekend. Jags assistant manager Alan Archibald spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the clash:

“At this point of the season things are a bit different because you know what to expect a bit more than you do during the first quarter. With Inverness, we’ve played them and I’ve had the chance to watch a bit of their footage as well so we know what we’re going to get from them.

“They lost during the week but that’s only one of two or three losses all season I think so they should still be confident coming down here but I think we are too. When we played them last time we felt we more than matched them in the first half and actually could have been a couple up before they then deservedly turned the game around in the second half.

“It was disappointing to come away with nothing from that game but we can take the positives from the first half and look to put that sort of performance in for the full 90 minutes this time round.”

The team played their first midweek game of the league season on Tuesday as they fought to a stalemate against Greenock Morton at Cappielow and Archie told us about how the squad have managed their recovery ahead of Saturday.

“The good thing is that we’ve got recent experience of back-to-back games from last season so the players are able to deal with it pretty well. As it was then, we just have to manage workloads and make sure we don’t give anyone too much to do especially after two toughly-contested games that were tight all the way through the 90 minutes.”

Looking back on Tuesday’s game in more detail, Alan said that the team came off the pitch disappointed that they only got one point.

“It was another frustrating game for us. The end product wasn’t quite there and that meant we didn’t get the win that we wanted. Zak had a good chance early on with Tiff on the follow-up and if that goes in then who knows how the game pans out but overall we didn’t do enough to win it and can’t really complain that we only got a draw.

“Everyone was desperate to get the win, especially after a fairly poor game on Saturday, but as I say we didn’t deserve more than a point. We had a couple of spells where we looked dangerous but we weren’t creating enough chances and that’s been the common theme of these last two games.”

Defensively it was another clean sheet for the Jags and Archie had specific praise for Jamie Sneddon in the Thistle goal who made it four shutouts in his last eight league games as he played an important role in midweek.

“Jamie did really well again in a few different ways for us. He was coming out for corners and making catches or punching it away which we needed towards the end of the game when Morton were delivering some good balls into the box and also his distribution was great. When he comes to make a catch he’s staying alert and using the quick options if they’re on which lead to a few decent openings for us.

“He’s been a part of that defensive unit which we haven’t changed much recently and they’re doing really well. I think it’s three clean sheets in four league games which is really positive for us and now we just need to make sure we’re creating at the other end to compliment what we’re doing at the back.”

Alan ended by giving us the latest team news ahead of the game against Caley Thistle.

“There aren’t any changes to talk about at the moment. As you’d expect after a couple of games in quick succession there are a few little knocks here and there but they won’t stop anyone from playing this weekend.”

92’Full Time Report

It's a third 0-0 draw in a row for Thistle.

It will be Inverness that will feel the more aggrieved not to have collected full points after hitting the post and bar in the first half and seeing Jamie Sneddon save a second half Sean Welsh penalty.

92’Full Time

90’+01’

Sneddon is able to watch a curling MacGregor effort go wide although that was a little too close for comfort.

90’

Murray finds space on the left but his cross is poor and Ridgers collects.

88’

So close to a late winner for Inverness. McKay cuts the ball back for MacGregor whose effort goes just over the bar.

85’Inverness CT substitution: Roddy MacGregor replaces Tom Walsh
85’Thistle substitution: Connor Murray replaces Scott Tiffoney

84’

Tiffoney's corner can't find a Thistle head and although Thistle try and keep the pressure up the ball is cleared.

84’Thistle corner from the right

Bannigan clips the free kick towards the back post and Thistle force a corner.

83’

Rudden is fouled giving Thistle a free kick about 30 yards from goal.

82’

Man of the Match: Jamie Sneddon

81’

Hastie has the ball in the net for Thistle but the ball had gone out for a goal kick before Rudden cut the ball back to him.

80’

Into the last 10 minutes and of the two sides it is Inverness that look the more likely to break the deadlock. Thistle have been pretty toothless in the second half.

79’Inverness CT substitution: Lewis Jamieson replaces Aaron Doran

78’

Akinola sticks out a foot to prevent Gardyne's pass from finding McKay.

72’

Inverness look for a second penalty as Doran hits the deck just inside the box but the referee this time doesn't point to the spot.

67’

From the edge of the box Doran lifts a shot over the Thistle crossbar.

66’

Rudden does well to drill a low cross into the Inverness box but nobody reads it and it is cleared.

62’Thistle substitution: Jake Hastie replaces Brian Graham
62’Thistle substitution: Shea Gordon replaces Cammy Smith
61’Inverness CT corner from the right

61’

Sneddon is quickly involved in the action again tipping a long range effort over the crossbar.

60’Saved

Ex Jag Sean Welsh takes the penalty. He goes to Sneddon's right but Sneddon guess correctly and makes a great save and is able to grab hold of the rebound.

59’Penalty Inverness CT

Mayo allows Doran to sneak round the back of him and when Mayo reacts he makes contact with Doran. There's not much contact but enough for a fairly obvious penalty.

58’Thistle Booking - Ross Docherty

56’

It's been poor stuff from both sides since the restart.

51’

A tame Doran shot is straight at Sneddon.

Crowd: 2,527

45’

Thistle are immediately under pressure , pressure that only eases when Duffy shoots  wide.

45’Kick-Off (2nd half)
45’+01’Half Time Report

Another half of football passes without a goal despite chances at both ends.

Inverness have unquestionably been the closest to a goal with both Walsh and Gardyne striking the face of the Thistle goal. Walsh hitting the inside of the post and Gardyne the bar.

Thistle were closest with a Smith effort that Ridgers scrambled round the post.

45’+01’Half-Time

44’

Tiffoney gets past one defender, then two but not a third as he us brought down. The referee deciding though that the first challenge is where the free kick should be taken from.

43’

Rudden's snap shot clears Ridgers' crossbar.

42’

Thistle don't clear their lines following the free kick and it's not until Devine clatters Docherty that the danger is over.

41’

Holt fouls Walsh and Inverness have a free kick wide on the right.

37’

For the second time in the afternoon Inverness strike the frame of the goal. It's Gardyne this time who is the unfortunate player with McKay seeing his effort from the rebound well blocked by Foster.

33’Inverness CT corner from the right

31’

Welsh picks out Walsh with a neat cross field pass. Walsh's first time volley though cleanly struck is straight at Sneddon who saves with ease.

28’

Faced with two defenders in front of him Tiffoney does really well to get a cross over from the right. Graham gets his head to it but his glancing header slides wide of goal.

25’

It's a better corner this time from Bannigan but Ridgers manages to claw it away from danger.

24’Thistle corner from the right

A Docherty shot takes a deflection on the way over the bar.

22’

It's Bannigan with the corner this time but he too hits a poor one.

21’Thistle corner from the right

20’

Gardyne takes the free kick and can do no more than tamely hit the Thistle wall.

19’

Inverness win a free kick just shy of 30 yards from the Thistle goal and just right of centre.

17’Inverness CT Booking - Robbie Deas

Tiffoney is away from Deas who simply pulls him to the ground.

16’

Tiffoney has to step in and clear as a patient Inverness build up threatens to end with the Thistle defence opened up.

13’

It's a poor corner from Smith that Inverness easily deal with.

12’Thistle corner from the right

10’

No shortage of chances inside the first 10 minutes. On this evidence a third successive 0-0 draw is unlikely.

07’

Inverness won't get closer to scoring without actually doing so. Walsh's angled drive beats Sneddon but strikes the inside of the post and stays out.

07’

Smith's corner is cleared

06’Thistle corner from the right

Nearly an opener for Thistle. Rudden finds Smith with a pass and Ridgers just manages to turn it round the post.

05’

Another chance for Inverness following a sliced clearance that falls to Doran but he drags his shot away rather than towards goal.

03’

Good chance for Inverness. It starts with Deas who threads through a pass for Doran who tries to beat Sneddon at his near post but shoots wide.

00’

There is an early chance for Thistle. Bannigan plays a quick pass forward that finds Rudden inside the box. he rather snatches at the opportunity though and the ball goes wide without Ridgers having to make a save.

00’

Thistle kick off are will be shooting towards the John Lambie Stand in the first half.

00’Kick-Off

00’Introduction

The settled look to the Thistle team continues with Ian McCall's selection for this afternoon's visit of Inverness.

AT Morton midweek the Thistle manager made just one change to his starting eleven with Kyle Turner replacing Cammy Smith.

This afternoon that change is reversed with Smith coming back in.

That aside Thistle are unchanged.

Match Report

Partick Thistle v Inverness CT – 30th October 2021

Off the back of consecutive scoreless draws against Dunfermline Athletic and Greenock Morton, Partick Thistle welcomed second placed Inverness to Maryhill for more cinch Championship action.

Ian McCall only made one change to the team that started the midweek stalemate against Morton with Cammy Smith recalled to the side on the right-hand side of the midfield at the expense of Kyle Turner, who dropped back to the bench.

The hosts started the game promisingly with Zak Rudden latching onto a Stuart Bannigan ball in behind the Caley defence less than a minute into the contest. Rudden managed to get a bit of separation from Kirk Broadfoot but couldn’t get his left-footed shot on target, shooting wide of the near post.

The promising start continued for the Firhill side when Cammy Smith nearly doubled his tally for the season in the 7th minute. Once again Rudden was involved as he held the ball up out wide before slipping a ball through to Smith who had made an infield run towards the box. He took the shot on first time trying to catch Mark Ridgers out at his near post but saw his effort saved well by the former Thistle ‘keeper.

Following that good chance, the Jags could have easily found themselves behind moments later. The resulting corner from Smith’s saved shot quickly turned into a counter-attack for Inverness. After the initial set piece was cleared, Michael Gardyne and Aaron Doran played the ball between each other before the latter lifted a pass over to Tom Walsh on the right flank. Walsh got away from the covering Scott Tiffoney before cutting past Tunji Akinola and trying to pick out the far corner. Fortunately for the Jags, Walsh’s shot rebounded off the post and was cleared for a corner.

A selection of half-chances followed with Ross Docherty having a shot from 20 yards deflected over the bar and Brian Graham seeing a glancing header fly well wide of target. Walsh was on the prowl again just after the half-hour mark as he tried a difficult volley from a Sean Welsh cross. The midfielder met the ball well but Jamie Sneddon saw it all the way and gathered comfortably.

The Caley Jags were then denied by the woodwork for a second time on 36 minutes as Michael Gardyne went close. The experienced wideman was played the ball by Scott Allardice before turning away from Tunji Akinola and trying to blast the ball into the net. His high shot looked net-bound but ricocheted back off the crossbar, falling to Billy McKay in the six-yard box. The former Ross County striker tried to head home into the waiting net but saw his attempt blocked by Richard Foster.

The next big flashpoint in the match came just before the hour mark as Inverness were awarded a penalty. A long ball forward was allowed to bounce in the Thistle box and as Aaron Doran snuck in behind Lewis Mayo, the two collided sending Doran to the ground and prompting the referee to point to the spot.

Former Thistle midfielder Sean Welsh stepped up to take the spot kick but Jamie Sneddon produced some heroics to get down to his right and save the penalty before collecting the loose ball. Moments later he was needed again as Aaron Doran tried to lob the ball into the net from 35 yards but he was able to tip the ball over the bar, preserving his clean sheet.

The final big opening of the game fell in the 89th minute as the away side almost grabbed a winner. Billy McKay got on the end of a chipped ball towards the by-line and played a cut-back towards Caley substitute Lewis Jamieson. Jamieson got his foot to the ball first but could only lift the ball high and wide of the goal as one last chance to win the three points went begging for Inverness.

So that’s how it finished as the two sides battled to a 0-0 draw with Jamie Sneddon the hero for Thistle. It meant a third straight 0-0 draw for the Jags as they maintained fifth position in the Championship.

Match Reaction

Partick Thistle v Inverness CT – 30th October 2021

The management team’s written previews and reactions are presented by The Jags Trust. You can keep up to date with the latest from The Jags Trust by visiting their website, www.jagstrust.com.

After making it all the way to October without a 0-0 in 2021, Partick Thistle have now had three goalless draws on the trot. The Jags battled to a scoreless stalemate with Inverness this afternoon following on from identical results against Dunfermline and Morton with Jamie Sneddon the hero of their latest shutout. Inverness came close in the first half, hitting the post and the bar before half-time but it was on the hour mark when they had their best chance to open the scoring. Aaron Doran was brought down by Lewis Mayo in the box and the Caley Jags were awarded a penalty, however, Sneddon denied Sean Welsh from 12 yards to maintain his clean sheet and ultimately earn his side a point. Jags boss Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk following the full-time whistle:

“It’s a good point for us, I think, especially after that second half where they were definitely the better team. The game was pretty even in the first half and both teams had some good chances. Zak found a couple of good positions and Cammy wasn’t far away either but they had their moments as well, hitting the post and the bar.

“It was a bit more one-sided after half time. They were putting a lot of pressure on us and we needed Jamie to earn us the point. At the end of the day, the players gave their all and battled for that point so we’ll take that and move forward.”

The manager took some time to discuss Jamie Sneddon’s performance more as he continues to impress between the sticks for the Maryhill men.

“I’ve been really pleased with the way Jamie’s been playing recently. He made a couple of mistakes earlier in the season but he’s bounced back from that brilliantly and he won that point for us today. The penalty save was absolutely outstanding and that’s now been a good run of games where he’s been doing well so hopefully he can continue that.”

The team had to dig in late in the game as Inverness pushed for a winner and McCall was delighted with the way his side stuck to their task towards the end of the game.

“As I said, we had to fight today. The pitch was quite heavy and a lot of the guys out there have played a lot of minutes over the past week so it wasn’t easy but they gave everything to get us the point.

“We’ve got two young centre-halves who will have learned a lot from that game. They’ve got some very experienced attacking players who aren’t easy to play against but they stood up to the challenge. Lewis did give away the penalty but having watched it back I think it’s quite harsh on him.”

Thistle now look ahead to two trips to Ayrshire as they face Kilmarnock and Ayr away in consecutive weeks and the gaffer says the team have to go into both games looking to win.

“We’ll always look to win games, that’s what our mind-set is and it will be no different in these two games. It’s Rugby Park first which will be a difficult game but we have to go there with belief and hopefully we can get back to scoring goals.”

Further reaction from Thistle manager Ian McCall and Jamie Sneddon will be available for JagZone subscribers to watch tonight – log in to view.

We’ll also have extended highlights and a full game replay of today’s match on JagZone tonight.
