After getting their February off to a winning start against Ayr United last Tuesday, Partick Thistle will be looking to continue the positive start to the month as they travel to take on Inverness at the Caledonian Stadium this midweek. The Caley Jags are experiencing a sticky patch of form at the moment but have had the upper hand on the Maryhill Men so far this season with Ian McCall’s side only managing one point in two games against the Highlanders. Thistle assistant manager Alan Archibald spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the teams’ third meeting this term:
“We’re very much looking forward to this one considering we didn’t get to play on Saturday. After beating Ayr we were keen to carry that into the Queen of the South game but it wasn’t to be. The positive is that at least we have another midweek game and we’ve not had to wait a week and a half between games.
“That positive feeling is still there from the Ayr game and everyone is just desperate to get stuck into the next game. You want to build some momentum so the game against Inverness gives us the chance to do that.”
With no game at the weekend, there was a chance for the other teams in the top five to pull away from the Jags but come Monday morning only one of the teams in the play-off places had won and Archie admits that was a relief.
“We knew ahead of the weekend that Arbroath and Killie were going to be playing each other and someone was dropping points there but then on Saturday Raith drew and Inverness lost so overall it was a decent set of results for us albeit we’d have loved to have had the chance to win ourselves and move up a couple of places. “
Now, preparing to take on Inverness at the Caledonian Stadium, Alan says he expects quite a different Caley team to the one we faced previously.
“I think just looking at the starting line-up they put out at the weekend, there are quite a few changes in there. They’ve signed some players, let some go and picked up some injuries so they’ll be a slightly different prospect in terms of personnel.
“We were our own worst enemy when we were last up there but I was very impressed with them when they came to Firhill. They created really well and were unlucky not to win in all honesty but we know we can play a lot better than we did that day so that’s what we hope to do this time round.”
A win against Billy Dodds’ side would see the Jags moving two places up into third and Archibald says that’s a massive incentive for the team.
“You don’t want to get too hung up on looking at the table with so much football left to play but it is something tangible that we can aim for. Especially when you consider we’d be above Inverness and Raith with games in hand on them, it would be great if we can go and do that.
“It’s never that simple though. For Inverness, they’ll see it as a chance to end a poor run of form with a statement result so we need to make sure we’re on our game when we head up there.”
Finally, Archie gave us the latest team news ahead of the trip North.
“I don’t think there are any updates on what Neil Scally spoke about towards the end of last week. Richard Foster will be out after the knock he picked up against Ayr but apart from him and Darren Brownlie, everyone should be fit to play a part.
“Kyle McAllister missed a couple of sessions last week with a slight knock but he came in towards the end of the week and has looked sharp so it’ll be good to have him available for the first time.”

After back-to-back 1-0 victories at Firhill, Partick Thistle were back on the road tonight as they travelled to take on Inverness at the Caledonian Stadium.
The Jags had struggled in their previous two meetings with Caley having lost 3-1 and drawn 0-0 with Billy Dodds’ side in prior meetings, however, with the Highlanders in poor form to start 2022, this game represented a good chance for the Maryhill men to leapfrog their opponents.
There was one change made by Ian McCall to the side which beat Ayr United eight days ago with Kevin Holt returning to the squad after injury to replace Richard Foster who picked up a knock last time out.
On a bitterly cold night in the North of Scotland, Thistle were able to heat up quickly and were ahead after eight minutes. Scott Tiffoney picked up the ball on the left flank and sped past David Carson with ease. He then drilled a low ball towards the goalmouth which ricocheted off of Brian Graham into the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the away side, the lead wasn’t long-lasting and it was a familiar foe who drew Caley level. It came via a cross from the right wing which dropped right on the foot of Billy McKay and the veteran frontman volleyed home for his sixth career goal against Partick Thistle.
The first half action roared on and Thistle came up with a counter-punch even more quickly than the hosts had. Just seven minutes after the leveller Scott Tiffoney was giving David Carson nightmares again as the winger drove past Caley’s number eight and lifted a cross to the back post. On hand to apply the finishing touch was Brian Graham who convincingly headed back across goal to make it 2-1.
Further half-chances followed for the visitors with Kevin Holt firing over the bar from the edge of the box twice and Scott Tiffoney forcing a good save out of Mark Ridgers as he looked to find the top corner, however, the away side let their guard down on the stroke of half-time and were punished. A corner swung in to the back post was won in the air by Shane Sutherland and, from five yards out, he forced the ball past Jamie Sneddon to restore parity once again.
Coming out for the second half, both teams had some possession without creating much until the 72nd minute when Thistle were awarded a penalty for the first time this season. Robbie Crawford was the man taken down as Robbie Deas caught the number 22 and it was Brian Graham who stepped up to take the spot kick. The number nine ran onto it confidently and smashed the ball past the goalkeeper who had dived the wrong way.
There was almost another lightning-quick response from the Highlanders as the ball fell to Sam Pearson in the box. The Bristol City loanee leathered a shot at goal which clipped the top of the crossbar and flew away from goal.
Caley Thistle went close again on 82 minutes as substitute Logan Chalmers stepped up to take a free-kick from 20 yards. The midfielder struck low and hard on the goalkeeper’s side with a shot which looked net-bound but Jamie Sneddon was down sharply to turn it away.
Just as it looked like Thistle had weathered the Caley storm and were going to take all three points back down the A9, the home side pounced. The second phase of an injury time corner saw the ball delivered into the centre of the box where Kirk Broadfoot was waiting. The centre-half, who scored against the Maryhill men earlier this season, headed goalwards and saw his effort find the back of the net with the help of a deflection.
And so it was late disappointment for Ian McCall’s side who missed the chance to move up two places in the league due to that late Broadfoot header. Now they turn their attentions to Saturday afternoon as they face Dundee United in the Scottish Cup fifth round. That one is a 3pm kick-off at Firhill.

Partick Thistle suffered late heartbreak in the Highlands this evening as they conceded in second half injury time in a 3-3 draw with Inverness Caley Thistle. The Maryhill men led the game three times but were pegged back on each occasion as Billy Dodds’ side fought back to claim a point. An early own goal and two Brian Graham strikes put the away side in control at various points of the game but the hosts answered through Billy McKay, Shane Sutherland and Kirk Broadfoot whose deflected header in the 93rd minute denied the travelling Jags the three points. Thistle boss Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk following the game:
“Everyone is devastated in that dressing room right now because we were so close. We felt we edged it and obviously it feels ten times worse when you concede so late on. It’s difficult to be too hard on them though because they put so much into that game and have been excellent for me over the past few months.”
Thistle conceded in added time at the end of each half and the manager felt that was unlike his team.
“The timing of those goals was a real sucker punch and it’s not something we’ve done much this season. Certainly over the last 15 or so games we’ve been pretty tight in key moments but tonight those two goals at the end of the halves cost us.
“Both come from set pieces which was frustrating as well. The one in the first half, we allow a header on goal from about five yards out and there’s only going to be one result with that. Then for the third one is a second phase delivery and our marking is loose. The header takes a big deflection which takes it in but we still have to do more to challenge that.”
McCall says there’s no time to dwell on the draw though with a big cup tie against Dundee United coming up this weekend.
“We need to regroup. It’s a difficult one to take but we know there’s not going to be much time between games this month. The cup tie is one to look forward to and we’ll go into it with the belief that we can get into the next round.”
Finally, the boss complimented the contingent of brave Thistle fans who made the trip up to Inverness and made their voices heard.
“They were fabulous tonight. It was a tough night to travel in and a cold one to watch football in but they were still singing and shouting right until the end. We’re just annoyed we couldn’t reward them with the win.”

A ball is swung into the Inverness box and Hendrie goes to ground looking for a penalty.
The corner is initially cleared but returned into the box and this time the ball is headed home.
It's a Thistle throw down by the Inverness corner flag.
Into injury time we go.
A McAlear shot drifts well wide of the Thistle goal.
Sneddon makes a great save low down at his right hand post to keep out Chalmers' free kick.
Docherty's shot from distance is straight at Ridgers who saves.
Into the final 10 minutes as the snow starts to fall again.
It's all happening at the moment and Inverness should be level but McKay shoots wide from the edge of the box when most people expected him to find the bottom corner of the net.
From the right edge of the box Tiffoney shot beats Ridgers but goes narrowly wide of the far post.
Inverness are close again as Parson thunders a shot off the crossbar.
Thistle are nearly pegged back for a third time and it takes an excellent Sneddon sav low down to keep Thistle in front at 3-2.
Graham absolutely slams home the penalty.
Before the penalty can be taken Tiffoney is shown a yellow card presumably for something he said.
Crawford twists past a challenge at the corner of the and before he can advance any further he has the feet taken from under him.
Another short corner, this time to Docherty. His cross is cleared at the expense of a Thistle throw.
Bannigan works a short corner to Tiffoney who sees his shot blocked by a defender.
Bannigan's corner is cleared as far as Smith at the edge of the box and he isn't too far off target with his powerful shot.
Sutherland just fails to gather a McAlear pass as Thistle come under some sustained pressure.
Broadfoot makes a near post run to try and reach McAlear's corner. He does get on the end of it but with Docherty in close attention can't direct his header towards goal.
Ridgers doesn't gather Smith's corner at the first time of asking but does at the second.
Thistle looks dangerous on a counter attack. McKenna is able to get a cross over from the right. It finds Graham who has to turn away from goal to find room for a shot and drags his effort wide of target.
It's been a first half performance of contrasts.
At one end of the park Thistle have been a constant threat and the two goals they've scored are a just reward for their performance.
At the other end of the park Thistle have been guilty not once of twice of conceding soft goals.
As a result the scores are level at the break in a match that Thistle should be comfortably in control of.
It's another soft goa for Thistle to concede. McAlear's back post corner finds Sutherland who is able to nod the ball home.
A Holt shot from the edge of the box dips just a shade too late as Thistle come close again.
McAlear's corner goes towards the back post where referee Stuart spots a push and awards Thistle a free kick.
The definition of ambitious is Brian Graham thinking he could score from 40 yards out with a first time shot. It goes almost as far wide as Graham was from goal.
It's nearly a third for Thistle and is takes an excellent save from Ridgers to prevent Tiffoney, who Inverness simply can't cope with at present, from finding the top right hand corner of the net from 20 yards out.
Thistle are back in front and this time there is no doubt at all the scorer. It's Brian Graham. Tiffoney does the spade work with a drop of the shoulders that takes him past a defender and he clips over a cross that Graham heads home.
It's far too easy for Inverness. Carson has time and space to deliver a cross and McKay has even more space directly in front of the Thistle goal and a striker of his quality isn't going to miss that type of chance.
Thistle are moving the ball about midfield with confidence and a patient move creates another opportunity. Tiffoney finds Holt with a pass at the left hand corner of the box but his effort goes over the bar.
It's a dream start for Thistle who hit the front inside 10 minutes. Tiffoney powers past a couple of defenders inside the box and from a tight angle squeezes the ball home, possibly with the aid of a deflection off someone. Maybe Brian Graham, maybe a defender Nobody is too sure up in the press box.
Crawford threads a pass to Smith near the edge of the Inverness box. His shot takes a deflection allowing Ridgers to make an easy save.
Bannigan's left footed corner goes to the edge of the 6 yard box. It's cleared as far as Tiffoney lurking at the edge of the box whose sends a shot high over the crossbar.
Inverness kick the game off on a chilly night in Inverness. Thistle are defending the goal with the noisy travelling support behind them.
