Match Preview

Partick Thistle v Kilmarnock – 18th September 2021

The management team’s written previews and reactions are presented by The Jags Trust. You can keep up to date with the latest from The Jags Trust by visiting their website, www.jagstrust.com.

Partick Thistle return to Firhill this weekend as they take on Kilmarnock in cinch Championship action. The Jags dropped to fourth place last week following defeat to Inverness while Killie climbed up to second after a win over Greenock Morton, however, the Maryhill men know they can go back level on points with Tommy Wright’s side with a victory tomorrow afternoon. Thistle boss Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the clash:

“We’re expecting a really difficult game against Kilmarnock. Naturally they’re one of the favourites to win the league having come down from the top flight and you can see plenty of quality in their squad.

“Every game is difficult in this league though; we know that. There’s not much between any two given teams and it makes for an interesting division. What it also means is we go into each game believing we can get the win and that’s the aim for us this weekend.”

Having had time to reflect on last Saturday’s loss to Inverness, McCall says his team now have to put it behind them and focus their attentions on Kilmarnock.

“It was a disappointing result of course and the fact that we caused problems for ourselves made it even more difficult to take.

“We had a big chance to go two up in the first half and we made a couple of costly mistakes in the second half but, to be honest, we don’t want to dwell on it too much. The focus is now on getting back on track this week.”

Taking a second to look at the bigger picture of the league campaign so far, the gaffer spoke of how the first five fixtures have given him optimism about the possibilities for this season.

“Looking back on the games we’ve had so far, we feel like we could have won the two games that we lost. Just now we’re sitting on three wins out of five and that’s a good start for us but, as I say, it could have been even better. We know we don’t have a divine right to beat anyone in this league though so each result is hard-earned.

“We’ve got a group of players who are determined to do well and we’ve set off on the right foot. We want to be up near the top this season and that’s where we are at the moment so hopefully we can continue that going forward.”

The injury list at Firhill is a lot shorter than it was at this time last season and the manager is glad to have a few difficult decisions to make before each game.

“Our squad is slightly on the smaller side but we feel that everyone in the squad is good enough to be a starting player for Partick Thistle so that does create a few headaches when most of the squad is fit.

“Ciaran McKenna came back into the squad last week which was great and Stephen Hendrie should be involved in the squad this weekend so it’s only going to get more difficult for me but ultimately that’s not a bad problem to have.”

Exclusive video interviews with Lewis Mayo and Thistle assistant manager Neil Scally will be available for JagZone subscribers to watch today – log in to view.

93’Full Time Report

Thistle are undone by one freak goal, a minute after Jamie Sneddon had saved a Shaw penalty, when a clearance hit off the unfortunate Kevin Holt and flew into the net, and one quality finish from Shaw.

Thistle put a lot into this game but after falling behind rarely looked like finding a way back into the match.

93’Full Time
90’+02’Thistle Booking - Richard Foster

90’

Neither Gordon nor MacIver can direct a McKenna cross goalwards. Thistle have never given up but they have lacked today the quality needed in the final third.

87’Kilmarnock substitution: Innes Cameron replaces Fraser Murray
87’Kilmarnock substitution: Calum Waters replaces Oli Shaw

86’

Smith his able to get his head to a lofted McKenna cross from the right but he can't get any power in his header and it is an easy save from Hemming.

83’

Bannigan loses the ball deep inside his own half putting Thistle under pressure but Mayo is on hand to clear McKenzie's cross.

81’

Smith does well to switch the ball to the left but there is just a shade too much pace on his pass to allow Foster to collect and Hemming gathers before going down injured.

80’

Tiffoney's corner goes deep to the back post. Mayo manages to head the ball back towards goal but Hemming is there to collect.

79’Thistle corner from the left

78’

A Foster cross is cleared only as far as Docherty. The Thistle captain has time and space but can do no more than send a tame effort over the crossbar.

76’Thistle substitution: Ross MacIver replaces Brian Graham
75’Kilmarnock substitution: Brad Lyons replaces Scott Robinson

75’

Foster crosses from the left and Graham twists his head to reach but his header goes just over the bar. Thistle need a goal and soon.

71’

Tiffoney's corner is delivered to a good area but nobody is able to get on the end of it.

70’Thistle corner from the right

Tiffonery can have no complaints as he goes to ground inside the box looking for a penalty.

66’Thistle corner from the left
64’Goal Kilmarnock! Oli Shaw
Thistle 0 - Kilmarnock 2

If the first Killie goal was a freak then there is no denying the quality of the second as Shaw shoots powerfully and high past Sneddon from the edge of the box.

62’Thistle substitution: replaces Zak Rudden

Shea Gordon replaces Zak Rudden.

62’Thistle substitution: Cammy Smith replaces Kyle Turner

It looks as if Thistle are set to make a double change.

59’

Tiffoney pushes a pass to Turner to his right and Turner's powerful drive thumps off a defender and goes clear.

57’

Hemming makes a good catch from McKenna's cross.

55’

Thistle are close to an equaliser as Graham lifts a cross to the back post where Rudden heads wide.

51’Goal Kilmarnock! Kevin Holt (own goal)
Thistle 0 - Kilmarnock 1

It's a freak goal as a clearance thumps off Kevin Holt and flies past Sneddon and into the corner of the net. So harsh on Sneddon after his penalty save just a minute earlier.

50’Saved Thistle

Sneddon goes to his left and saves Shaw's penalty. The ball runs loose at for a second it looks as if the rebound will produce a goal but the ball is sent high over the bar.

49’Penalty Kilmarnock

McKenzie works the ball to the feet of Robinson who is adjudged to be fouled just at the edge of the box.

48’

Foster misjudges a high ball but Kilmarnock can't take advantage with Alston shooting wide from a tight angle.

47’

Hemming gets a strong fist to Turner's free kick to get the ball clear.

46’

Thistle win a free kick wide on the left after a foul on Tiffoney.

45’

We're back underway.

45’Kick-Off (2nd half)
45’Half Time Report

It's been a good, exciting game of football but it remains goalless at half-time.

To my biased eyes Thistle have had the better of things with Hemming making a good stop near his front post to deny Tiffoney.

Kilmarnock though had the game's best chance so far with Sneddon making an excellent save to deny Shaw.

Indeed the visitors definitely finished the half on top and at that point Thistle would probably not have been unhappy to hear the half-time whistle.

All to play for though in the second 45 minutes.

45’Half-Time

43’

It's Kilmarnock that are finishing the half the stronger and it takes a well judged challenge from Mayo to nudge the ball to safety after Docherty concedes possession cheaply in midfield.

42’

And from the corner that follows Kilmarnock are a whisker away from taking the lead. Thistle don't deal with the corner effectively and from close range a header just clears the bar and lands on top of the Thistle net.

42’Kilmarnock corner from the right

Holt almost slices a clearance into his own net.

38’

Graham has the ball outside the Kilmarnock box. There are no options either in front or to either side of him so he shoots for goal himself and his effort is too far wide.

37’

The corner has Thistle under a bit of pressure before McKenna is able to clear an awkward bouncing ball.

37’Kilmarnock corner from the right

Holt gets across quickly to make an important clearance.

29’

The corner is well defended. Killie do pick the ball up again but when a cross comes over Sneddon is there to claim the ball.

29’Kilmarnock corner from the right

27’

Sneddon makes a great save with his legs to deny Shaw as the Thistle defence is opened up for the first time.

27’

Bannigan touches the free kick to Tiffoney to his right and his shot is quickly blocked.

26’

Turner is tripped as he cut across the pitch near the edge of the Killie box.

24’

Hemming gets his fingertips to a fierce Tiffoney cross. Thistle pressing hard at the moment.

23’Thistle corner from the left

Hemming makes a good stop low at his right hand post to keep out Tiffoney's shot and then makes a good, confident catch from the Turner corner that follows.

21’

Turner is a little late with a challenge near the edge of the Killie box. There is an angry reaction from a Kilmarnock player but no yellow card for Turner.

18’

Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright is clearly unhappy about something and play is stopped as he is booked.

17’

Turner's free kick though is a poor one and is comfortably cleared.

16’

Killie can't clear the second of Turner's two corners. Tiffoney picks up the ball on the right and he is fouled as he tries to force his way into the box.

15’Thistle corner from the left
15’Thistle corner from the left

14’

After a fairly frantic opening the game is starting to settle down.

09’

Thistle easily deal with a poor corner kick.

09’Kilmarnock corner from the right

It's a great challenge from Mayo on Robinson  as Thistle looked for an offside flag as Killie break.

07’

Hemming is in action again as he whips the ball off the feet of an advancing Rudden.

07’

Turner's corner goes deep. Mayo keeps things alive by heading the ball on but Hemming takes charge and collects the ball.

06’Thistle corner from the left

04’

First threat from Kilmarnock as Murray finds space as Killie break. He gets into the Thistle box where his curling shot is headed clear. All the early signs are that this is going to be a good, open game of football.

03’

Thistle have been on the front foot in the early stages and a Turner ball into the box is just a shade too far ahead of Rudden.

00’Thistle corner from the right

And attack they do forcing an early corner when Docherty's drive is touched wide of goal.

00’

Kilmarnock kick the game off and Thistle will attack the John Lambie end in the first half.

00’Introduction

Thistle welcome Kilmarnock to Firhill with the old stadium celebrating its 112th birthday today.

The team that Ian McCall has selected that will hopefully mark the occasion with a win shows two changes from the side that started at Inverness last weekend.

In come Ciaran McKenna, fully recovered from what had looked a nasty injury at Arbroath last month, and Zak Rudden.

Olatunji Akinola and Cammy Smith are the two players that make way for McKenna and Rudden's return.

Match Report

Partick Thistle v Kilmarnock – 18th September 2021

Partick Thistle suffered a second consecutive cinch Championship defeat as Kilmarnock visited Firhill for league action for the first time since 2018.

Ian McCall made two changes to the side which lost to Inverness seven days prior with Ciaran McKenna replacing Tunji Akinola at right-back while Zak Rudden came in for Cammy Smith up front. New signing Stephen Hendrie made his first appearance in a matchday squad as he took a spot on the bench.

The Jags started the better of the two teams with plenty of early possession and their vest chance of that spell came after 24 minutes. Ross Docherty lifted a ball out to Scott TIffoney on the left flank and the number seven cut past two players onto his right foot looking to beat the goalkeeper at the near post as he did at the Caledonian Stadium last time out. This time, Zach Hemming was able to get down to make the save and punch the ball away for a corner before Brian Graham could get to the rebound.

Four minutes later it was the away side going close as Jamie Sneddon was called into action for the first time. Scott Robinson did well to bring a high ball down 20 yards from goal, laying a pass into Oli Shaw’s path. The x-Ross County man then dribbled past Lewis Mayo and Kevin Holt before trying to finish past Sneddon but the Thistle ‘stopper was able to make a block with his feet and the danger was cleared.

Half-chances for Brian Graham and Fraser Murray came and went without troubling either goal and the teams went into the break with the game goalless.

Coming out for the second half, Killie started brightly and were rewarded for that start when they won a penalty in the 50th minute. Rory McKenzie picked up a second ball in the Thistle half and charged forward, feeding the ball into Scott Robinson’s feet at the edge of the box. Lewis Mayo tried to win the ball from the Killie forward but could only bring him down with Willie Collum immediately pointing to the spot.

Oli Shaw stepped up to take the spot kick with the chance to give Killie the crucial opener. He tried to find the bottom left corner but saw his effort save by Sneddon before then turning the rebound over the bar.

The euphoria of the penalty save was short-lived though as Tommy Wright’s side went in front just a couple of minutes later. Fraser Murray got the ball on the left and wasted no time in delivering a cross into the Thistle box. Scott Robinson was lurking but Richard Foster did well to get across his man to turn the ball away. Unfortunately for the number two, his clearance rebounded off the face of teammate Kevin Holt and into the back of the net.

The lead was doubled in the 65th minute as Oli Shaw made amends for his earlier miss. The goal came directly from a Zach Hemming goalkick as his ball up the park bounce over the home defence and into Shaw’s path. Killie’s number nine chested it into his own path before striking a half-volley into the top corner, leaving Jamie Sneddon with absolutely no chance this time.

The Maryhill men pushed for a goal to bring them back into the game but the visitors, who boast the joint-best defensive record in the Championship, were able to limit them to just a couple of brief sights of goal that didn’t cause Zach Hemming any serious issues.

The defeat leaves Ian McCall’s side in fourth place after six games with a trip to face Raith Rovers in Kirkcaldy up next. That game is a 3pm kick-off on Sunday, 26th September.

Match Reaction

Partick Thistle v Kilmarnock – 18th September 2021

The management team’s written previews and reactions are presented by The Jags Trust. You can keep up to date with the latest from The Jags Trust by visiting their website, www.jagstrust.com

The cinch Championship season continued this afternoon for Partick Thistle as they fell to defeat against Kilmarnock at Firhill. The Jags knew victory would bring them level on points with Tommy Wright’s side, however, it was the visitors who took the win with two second half goals. After a relatively low-key first half, Killie were presented with a great chance to go ahead when they were awarded a penalty early in the second half. Jamie Sneddon was able to save the penalty but Thistle’s euphoria was short-lived as a Kevin Holt own goal put the away side in front a couple of minutes later. Oli Shaw added a second not long after with Killie going on to see out the game to maintain their 100% away record in the league this season. Jags boss Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk after the match:

“It was a game that started well for us but we didn’t actually create anything clear cut which was the major difference between the two teams today. Generally, there was very little between us but they were able to carve out three or four decent chances and they deserved to win because of that.

“They went with the long ball and that caused us problems right throughout the game and that’s how they get their second goal. These last two weeks we’ve played teams who I think will be among the best in the league this year and, to be honest, I don’t think we’re that far off.”

The manager reflected a bit more on the very evenly-contested first half, ruing his side’s inability to capitalise on early dominance.

“We came out and dominated the first 25 minutes or so but, as I said, we just couldn’t turn that into opportunities. They had a spell towards the end of the half where they came back into it but overall I felt we had the better of the first half. The thing is, though, they still had the best chance when their boy breaks through and Jamie has to make a good save.”

Killie’s opening goal came only a couple of minutes after Jamie Sneddon made another great save to deny Oli Shaw from the penalty spot and the gaffer was disappointed his team didn’t use that save as inspiration to push on.

“That was a moment that I felt we really should have used as a catalyst for the rest of the game but instead we go and lose a bit of a soft goal and that kind of knocks the stuffing out of us. It’s an unfortunate goal with the way it bounces in off Holt from Foster’s clearance but it was just a shame we couldn’t get some sort of boost from the penalty save.

“They then go and get their second with a big ball down the middle of the park and that felt a bit soft too although it was some finish to be fair. From that point on they were very professional and made it very difficult for us to make any headway. They’re a team with plenty of experience and they used it to see the game out.”

The manager then took a moment to give Jamie Sneddon some particular praise with the number one having made great saves either side of half-time including that penalty stop.

“Last week was a very tough day for Jamie but he was very good for us this afternoon. The save in the first half was great and then he’s done well to save the penalty as well so I felt for him a bit but it was good to see him bounce back.”

Thistle now begin preparations for a Sunday afternoon clash with Raith Rovers next weekend and McCall says that the game now bears more significance following today’s loss.

“It becomes even more important now because we’ve got three games left until we’ve played everyone once. Our aim is to be up in that top four and although we’ve started well we need to keep picking up points to stay near the top otherwise teams will quickly start catching us.”

Further reaction from Thistle manager Ian McCall will be available for JagZone subscribers to watch tonight – log in to view.

We’ll also have extended highlights and a full game replay of today’s match on JagZone tonight.
