Cerny delighted to secure top six

It’s been quite the week for Tomas Cerny, after saving a penalty against Celtic during the week, the Jags goalkeeper pulled off a stunning save in the second half of the 1-0 victory over Motherwell which helped seal a top six finish.

The number one had a massive grin on his face when he spoke to ptfc.co.uk after the match and admits he was delighted. He said: “It’s an amazing achievement. I’m incredibly happy that we’ve managed to get over the line, and to do it in style too with a win, a clean sheet and at home. I couldn’t be happier.

“It was a great attacking performance in the first half and we dug deep in the second with some brilliant defending to keep the clean sheet.”

The Czech keeper knows it’s something special the team have achieved and he was soaking up the fans adulation at the end

“It’s an amazing feeling coming off the pitch after confirming our place in the top six. To see the fans so happy is a great feeling. We’ve achieved something the club hasn’t done for a long time and it’s something we can all cherish.”

Tomas was quick to heap praise on manager Alan Archibald and the rest of the management team

“We were sitting bottom of the league at Christmas which makes it even better. The management team deserves a lot of credit for picking us up through that and keeping us positive, they believed in us and believed we could do it and we have shown that we can and we deserve it.

“We’ve not lost a league game in the last eight which for Partick Thistle is a brilliant achievement and something we want to keep going now. We are playing well and can now look forward.

“We’ve possibly drawn too many games this season, lost a lot of late goals and we have to look at improving on that next season. ”

Cerny admits it’s been a tough couple of few weeks for him after his mistake allowed Kilmarnock a share of the points at Rugby Park but is glad he was able to play his part this week. The goalkeeper pulled off a superb save for a Zak Jules header midway through the second half.

“I’m very happy to make my contribution, it’s something difficult, 69 minutes without much to do then you have to make a save. I’m delighted I managed to make it and happy we managed to keep a clean sheet.

“It’s been a great week for me with the save and the penalty save against Celtic during the week. Coming into the week it was very difficult for me after the Kilmarnock game. I felt I had let everyone at the club down and there was the two week break after it. It got to me a lot and it was a difficult time for me but to have a week like this and to play my part has been great.

“Coming into the week all I wanted to do was make top six, I didn’t care how we done it but I thought if we managed to do that I could forget about Kilmarnock, thankfully we have managed to do it and I’ve been able to play my part which is great.”

While the top six goal has been achieved Tomas doesn’t think it’s time to switch off. The keeper is now looking to see what else can be achieved.

“I don’t think we can go into the rest of the season and relax too much, we have achieved top six is great but we want to finish as high up the table as we can. I think if you just go out and enjoy yourself it might not be a good thing; it would be great to do that but football doesn’t work like that. I think if you go out and do that you are just going to get beaten every week and we don’t want that. We want to continue the hard work. We’ve got six hard games coming up and we should embrace the challenge.

“We are now in the position that we have nothing to lose, we can go out and play our game without looking over our shoulder. We have Hearts in our sight and we have six games now to see what happens.”
