Partick Thistle’s Jamie Sneddon made history as the Maryhill men beat Dunfermline 1-0 in the Scottish Cup last Friday night becoming the first Jags goalkeeper ever to keep seven consecutive clean sheets and, with cinch Championship action on the cards this weekend, the Thistle number one will be going for clean sheet number eight against Queen of the South. Sneddon spoke to ptfc.co.uk this week to reflect on the team’s defensive achievements and look forward to the trip to Palmerston Park:
“It feels amazing to have the clean sheet record. It’s a real honour when you think about some of the goalkeepers that have been at this club over the years as well because there’s some massive names and some brilliant keepers that have went on to do well so to have that record is something that I’m really proud of and hopefully I can keep it going. The way we’re playing just now we’re confident going into every game so hopefully we can keep more clean sheets over the rest of the season.”
Although delighted with the personal record he’s set, Jamie heaped praise onto the rest of the team who have kept his workload relatively light over the past few games.
“The guys in the backline have been massive lately. There’s only so much you can do as a goalkeeper because if you’re leaking chances then you’re going to concede no matter how well you play. The fact that I’ve had so few saves to make in the last games is a testament to the defence and even with the changes lately, whoever comes in we know they’re more than capable of stepping up.”
To clear the previous shutout benchmark, Jamie needed a clean sheet against Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup and, although the team got there in the end, Sneddon admitted there were some tricky moments.
“The Dunfermline game was another tough win to grind out. Obviously, the weather wasn’t ideal and in the first half the wind was blowing right towards us. Dunfermline started the game strongly, but we did well to keep them out during that period and after that I don’t think there was too much in the game. Thankfully Doc’s wonder goal won it for us and put us through into the next round.
“After the first couple of minutes when they hit the woodwork, I thought I was going to be a lot busier for the rest of the game. The wind really didn’t help us in the first half and those two early corners that nearly got them ahead were tough to deal with but maybe it’s a bit of luck that got us through that spell, but we’ll take it.”
As league football returns this weekend Thistle are off to Dumfries and after two tough 1–0 wins Jamie isn’t expecting things to be any easier for Thistle when they head to Palmerston to face Queen of the South.
“Queens is always going to be a tough game especially when you go down there. We went to Palmerston in the Challenge Cup not too long ago and lost 2–0 so we know how difficult it can be, but I think the main focus has to be on ourselves at the moment and carrying the confidence from previous results into this game because it seems to be working. We need to make sure we’re ready for it because they will want to get a result against us.”
