Match Preview

Rangers WFC v Partick Thistle WFC – 1st March 2023

This Wednesday 1st March, PTWFC take on Rangers at Broadwood Stadium for a 20:00 kick off.

Thistle come off the back of a fantastic 6-0 victory over Glasgow Women in the SWPL1. The girls put on a great display and and the goals last week and we’ll be looking to use this to spur us on against one of the best teams in the country.

A result here for Brian Graham’s side would be huge as we face another difficult challenge out in Cumbernauld.

🗣️Highlights and reaction post match

🆚 Our Opponents: Rangers

Rangers have had a good season thus far, picking up 46 points so far in the SWPL1 from a possible 57.

Sitting in 3rd position, 3 places and 21 points above the jags, they’ll be looking to bounce back having suffered defeat last time out in their match against fellow title contenders Celtic.

There are a few club links between the squads this season, with Megan Cunningham joining the red and yellow side of Glasgow on loan from Rangers at the start of the season ruling her out of this tie. Alongside this, the likes of Jordan McLintock and Claire Adams have also lined up for The Gers in the past.

The previous match between the clubs ended in a 6-0 loss for the Jags in what was a clinical performance from Rangers.

📈Thistle so far

The high scoring victory against Glasgow Women was a sign of intent from our girls. They went out there and put on a display that was worthy of a top six position and are fully intending on securing that before the split happens. Only 3 massive games are remaining until that happens, and it all goes back to Brian Graham’s word to them ever since pre-season: Belief.

Great performances from start to finish in the match, with the girls unlucky to not pick out the back of the net more than the six times they did. Rachel Donaldson continued to drop jaws as she put away yet another goal of the season contender as part of her hat trick on the day to solidify herself as top scorer. Imogen Longcake scored her first goal since moving to Glasgow’s Red and Yellow, Thistle’s 500th goal of all time. A truly memorable occasion last Wednesday night was and we can only hope to keep that momentum going.

Strong followings from the Red and Yellow Army so far this season have really helped our girls, and there’s not a time more important for the Thistle faithful to come along and support their Jags. We want that top 6 and the support from our fans will help us hopefully secure that in the coming weeks.

🗞 Team News

Following the weekend break, it appears to be a fresh squad heading into this game. Megan Cunningham was recalled by the hosts for a week on an emergancy basis and as a twist of fate could line up in the match day squad against the Jags for this one. The management team could freshen things up with Aberdeen just around the corner so a touch of rotation may be on their mind as we look to prove ourselves in this Glasgow derby.

Match Report

Rangers WFC v Partick Thistle WFC – 1st March 2023

With the season split just three games away and Thistle pressing hard for a top six place, The Jags made the short trip to Cumbernauld to face title chasing Rangers. The final score may not have been an entirely unexpected one but it disguised a Thistle performance, in the face of early injury adversary, full of bravery, phenomenal work rate and no lack of talent. For the first 45 minutes of this match Thistle’s full-time professional opponents had a decidedly uncomfortable evening.

The first of two injury blows came Thistle’s way with the game still very much in its infancy. With Thistle trying to make an early attacking impression defensive rock Cheryl McCulloch went to ground inside the Rangers half in obvious pain. After a lengthy delay Cheryl left the pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by Jordan McLintock with Linzi Taylor moving to the defensive position vacated by McCulloch.

Once play restarted there were loud appeals for a Thistle penalty when Rachel Donaldson’s header from an Amy Bulloch corner looked to strike a Rangers hand. Even when play continued the ball nearly spun into the path of Abbie Ferguson in front of the Rangers goal.

Having come close themselves, Thistle nearly fell behind as Rangers broke clear. Watson was left with just Lauren Grant to beat but the keeper, recalled from her loan spell with Queen’s Park, made a fine stop to keep the score at 0-0.

Rangers did, however, take an 18th minute lead and Watson was the scorer. She worked a one-two with Danielsson before knocking the ball beyond Grant to score a goal that highlighted the quality of this Rangers team.

Thistle were anything but overawed by that talent and they continued to take the game to their more illustrious opponents but there was another injury blow for Thistle when Rebecca McGowan was replaced by Claire Adams who was making her own return from injury.

There was just one goal separating the teams at half-time but the game was taken beyond the reaches of Thistle with a goal blast from Rangers at the start of the second half.

The crucial second goal arrived just five minutes after the restart. The ball was touched to McLeary in front of goal and her low shot found the corner of the Thistle net.

Rangers added a third goal just 6 minutes later. This time McLeary provided the assist and Danielsson the finish.

Danielsson smashed home her second goal of the night after 62 minutes despite Clare Docherty’s best attempts to clear off the line and a fifth goal arrived just 3 minutes later when McCoy headed home a McLaughlin cross.

At no point did Thistle give up and they deserved some reward before the finish but the closest, aside from a near own goal, to a strike of their own was a free kick from Leah Robinson that cleared the Rangers crossbar.

This result, coupled with Spartans’ win over bottom side Glasgow Women, saw Thistle drop out of the top six but with the way the fixtures pan out two Thistle wins from their final two pre-split fixtures should be enough to secure a top six place. The first of those two fixtures comes against Aberdeen at Petershill Park this coming Sunday. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
