Thistle's Premier Sports Cup run continues through to the last 8. 

Don't be fouled by the narrowness of the score or the lateness of the Thistle winner, this was a dominant Jags performance lacking just the goals to match some impressive passages of play. 

There was just one anxious moment for Thistle after taking the lead with Milne making a great goal line clearance after the ball had seconds earlier struck the post. 

The referee spots a foul as Stewart's long throw comes into the Thistle box. That should be that you would think. 

A shot thumps off a defender and out for an Arbroath throw. 

Free kick deep inside the Thistle half. 

Minimum of 4 minutes additional time. 

The free kick favours a left footer and Holt takes it. He doesn't make clean contact but Gaston nearly fumbles right in front of Graham. 

Tricky play from Fitzpatrick earns Thistle a free kick about 25 yards out. 

They do get the ball into the box but when a header does comes through a crowded box it is an easy save for Mitchell. 

A silly foul from Fitzpatrick will give Arbroath a chance to get the ball into the box. 

After defending for so long Arbroath suddenly come to life. The ball comes off the base of Mitchell's right hand post before Milne makes a great goal line clearance at the opposite post. 

Thistle are less than convincing in defending the corner. 

It's long overdue but no less deserved. Lawless swings over the ball from the right and Fitzpatrick applies the finish with his head. 

Gaston is out his box quickly to clear a through ball as Thistle continue to press

Clever play from Lawless at the edge of the box gives him a chance to lift a cross into the box that eludes the reach of Graham. 

Turner lofts a ball into the box that Graham does well to twist his head to reach but can't direct his header downwards though it doesn't clear the bar by much. 

Muirhead is able to get his head to Turner's corner but can't keep the header down. 

Great save from Gaston low to his right to deny Dowds after Docherty had robbed Jacobs of the ball. 

Craigen gets the better of Milne but can't bend his shot beyond Mitchell and Thistle have a goal kick. 

Crowd: 1,960. 

No joy again as once more Turner sees his corner well defended. Tiffoney picks up the ball outside the Arbroath box but his shot is blocked at close range by a defender. 

Thistle keep up the pressure after Turner's corner is cleared but the ball eventually ends up in Gaston's hands. 

Dowds at the stretch can't get the touch required to a cross from the right to nudge Thistle in front. 

Still no way through for Thistle as the game moves towards the hour mark. 

Thistle are going to be required to defend here as Arbroath win a free kick deep inside the Thistle have. Or rather they should be required to defend by the visitors make a mess of the free kick. 

Tiffoney has an opportunity to shoot but from a yard or two outside the box he drags his effort wide of Gaston's left hand post. 

Tiffoney's pass looking for Dowds is little overhit allowing Gaston to safely collect. 

That's a second cynical challenge from Hilson. This time he collects a yellow card for his foul on Tiffoney with the Thistle player needing some treatment before play can restart. 

And no change in the direction of play as Tiffoney fizzes a shot not that far wide of goal. 

We're back underway at Firhill. No changes at the break from either side it appears. 

There has been much to be impressed with in that first half Thistle performance but no goals. 

If there is one compliant it is that Thistle haven't worked Gaston in the Arbroath goal quite as much as they would have liked. 

It's been almost total Thistle dominance though.

Linn screws a shot well wide of the Thistle goal. 

Turner takes the corner and despite his best efforts, Holt can't get a clean head to the ball and Arbroath have a goal kick as we near the interval. 

Gaston rather fumbles a Dowds' shot round the post for Thistle's first corner. 

Turner is able to touch the ball back to Tiffoney at the edge of the box but Tiffoney's low shot doesn't pose Gaston too many problems. 

Bannigan doesn't get enough on the ball as he clears from the edge of the box buy Jacobs' shot doesn't threaten the Thistle goal. 

Tiffoney reacts angerly as the flag goes up for offside against him as he gathers Turner's pass. 

There is an obvious push on Milne from Fosu as he tries to reach Allan's corner. 

The game's first corner comes the way of the visitors. 

That's really harsh as Bannigan looks to win the ball cleanly at the edge of the Arbroath box but is instead penalised for a foul and booked into the bargain. 

So close for Thistle. Docherty picks out McMillan on the right. McMillan's shot looks as if it might be going in at the far corner only for Dowds to slide in and send the ball over the bar. 

Dowds isn't able to get his head to Turner's free kick. 

More pressure on the Arbroath goal with Tiffoney eventually fouled wide on the left. 

Thistle have had far and way the better of this game so far and should be in front. 

Turner's free kick is well defended but the ball is picked up by Tiffoney who overhits his cross. 

Hilson is a little lucky to escape a yellow card for a foul on Turner but Thistle will have a chance to test the Arbroath defence with the free kick. 

Turner's free kick goes to the front post where Dowds tries to flick the ball goalwards before Docherty is a shade unfortunate to see his shot blocked by a defender. 

It's a Thistle free kick in from the Arbroath corner flag on the Thistle left. 

It's great play from Tiffoney to find McMillan wide on the right but McMillan's cross is cleared. 

There is a nice tempo to Thistle's play in the opening minutes. On this occasion though Turner's pass is a little too high for Dowds. 

Turner threads through a gem of a pass looking for Dowds' run but the Thistle striker goes just a fraction of a second too early and up goes the flag for offside. 

Thistle are starting to build up a head of steam and Lawless' chipped effort from well outside the box just fails to escape the reach of Gaston. 

Thistle miss a gilt edged chance to take the lead. Docherty takes the ball past Gaston but can neither squeeze the ball home or find Dowds to his right. 

An anxious moment for Thistle as Muirhead elects to leave Hilson's low cross for his goalkeeper unaware of the potential danger in doing so but Mitchell does safely collect. 

Turner whips the free kick in but it is a shade too near Gaston who makes a confident catch.

Thistle get things underway, shooting towards The John Lambie Stand in the first half. 

As Thistle look to record a third successive Firhill victory attention switches away from the league to the Premier Sports Cup and the first of a double header against Arbroath. 

This is a tournament that manager Ian McCall places a lot of importance on and one that features large in the history of Partick Thistle and while he has shuffled his pack a little this evening this is still a side selected with eyes firmly set on a place in the next round. 

There are three changes from the side that started on Saturday against Raith Rovers. 

In come Aaron Muirhead, who did so well in helping to shore up the Thistle defence in those tense closing minutes of that 2-1 win, Kyle Turner and Anton Dowds. 

Brian Graham, Cole McKinnon and Tunji Akinola are the three that will start the game on what looks to be an extremely strong Thistle substitute bench.
