Last Friday night’s victory against Inverness Caledonian Thistle was a special night under the Firhill floodlights.
It was a memorable night off the park too as we welcomed Thistle Hall of Famers Kris Doolan, Chris Erskine and Denis McQuade home as part of our Former Players Association. The Partick Thistle Women’s team also made the trip to Firhill to watch their manager Brian Graham net a double on the way to three points.
There was, however, another extra special guest in attendance last Friday, Scott Easton, the great grandson of Thistle’s pioneering manager George Easton, and his partner Rachel Gillespie.
Scott’s partner Rachel reached out to the Club following our plea for relatives of the 1921 Scottish Cup winning team to attend a match in the early stages of last season. Diary clashes meant their pilgrimage to Firhill was unable to be fulfilled until Friday night’s game against Inverness – and what an occasion to mark the trip.
Met by Club historians, Scott was provided with a tour of Firhill, including the Colin Weir Stand, built during his great grandfather’s reign as manager of the Club. During the course of the night the Club presented him with a commemorative 1921 medal & 1921 book, written by Firhill Football Heritage.
Chief Executive Gerry Britton said:
“It was fantastic to welcome Scott and Rachel to Firhill for a trip that was a long time in the making. George Easton was an iconic manager for us in the early years of Partick Thistle as a Club and was heavily involved when the Club moved to Firhill. It was through his vision and approach to football that the Club were able to build the Colin Weir Stand in 1927. To welcome relatives of a Thistle great back home to Firhill was another proud moment on what was a great night last week.”
