SPFL Ladbrokes Premiership
Fri 16 August, 2013. Kick Off: - 19:45
Firhill Stadium, Glasgow
A Thistle victory this evening would, at least for a few hours, take us to the top of the newly formed Scottish Premiership. Not since August 1980, when Thistle opened the Premier League season with a 3-2 win over, coincidently enough, Hearts have Thistle stood proudly at the top of Scotland’s top league.
That would be a nice, if possibly short-lived, landmark to reach but of much greater importance than early league tables is the prospect of continuing a good start to the season with 3 points against a Hearts side that started the season with a 15 point deduction.
Just two games into the season, however, and their young side; rivalled perhaps only by ourselves in that respect, have already made inroads into their penalty imposed points deficit. A narrow 1-0 win over Hibs in last weekend’s Edinburgh derby will have filled Gary Locke’s side full of confidence for this evening’s encounter. A tough fixture between two young, talented teams is very much in prospect then.
Manager Alan Archibald took in Hearts game with Hibs last Sunday and he knows just how tough a game tonight’s will be.
“There is a great team spirit at Hearts and I think that they showed that last week in the Edinburgh derby. There may be wasn’t an awful lot of quality on show in the game but I think it was the team that wanted to win the match the most did so.”
Alan continued;
“Hearts are a young side, similar to ourselves, and they have a great hunger and desire. You find that when a team has a cause to fight for and we know that tonight’s game is going to be an extremely difficult one.”
Just as Hearts go into tonight’s game on the back of a confidence boosting result and performance last week so too do Thsitle who, of course, enjoyed an excellent 3-1 win at Ross County.
Said Alan;
“It was an excellent performance last week but the players know that they need to try and live up to the standards that they set in that match although we know that it isn’t possible to play that well every week.”
The only real selection headache that the manager has ahead of tonight’s game centres on who to leave out.
“Jordan McMillan is the only player missing through injury”, said Alan before continuing;
“Stuart Bannigan played 80 minutes of the Scotland under 21 game with England on Tuesday night and he came through that okay. It can’t have been nice being part of a team that lost 6-0 but he was up against experienced players in the English Premiership and I’m sure he would have enjoyed being part of that and more importantly will have learned from the experience.”
Alan went on;
“I’ve a really good squad at the moment with the players not playing really pushing the players that are hard for their place. It’s understandable that those that aren’t picked are disappointed but as I’ve said to them; they will all get their chance at some stage. I think they’ve bought into that. I think you could see that at Ross County last Saturday when the substitutes were celebrating just as hard as those on the pitch were doing.”

Firhill served up another Friday night cracker but Thistle, after having finally taken the lead, were to be denied what would have been a richly deserved three points by a Hearts equaliser with just two minutes of the game remaining.
Following the impressive display and result at Ross County manager Alan Archibald simply said “same again”, selecting the same starting eleven and seven subs for a game that would have seen his side go top of the league, at least overnight, had they won.
Archibald’s faith in his players was rewarded with a sparkling first half display but somehow no goal. Thistle were on the front foot from the very first whistle and at times during the opening 45 minutes they had the Hearts goal under virtual siege as they took complete control of midfield.
A cracking atmosphere inside the ground added to the spectacle and the Thistle fans were celebrating, albeit very briefly, when Kris Doolan had the ball in the Hearts net in the 9th minute. Doolan was on hand to divert a mishit shot from Conrad Balatoni past MacDonald in the Hearts goal but he was correctly ruled to be offside.
The first half was in truth a procession of Thistle chances. Steven Lawless tested MacDonald with a low drive in the 13th minute before a minute later Kris Doolan sent a snap shot just wide of the Hearts keeper’s right hand post.
Former Hearts player Conrad Balatoni nearly scored against his old club when he headed a Stephen O’Donnell cross over the bar in the 19th minute as Hearts struggled to get the ball out of their own half.
As the pressure continued to mount Thistle were again close to an opening goal in the 25th minute. James Craigen collected an excellent Sean Welsh pass before chipping the ball towards the Hearts goal. Unfortunately Kris Doolan wasn’t quite able to glance a header into the net.
Sean Welsh was in excellent form in the Thistle midfield and he was inches away from capping his impressive performance with a goal in the 36th minute with a shot from the right corner of the Hearts box that only just cleared the crossbar.
Still Thistle pressed and still no goal would come. James Craigen saw a fierce shot blocked by a Hearts defender and a first time shot from Kris Doolan, after more enterprising play from Sean Welsh, went narrowly over the bar.
The first half ended as it had started with Thistle well in control and the final action of the opening 45 minutes saw MacDonald again in action; this time saving well from Steven Lawless.
The second half started with Kallum Higgenbotham on in place of Sean Welsh who had picked up a knock just prior to the interval. The pattern of the game, however, changed little. Thistle were quickly into their stride again and James Craigen was close with an angled drive across the body of MacDonald; the ball though going narrowly wide of target.
Hearts though were gradually able to get a foot hold in the game and as the second half wore on Thistle weren’t quite as dominant as they had been in the first half. Chances for the visitors though continued to be at a premium. Danny Wilson, however, wasn’t too far away with a header following a McHattie corner from the Hearts right.
That near thing produced an instant response from Thistle. Gary Fraser crashed a shot just over the bar from the edge of the Hearts box and MacDonald did well to grab hold of a John Baird cross with Steven Lawless waiting to apply the finish.
MacDonald was becoming increasingly hard pressed to prevent Thistle from scoring and he made impressive saves from a James Craigen header from a John Baird cross and from Baird himself whose first time shot after collecting a Fraser pass looked destined for the back of the net.
The pick of MacDonald’s saves, however, came in the 84th minute when he somehow managed to get down to his left hand corner and flick a Steven Lawless effort round the post for a corner.
It was only a temporary reprieve though for Hearts who conceded a penalty from the corner that followed. John Baird was bundled to the ground by Walker and referee Madden pointed to the spot.
Aaron Muirhead was the man to take the penalty and he banished memories of the Ramsdens Cup Final once and for all when he lashed an unstoppable penalty past MacDonald and into the net.
With time running out Thistle surely had the game won now? Not at all. This Hearts side are certainly not lacking in spirit and just three minutes after falling behind they were back on level terms. Jamie Walker was able to make amends for his part in the Thistle penalty when he buried a shot past a helpless Scott Fox.
It was a cruel sting in the tail for Thistle who had again demonstrated that they are more than capable of being an asset in the Scottish Premiership.
Having come so close to a deserved victory over Hearts last night there was an understandable sense of disappointment at the end of the game.
Manager Alan Archibald, however, when speaking with [link:HOME] after the game was anything but disappointed with the way his players had performed; even though they didn’t manage to get the win they so merited.
“I’m proud about how they went about the game tonight. They passed the ball well and everything they did was great. I thought that we dominated possession in the first half and we were just missing the goal. When the goal did come I just wish we could have hung on. That couple of minutes after scoring a goal is always a worrying period for a manager.”
“I think if we had just a bit more clinical in the final third tonight it would have been different but it is important that they keep on believing in themselves. They are a bit despondent at the moment because it feels like a defeat but we’ll pick them up and we’ll go again.”
The goal, when it did come, was emphatically converted by Aaron Muirhead who showed great courage to step up having missed his last penalty in the Ramsdens Cup Final last season.
Said Alan;
“I think that put a couple of demons to bed for the big man. It would have been a great ending for him after what happened to him last season. There was a lot of pressure on him as well as a couple of other boys wanted to take the penalty but he was a credit to himself.”
There was praise too from the Thistle manager for the Hearts side.
“I said before the game that Hearts are similar side to us. They’ve got a hunger and a desire and also a fight for their club and their manager. Their fans really backed their team tonight as well; just as our fans did.”
The fact that everyone was do disappointed not to have won last night is an indication of just how far the Club has developed over the last 12 months or so.
“Who would have thought a year ago that we would be disappointed at only taking a point from Hearts. They were a credit to themselves tonight though and, as I said, I was proud of the way they played. It was just disappointing that we couldn’t get the win for the fans.”
To round things up the manager gave us an update on Sean Welsh who was forced to come off at half-time through injury after a hugely impressive first 45 minutes from the Thistle midfielder.
“He got a really bad leg right on half-time and he was struggling to shake it off. We gave him to the end of the half and we tried to work on the injury at half-time but it wasn’t enough. We moved Stuart Bannigan inside and gave Kallum Higginbotham his home debut and I thought he was unlucky not to score.”
