What can one say about that score-line? Very impressive indeed. All those who travelled down to the match in Dumfries had a great day out.
There was little hint in the first ten minutes or so of what lay ahead, but once Thistle stormed into the lead after 17 minutes there was never any doubt as to the identity of the eventual winners. Guess who was first to find the net. Correct, first time – yes, Kris Doolan. Stephen O’Donnell added a second three minutes before half-time, so we went in with a distinct spring in the step.
Could we continue to dominate proceedings in the second-half? The answer became clear after 20 minutes when ace marksman Kris Doolan helped himself to his second of the afternoon to give Thistle a commanding lead. Five minutes later Chris Erskine got in on the act and the final goal came after 85 minutes from Christie Elliott, to complete a truly memorable afternoon. He had come on as a substitute ten minutes previously, so didn’t take long to make his presence felt.
The Thistle team was beginning to shape up nicely and there was a feeling we would soon be ready to have another crack at the Premier Division, and so it proved. They say variety is the spice of life and it has certainly been the case down Firhill way. As Thistle supporters, we have sampled life in various divisions, always rising back to the top league.
The team which performed so admirably at Palmerston Park was as follows :- Ryan Scully, Stephen O’Donnell, Aaron Sinclair, Paul Paton, Scott Robertson, Alan Archibald, Paul Cairney, David Rowson, Kris Doolan, Sean Welsh, Chris Erskine.
I can’t believe the featured game was more than six years ago, Of the players listed above, only Kris Doolan, Chris Erskine and substitute Christie Elliott remain at Firhill.
In goal for Queen of the South was Lee Robinson. Choosing my words very carefully, I shall say simply that you will remember well the part he played in Thistle NOT winning the Ramsdens’s Cup. I’m still seething about that!
