Saturday sees Gary Caldwell’s side take on Hamilton Accies in Thistle’s third match in the Betfred Cup Group Stage. A win could see the Jags secure their place at the top of the group but the Thistle gaffer knows it will be no easy task.
Caldwell spoke exclusively to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the game and started by looking back on the first two games his side has faced in the competition.
“The first two games have both been really challenging fixtures which is exactly what you want at this time of year. Saturday’s match against Accies should, on paper, be the toughest challenge and we probably will have to play better than we have done so far but we have the confidence and belief that we can go there and win.
“Accies have kept their place in the Premiership for a number of years now and there’s a reason for that. They are a good team with great experience and we know what threat they will bring. It’s up to us to match that.
“The Scottish Premiership is ultimately where we want to be so tests like the one we will face this weekend will give us a good idea of where we are. What’s more, a win will take us another step forward towards winning the group which is exactly where we want to be at the end of the game against Clyde.
Caldwell spen Thursday night in the Alan Rough Lounge speaking to more than 150 Jags fans about various aspects of the Club. Some lively debate and interesting discussion came through and it is something the Thistle boss is keen to do more of in the future.
“I love events like that and I think it’s really important for me to meet as many fans as I can. I enjoyed talking football and explaining my thought process and I hope those who were there took something positive from it. That kind of communication is really important and I certainly hope that we can have a few more similar nights like it in the coming months.”
Finally Caldwell gave us the all important team news ahead of Saturday as well as offering an update on Gary Harkins who went under the knife for an ankle operation this week.
“We’re in a great position in terms of fitness with everyone available for the Accies game. There were a couple of knocks and niggles after the last game but thankfully after 24 hours they’ve all settled down.
“The only player who will be missing is Gary Harkins. He had to go into hospital for an operation on a long standing ankle injury this week. He’s felt it since last season and has probably played when maybe he wasn’t fully fit. He tried to work through it in pre-season but struggled so it was definitely something that needed done.
“In terms of recovery I’m always reluctant to put an exact timescale on it but the surgeon recommends eight to nine weeks so hopefully it won’t be too much longer than that.”

Partick Thistle continued their Betfred Cup campaign this afternoon against Hamilton Accies at the FOYS Stadium as the group’s two top-ranked teams went head-to-head.
Thistle hit the front first as Ryan Williamson bagged his first Jags goal on 16 minutes but the visitors’ lead lasted for but 60 seconds as Ross Cunningham immediately struck back for the hosts. Cunningham was on target once again eight minutes into the second half before Shea Gordon restored parity with 17 minutes to play.
Hamilton did have a penalty in the 75th minute but Aaron McGowan blazed it over, sending the teams to a full set of spot kicks from which Accies emerged victorious by six converted penalties to five.
Jags boss, Gary Caldwell, spoke to ptfc.co.uk after the final whistle, beginning with a summary of the match from his point of view:
“I think it was an entertaining game of football for neutrals. I thought we played well; especially in the first half when we really dominated the game. We should have been in front at half-time but, second half, they changed their shape and we were too slow in getting to grips with that which is the big lesson we learn from the game.
“After some time though, we did work it out and I felt we were the stronger team for the last 15 minutes and we really caused them problems late on. We put three strikers on the park and tried to win the game, unfortunately, we weren’t able to but I was still pleased with the display.”
Hamilton scored within 60 seconds of Thistle’s 16th minute opener and when the Jags made it 2-2 late in the game, Accies had a penalty before two minutes had passed. The gaffer told us that these momentary lapses in concentration will be an area to work on for the Maryhill men.
“Those incidents were very frustrating for me. In the first half, they didn’t really create that much, we scored the goal, switched off and allowed them back into the game. We spoke about that at half-time but in the second half, we made the exact same mistake so that’s something we’ll look to fix very quickly.
“It is that time of the season when there will be little issues like this one that we’ll need to brush up on. We’re still developing as a team but I saw a lot of positive things again today and I think that was our best performance of the three so far, albeit we weren’t quite able to get the win.”
Gary then went a bit more in-depth on the changes Hamilton made at half-time and how his side responded to those alterations.
“They went to three-at-the-back so we went to three up top. I think we became slightly anxious as a team after their change and I’ve said to the boys, we’ve got to be quicker in adjusting and working out what we’re up against.
“We needed to play fewer passes in our own half and get more up to the guys in attack and our second goal was perfect example of that. Raffa De Vita played it up, we won the ball, fed it wide, crossed it in and we score from the midfield runners. We had more opportunities to score from those sort of scenarios as well.”

Hamilton win the penalty shootout 6-5 with Raffa De Vita's spot kick proving decisive as Fon Williams stopped the Italian's effort.
Cardle plays it out to the right to Mansell who plays a great ball back into the box and Shea GORDON has the task of taking a touch and firing Thistle level.
Hamiltom break and the ball is played out left to Cunningham who stands up Tam O'Ware and curls it into the corner past Fox.
Cardle gets down the right and swings a ball in, Miller gets his head to it but his header is past the right post.
A cut back from the right is fired past Scott Fox by Ross Cunningham
A ball into the area is deflected wide by a defender and falls to Ryan WILLIAMSON who fires in from a tight angle.
