Thistle return to Ladbrokes Championship action tomorrow afternoon as the Jags hit the road to the City of Discovery to take on James McPake’s Dundee side. Ahead of the trip to Dens Park, Alan Archibald spoke to ptfc.co.uk to preview the match.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge. They have a big squad and talented squad. They have just come down from the Premiership and that brings a bit of expectancy and we have to use that against them by frustrating their fans.
“We can do that by starting well, and playing well. That will frustrate them and it will give us something to build on.”
After a physical encounter last week there was a number of bumps and bruises in the camp but Archie was pleased to report full attendance at training.
“There were a couple of knocks but you get that when you are in a battle. Sean McGinty had to get stitches above his eye, Tam O’Ware had a black eye, Penners had a cut which and Raffa took a bump but that has all disappeared by Tuesday. Everyone has been training well this week looking ahead to Saturday’s game.”
Also returning to the matchday squad are Shea Gordon and Cammy Palmer after both featured for Northern Ireland under 21s against Denmark and Romania
“It’s always hard when players go away on international duty, having been in the team because they don’t play for us when they are away so they have to win their places back. We did well in the midfield and defensive areas last weekend so it has given us a real conundrum as to what we go with – but that is exactly what you want. We’ve got good players, players on form who can go and give us quality if they get picked to start.”
Last week saw Thistle keep their first clean sheet in a number of games and the Jags are keen to make it consecutive clean sheets at Dens Park tomorrow afternoon.
“There was real team spirit and desire to not let them score as goal. The goal-line clearance from, it was Sean I think, was outstanding. That would have let them back in the game. We had to go and battle and do old fashioned defending, putting bodies in the way and making sure that we gave nothing to the opposition. It’s going to be very much more of the same when we go to Dundee tomorrow.”

Thistle emerged from this afternoon’s match at Dens Park with all three points after a trio of late goals overcame a deficit to win the match. Kenny Miller notched for the Jags before Shea Gordon and Lewis Mansell both netted in the 90th minute to put the seal on the three points. Jags gaffer Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk shortly after the game.
“I thought for 30 minutes we were outplayed, We couldn’t get a hold of McGowan or Dorrans at all. We had a good spell towards the end of the first half and missed a terrific chance.
“We changed it at the break, the subs were tactical. In the second half we were on top for the first 25 minutes and didn’t get the goal and you get the feeling with the game so stretched that Dundee could get another one. Then we scored three great goals. On the second half performance we thoroughly deserved our win.”
Kenny Miller got the scoring underway with a composed finish after being picked out by Ryan Williamson.
“It’s a great finish, That is Kenny on 8 goals which is remarkable. It was also a brilliant finish from Shea and I’m delighted for young Lewis Mansell to get his first of the season. It shows the league is going to be incredibly tight this season.”
The impact of the Jags half time subs brought an increased intensity and energy to the side and Ian was delighted with the impact from the bench.
“It is always nice to get the impact from the subs, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t and thankfully it worked today. It was great to see our fans happy like that at the end. They travelled up here in brilliant numbers and we’ve sent them home happy. That is 4 games and we’ve won three of them which is great.”
Gary Harkins made his first appearance of the season after a spell on the sidelines with injury and the manager was pleased to see him back on the pitch.
” He thinks he should have scored with his header and he is always capable of doing something. I’ve known him for a long time, but today was just a great day and win for our club.”
