Match Preview

Partick Thistle v Connah’s Quay Nomads – 12th October 2019

It’s back to Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup action for Partick Thistle this weekend as they take on Connah’s Quay Nomads with a place in the competition’s quarter-final at stake. The Nomads made it all the way to the final of the cup last season so will provide tough opposition for the Jags who want to get back to winning ways following a disappointing defeat to Queen of the South in the Ladbrokes Championship last week. Jags assistant manager, Alan Archibald, spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the clash:

“I think everyone looks forward to cup games, no matter what competition it is and it’s a great chance for us to get to the quarter-finals. I’ve got fond memories of this cup with the run to the final in 2013 and it was a terrific backing we got out at Livingston that day so I think it’s a cup that can excites the fans and players alike the further you get.”

Against Queen of the South, Thistle didn’t hit the heights that they managed the week prior against Inverness and the management team are hoping to get back on track with a victory against Connah’s Quay.

“Any victory helps the group and we’re hoping we can get back to winning ways this weekend. You saw what it meant to the boys at Inverness when the third goal went in and then at the final whistle – it meant a lot to all of them. We want to get that feel good moment again and especially at home because we’ve had a poor run of results at home this season.”

Although Alan is hopeful of a win, he’s under no illusions about the challenge they face in Connah’s Quay. Andy Morrison’s team knocked Scottish Premiership side, Kilmarnock, out of the Europa League qualifying rounds and have been in formidable form in the Cymru Premier so will be looking to book another trip to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals as they make the long trip up to Maryhill.

“It’s definitely not going to be an easy game. They obviously beat a few good teams in the cup last year and got that away win at Kilmarnock, albeit it was early in Killie’s season, but we certainly don’t expect them to roll over.

“I watched their game during the week and they’re very well organised and know their roles individually. They can be quite physical too but they don’t hide it and it’s garnered results for them so that’s something we’ll have to be mindful of. On top of that, because they’re in such good league form they’ll be full of confidence and I can’t imagine they’ll be looking to sit in and defend.”

With the potential of a physically demanding game against the Nomads, Archibald is hoping the players will stand up to the challenge and take control of the tie.

“We have to win the battle firstly and then we can try to make the pitch as big as possible and play our game. Also, we want to get more shots on goal because we didn’t test the ‘keeper enough last week and it’s no use having the ball in the final third if you can’t actually get shots on target.”

Cammy Palmer and Shea Gordon both miss the game as they’re away on international duty and Dario Zanatta is cup-tied so there will be at three changes to the side that took on Queen of the South last week and Alan is looking for those who come in and get their chance to make the most of it.

“We will have to make changes and there will be guys coming in who won’t have had many minutes since the new manager came in so hopefully they’ll see it as a chance to impress and really give it their all.”

More exclusive preview interviews with Steven Saunders, Ryan Williamson and Thistle assistant manager, Alan Archibald, are now available to JagZone subscribers – log in to see them.

Thistle 2 - Connah's Quay Nomads 0

That hopefully removes the likliehood of extra-time being rquired. It's an easy finish for Penrice who collects a pass from Robson before tucking the ball home from 6 yards out for his first goal of the season.

76’

Bakare hooks the ball goalwards but it's an easy gather for Fox.

68’

Miller misses an absolute sitter after being set up by De Vita. He takes a touch to steady himself and from no more than 6 yards out and with virtually the whole goal to aim at hits the ball over the bar.

65’

Fox doesn't claim the corner and the ball is hacked off the line but the referee had spotted a free kick in any case and Thistle have a free kick.

64’Connah's Quay Nomads corner from the right

McGinty makes a great clearance from Roberts driven low cross into the Thistle 6 yard box. Good spell for the visitors.

63’

Fox makes his first direct save of the game and it is a good one as he pushes away a well struck effort from the edge of the box from Morris.

62’

Miller charges down Brass' clearance and that nearly brings Thistle and Miller some reward but the Nomads escape without any further damage.

59’

Not quite sure what the intent was with that free kick but De Vita's free kick ends up in the arms of keeper Brass. De Vita looks at his team mates in anguish.

58’

Cardle is caught a little late and Thistle have a free kick near the left edge of the Nomads box. A little too far out for a direct effort on goal though.

57’Connah's Quay Nomads substitution: Jamie Insall replaces James Owen

56’

De Vita's flick from a cross on the right goes a yard or so over the crossbar.

55’

53’

McGinty is forced to clear as Bakare gets in behind the Thistle defence on the Jags left.

48’

As expected the free kick is thumped into the Thistlw box but the referee spots an infringement and Thistle have a free kick.

48’

The Nomads win a free kick just inside the Thistle half but this will be aimed deep into the Jags box.

45’

We're back underway.

45’

McGinty is back on and Thistle are back to full numbers.

45’

Minimum of two additional minutes to be played.

44’

McGinty is having to go off and get his cut forehead attended to. He clearly thinks that he was caught by the raised elbow of a Nomads player.

43’

Thistle are well on top at the moment and De Vita isn't too far away from his and Thistle's second goal of the afternoon with an angled shot that goes narrowly wide.

43’

Cardle's corner is headed clear.

42’Thistle corner from the right
39’Thistle corner from the right
39’Thistle corner from the right

Miller doesn't really catch a shot at the edge of the box cleanly but Brass still has to scramble to get the ball round the post.

35’

The Nomads pump a free kick from just inside their half deep into the Thistle box. It forces Thistle back towards their own goal and twice shots come in that are well blocked by defenders.

34’

Miller is in behind The Nomads defence but as he heads towards goal up goes the flag for offside.

33’Goal Thistle! Raffaele De Vita
Thistle 1 - Connah's Quay Nomads 0

It's  a simple yet well constructed goal for Thistle. Kakay is again involved as he plays a neat pass to wolliamson whose cross is met by De Vita who plants a firm header into the back of the net.

26’

We're back underway after that short break.

25’

Break in play for The Nomads keeper Brass to receive some treatment. He looks to be holding his hamstring.

24’

Kakay on the right has looked Thistle's best outlet for a chance and he does well to get the ball to Williamson whose cross is cleared.

23’

Cardle's corner is deep towards the back post. Saunders is able to get his head to the ball but with two defenders in close attention he can't get above the ball and his header drops wide.

22’Thistle corner from the right

Brass has to scramble to turn a Miller header from a Cardle cross round the post for Thistle's first corner of the game.

19’

Cardle spreads the ball out wide to Williamson. Williamson cuts inside from the right and from a few yards outside the box drags a left foot shot wide of goal.

19’

It is another long throw ad Wilde sees his shot blocked when the ball falls into his path.

18’

The Nomads have a throw right next to the Thistle corner flag. Another long throw incoming.

13’

McGinty is back in action although his head is once again bandaged.

12’

Play is halted for McGinty to receive some treatment.

11’

Kakay, playing on the ride side of midfield, makes good progress down the right hand side but his cross is a little too deep and although Cardle does manage to hook the ball towards goal it's an easy catch for Brass.

10’

Bannigan tries to send Cardle clear down the left hand side but Farquharson is too strong for Cardle and the ball goes out for a goal kick.

06’

First promising signs from Thistle as Kakay and Williamson combine well down the rigth hand side but at the edge of the box Cardle can't find room for a shot and any chance is snuffed out.

05’

Owen's corner is far too deep and The Nomads are forced back towards their own goal.

04’Connah's Quay Nomads corner from the right

01’

The nomads should have the lead. There is a terrible mix up in the Thistle defence that leaves Wilde with what looks like the simplest of chances to score but he doesn't get enough power behind his shot and the ball is cleare from near the goal line.

01’

A long throw from Farquharson poses the Thistle defence some problems. They don't really get the ball clear and a shot comes in but it clears the crossbar.

00’

Thistle kick the game off and are shooting towards the city end in the first half.

00’Kick-Off

00’Introduction

Is it late afternoon or early evening? Certainly a 5:15pm Firhill kick-off time is something a bit different. As our Tunnock's Caramel Wefare Challenge Cup opponents, Connah's Quay Nomads.

The Cymru Premier League side reached last season's Final and earlier this season knocked Kilmarnock out of this season's Europa League so there is little doubt that the Welsh side will provide Thistle with an extremely stearn test this afternoon.

There was disappointment for Thistle last weekend with defeat at home to Queen of the South and manager Ian McCall's team selection shows four changes from tha match.

Both Shea Gordon and Cammy Palmer are on international duty with Northern Ireland while Dario Zanatta is cup-tied. Tommy Robson meantime drops to the bench for this fixture.

Coming into the starting eleven are James Penice, Raffa De Vita, Osman Kakay and Steven Saunders.

Included among the six listed Thistle subs are Gary Harkins and Craig Slater who make their first appearances of the season as they recover from injury.

Match Reaction

Partick Thistle v Connah’s Quay Nomads – 12th October 2019

After a tough examination by Connah’s Quay Nomads, Thistle progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup courtesy of goals from James Penrice and Raffaele De Vita. A pleased Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk shortly after the full time whistle.

“I thought we thoroughly deserved it. 2-0 didn’t flatter us. There was a lot of things to like about how we played in the first half and we didn’t get embroiled in how they wanted to play. I’ve got no issues with how they want to play. They play a system that suits them and gets them results so it was really, really pleasing to get a win. To have two wins out of the last three is a good start.

Connah’s Quay proved to be stubborn opposition and it was a couple of moments of quality which saw the Jags through.

“Listen, we all know the good results they have had up in Scotland. They made it to the final last season, had a good result against Kilmarnock and beat a good Cove Rangers side in the last round.

“At times you have to be very, very patient with the ball. You have to move the ball about, if you need to go back to the goalkeeper then you need to do that. They sat off and let us have the ball in our half of the pitch, sat deep and then pressed then. I thought we passed it well first half and stood up to them. It was terrific.”

There were strong performances throughout the side and the gaffer was pleased to emerge with a clean sheet.

“I’m really, really pleased to get a win and a clean sheet at Firhill. I thought the two centre backs and Tam O’Ware stood up well to the aerial threat. Stuart Bannigan was wonderful. Kenny Miller was terrific for the entire game. He bough us a lot of fouls and got us out.

“I thought Osman Kakay did very well down the right as well. We lack a bit of pace but I thought him and Ryan Williamson were a real threat down the right hand side of the team. There wasn’t a single failure in the team today.

With a place booked in the next round Ian is keen that the cup journey continues even deeper into the tournament.

“The last time Thistle were in the final we took 6,000 fans to Livingston. We’re in the quarter finals and the competition now starts to take shape. We’ll see what the draw hands us – hopefully a home tie – and prepare for it when it comes.”

A more in depth video interview with Neil Scally is available to Jagzone subscribers now as well as Thistle players, Raffaele De Vita, James Penrice – log in to view.
