Match Preview

Aberdeen v Partick Thistle – 30th August 2014

Ahead of Thistle’s clash against Aberdeen tomorrow manager, Alan Archibald, gave ptfc.co.uk the latest news on how things are going in the Firhill camp.

Alan said: “Foxy is back available for the game but I haven’t really thought too much about who I’m going to play. As I’ve said before, I don’t concern myself because I have two very good goalkeepers, it’s a great problem to have but it’s going to be a tough decision. Both of them have showed in the past few weeks how important and valuable they are to the squad.

“The quality Aberdeen have, probably makes them the second strongest squad in the league after Celtic, they have quality in areas all over the pitch. They’re rightly up there with Dundee United as favourites to finish second.

“They had an outstanding season last time round which was great for them but it does mean they’ve become a scalp, they were for us last year and they will be for others this time round. Having said that, they were back in training very early for the Europa league so it will have been difficult for them to adjust. If we play the way we know we can there is no reason why we can’t go up there and get a result.

“We definitely have lessons to learn from last week’s game against Hamilton. We did create chances but didn’t capitalise on them, that, combined with giving away poor goals was what led to us losing all three points when we really should have had the game put to bed.

“We started to put that result behind us with the win against Morton on Tuesday. That was a hard game against a good team and we did well to see it out at 1-0. Now we just need to kick on and play to our potential on Saturday. We showed great character against County and Dundee so we just need to remember that and learn our lessons.

“Our first home win last season came against Aberdeen so we know we can do it and the players take great heart from that. We’re all looking forward to Saturday and hopefully we can come back down the road with all three points.”

New signing Jake Carroll could feature for the Jags on Saturday but there remain question marks over Dan Seaborne and Jordan McMillan, both with hamstring problems as well as Gary Fraser and Abdul Osman who both picked up knocks

Match Report

Aberdeen v Partick Thistle – 30th August 2014

Aside from a couple of wins during John Lambie’s third spell as Thistle manager Pittodrie hasn’t been too happy a hunting ground for Thistle over the years and that trend continued in this game with the home side more than worthy 2-0 winners at the end of a match in which Thistle contributed little.

Three changes were made to the Thistle starting eleven from last weekend’s Premiership encounter with Hamilton. Dan Seaborne returned, Christie Elliott marked his 100th Thistle appearance with a start and there was a slot at left back for new signing Jake Carroll.

Aberdeen’s first effort on goal in this match came inside the first minute but Paul Gallacher, given the nod in goal ahead of the now free from suspension Scott Fox, was able to watch Goodwillie’s effort trickle wide of his right hand post.

The Thistle keeper, however, was altogether more hard pressed to keep out a Goodwillie header in the 16th minute after the Aberdeen striker was allowed a free header at a corner kick.

Less than a minute later it was the turn of Mark Reynolds to enjoy the freedom of the Thistle penalty box as Thistle were once more posted missing at a corner kick. This time it took a well placed Jake Carroll to keep the scores tied when he cleared off the line.

Aberdeen continued to dominate the game and Gallacher was called into action again in the 26th minute when he pushed away an effort from Niall McGinn and Jake Carroll was forced into making an important clearance after Nicky Low had almost walked his way past the Thistle defence.

Twice Abdul Osman had to clear dangerous crosses behind for Aberdeen corners and Paul Gallacher was required to tip a Reynolds header over the bar as Aberdeen pressed and pressed for an opening goal that they just couldn’t find in the first half.

At the other end Thistle offered very little during the opening 45 minutes with Stuart Bannigan and Kallum Higginbotham dragging efforts from distance wide of goal as Aberdeen keeper Langfield had a largely untroubled first 45 minutes.

Having survived the opening half without the loss of a goal it was frustrating in the extreme for Thistle to concede the opening goal less than 90 seconds after the restart; Nicky Low’s effort from just outside the Thistle box beating Paul Gallacher’s dive and finding the bottom of the Thistle net.

It was almost 2-0 in next to no time. A cross to the back post picked out Logan but he headed wide when he looked set to score.

It took until the hour mark for Thistle to offer much in the way of resistance and in his last contribution before being substituted, Christie Elliott saw his effort from just outside the Aberdeen box not go too far over the bar.

A minute later Jamie Langfield was required to make his first save of note when he had his hands stung by a fierce Higginbotham shot as Thistle started to offer hope that they might yet take something from the game.

Those hopes, however, were well and truly extinguished when Niall McGinn was able to double Aberdeen’s advantage in spectacular fashion in the 66th minute.

For a period it looked as if Aberdeen would add further goals before the end of the game and they were very close to a third goal in the 85th minute with Paul Gallacher doing extremely well to touch a Barry Robson free kick on to his left hand post.

Gallacher had to look lively too to just beat Goodwillie to a through ball before the final whistle brought some welcome relief to the Thistle fans who made the long trip to Aberdeen for little reward.

Match Reaction

Aberdeen v Partick Thistle – 30th August 2014

After a disappointing result at Pittodrie Alan Archibald spoke to ptfc.co.uk to give us his verdict on the result and performance.

“It’s a sore one to take today, their goals came from a couple of great strikes but we never really pushed them hard enough. To go in 0-0 at half time was good but to lose a goal when we did, so soon after the first half had started, was an absolute killer.”

Although the goals came from two wonderful strikes Archie didn’t feel that his side did themselves justice.

“I didn’t really think we got out of the box today, we wanted to start really well and we just didn’t really get out of the blocks. We knew the Aberdeen crowd could get hostile if we got at them early but we didn’t really manage that.

“We stood off them and let them play, we said that at half time, we have to get at them and not let them play. Our ball retention wasn’t good enough either which is normally something we do well, but today it was poor.”

Thistle went in 0-0 at half time and, while Aberdeen had arguably had the better of the play, the Jags had managed to keep them out. Just minutes after the second half started though, the Dons went one up through a Low strike.

“We got them in at half time spoke to them and I thought we had a chance but to go out there and shoot ourselves in the foot straight away is very disappointing.”

“Aberdeen were the better side, there’s no doubt about that, but we were disappointed with how we’ve played today. We didn’t get in their faces enough and we weren’t hard enough to play against. I think we brought the problems on ourselves today to be honest. We know Aberdeen have quality going forward and they certainly have strength in the three players behind the striker, but we didn’t cause them problems and you can see that with the two goals.”

The transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday and Archibald feels there is still business to be done.

“We’re still trying to get a couple more bodies in before the window closes. We picked up a couple of knocks today too so there is some work to do.”

One of those to pick up a knock was centre half, Conrad Balatoni who went off in the second half.

“He’s just done his hamstring, he’s stepped into the play and it has tweaked a little bit so we’ll wait and see.”
