It's another disappointment for Thistle as they fall to a second league defeat in the space of 4 days.
They twice come from behind to tie the scores but go down to a 4-2 defeat the clinching Ayr goal coming as Thistle pressed hard for a late equaliser.
And that seals it for the home side as McKenzie drills a shot past Mitchell.
Into time added on.
It's a good corner from McKinnon but it is headed clear. Only back to McKinnon who this time sees his cross headed clear off the line.
It's a poor corner from Fitzpatrick and Ayr try and break.
Weston again showing pace and energy, but he can't find space for a cross.
Mullen nods the ball on for Fitzpatrick who drills a low cross across the face of goal that nobody can get a touch to.
Weston's first involvement is really positive. He finds Dowds inside the box who sees his shot well saved by Albinson who is off his line to block.
Turner lifts the ball into the box but the referee spots a push and Ayr have a free kick.
Dowds draws a foul from his marker and Thistle have a free kick deep inside the Ayr half. Good delivery required.
A fourth Ayr goal would surely seal Thistle's fate and Murdoch isn't too far away from supplying that 4th goal with a drive that flashes wide of Mitchell's right-hand post.
Mullen almost has the shirt pulled from his back but there is no Thistle free kick as frustration grows.
It's not a great free kick from Turner and although Hodson does manage a shot it is blocked by a defender.
Mullen is fouled wide on the right, and Thistle have a free kick in a threatening position.
That's better from Thistle. McMillan has the ball on the right hand side of the Ayr box. He passes back to Bannigan whose shot just clears the Ayr box.
Mullin's shot flashes into the Thistle side netting. There is still more than enough time for Thistle to get back into this game, but they need a spark from somewhere.
Albinson comes all the way to the edge of his penalty box to head a Thistle free kick clear.
Turner's corner is headed clear at the front post. He gets the ball back, but his second cross is cleared too.
We're not seeing anything like the quality of football in the second half that we did in the first. That third Ayr goal, so soon after Thistle levelled, looks to have taken the wind out of Jags sails and it's all a bit of a struggle.
The score isn't level for long. Thistle don't clear and the ball falls to Mullin who drives a low shot into the net.
Mullin stoops to try and connect with a cross from the left but the ball goes wide.
We're all square again. It's Brian Graham that is given the credit for squeezing the ball over the line from close range.
The half-time whistle sounds bang on the 45 minute mark signalling the end of an entertaining half of football.
It's a half of football though that Thistle find themselves trailing at the end of.
The nature of the two goals conceded sums up how things have been going for Thistle of late. Tunji Akinola's clearance comes off Chalmers and flies into the net for the Ayr opener and after Lee Hodson had levelled things inside 60 seconds, Ayr regained their lead when Darren Brownlie headed into his own net.
Thistle have created chances galore and there has been much to be positive about, but the reality is that they find themselves behind at the interval.
Graham's snap shot is saved by Albinson.
Dowds is fouled giving Thistle a free kick. Just a shade too far out for a direct effort at goal. Tuner over the ball.
Akinemi's shot is blocked before Bannigan steps into clear.
Ayr's tails are up as they look to press home their advantage and Chalmers sends a shot over the Thistle crossbar.
Thistle are behind again and for the second midweek in a row find the net for the opposition. A cross comes over from the left that Brownlie heads into his own net.
Mullin sends over a really good cross from the Ayr right but thankfully, from a Thistle perspective, there is nobody able to get on the end of it.
Turner's corner is missed by Akinola at the back post and goes out for a goal kick.
Brownlie nods the corner on, but it is an easy take for Albinson.
Thistle have to make do with a corner after McMillan cuts into the box.
Brownlie gets Mullin's corner clear.
Akinola is foued and Thistle have a free kick wide on the right. It's cleared though and everyone draws breath after a frantic last 5 minutes of what was an entertaining, open game even before then.
Bannigan gives the ball back to Turner after his corner is cleared. Turner's delivery is better second time around, but Albinson makes a confident catch.
Thistle have a free kick outside the Ayr box. Turner's shot comes off the wall and back to Hodson whose shot doesn't quite have enough curl on it and goes wide of the post.
That's what you call an immediate response. The ball is crossed from the right and is bundled home by, we think, Hodson. It's all happening at the moment, and it is a struggle to keep up.
It's incredibly hard luck on Thistle and Akinola. Dempsey has space on the right and crosses, Akinola does well to clear, but the ball bounces off Chalmers who knows next to nothing about it.
Great chance from the corner. Turner finds Akinola who has a free header but heads wide.
Ayr nearly take the lead with their first serious look at the Thistle goal. Houston passes to Chalmers and it's a fine save from Mitchell close to his right-hand post that prevents Chalmers from putting his side in front.
Dowds does well to hold the ball up after receiving Bannigan's pass. He in turn finds Graham to his right but he shoots wide.
Thistle remain firmly on the front foot but this time Hodson's shot drops well wide of goal. Still a positive start from Thistle and precisely the type of reaction the manager would have been looking for. Very early days though.
Thistle look in the mood early on. Turner glides past an Ayr player before finding Bannigan. Bannigan though drags his shot from the edge of the box wide of goal.
It's nearly a dream start for Thistle with Albinson saving low to his left to keep out Milne's shot with Thistle unable to force the loose ball home.
It's a central defence of Akinola, Muirhead and Brownlie with Hodson sitting in midfield. McMillan and Milne hopefully providing width from the wing back areas.
We're underway. Thistle shooting towards the Away end in the first half.
There is an interesting look to the Thistle starting eleven as The Jags aim to go back top of the league following the disappointment of the weekend's defeat.
In come David Mitchell, Darren Brownlie, Anton Dowds and Tunji Akinola.
Jamie Sneddon and Cole McKinnon start the night on the bench while Stevie Lawless and Scott Tiffoney miss out entirely.
The exact shape of the Thistle team won't become clear obviously until the game kicks off but our best guess is that it will be a 5-3-2 formation.
