Match Preview

Celtic v Partick Thistle – 20th December 2016

In one sense it has been a long wait to play tonight’s fixture for Alan Archibald and his side – the original match having supposed to be played in August – but having faced Celtic just 10 days ago, the Jags boss could be forgiven for wanting not to see the champions again for a little bit longer.

When speaking to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the fixture though, Archie made it clear that his team was ready for the challenge and that there was a real determination to his players after they were beaten 4-1 at Firhill the last time the two sides met.

“Everyone has to play everyone, that is the nature of the league at this time of year. This match being rearranged for now just makes an already tough run of fixtures that little bit harder – that’s all it is.

“We actually wanted to push the fixture a wee bit later for both sets of fans – seeing as we played them so recently – but because of the winter we had last year the league wanted everything played as soon as possible.

“Celtic Park is a tough place to go just now, I was there the other night watching them play Hamilton and we know exactly what we’re going to be coming up against. The other side of it is that we know what we can do and we’re going into the fixture off the back of a very good second half performance against Hearts so we have plenty of confidence.

“We caused a lot of problems at Tynecastle and I thought we were the dominant side, especially in the second half, and created a lot of chances against a really good team. Truth be told we probably should have won the game but there were still plenty of positives to take away. We’ll look to bring them to Celtic Park and hopefully if all our players are on their game then we definitely have the opportunity to take something.”

Having seen exactly what Brendan Rogers’ Celtic are capable of the last time the two sides met, Archibald knows his side have to be tighter and more controlled to frustrate the Jags’ cross city neighbours.

“You’ve seen teams like Dundee frustrate them and a lot of that comes from not giving them easy chances. When we played them at Firhill we had a decent first half but a horrible five minutes after the break cost us and gave us a mountain to climb.

“People look away from fixtures like Tuesday night and just write us off. Other teams don’t expect you to pick up points from these kind of games so anything we do get is a bonus. We knew we were going into a tough run of fixtures but the league is still tight which is the main thing.

“Even though the end result was disappointing the last time we played Celtic we did show how you can get at them. We had a spell against them at Firhill when we scored and then had the goal chalked off so it is possible to go and cause them problems. The lads know that and it is exactly what we will be looking to go and do.”

93’Full Time Report

Thistle make Celtic work for their win ultimately pay the price for switching off at a Celtic free kick in the 15th minute, Sinclair scoring the game's only goal from the edge of the box.

There was no shortage of Thistle chances.

Azeez had the best of the first half chances but was denied by Gordon.

The best of the second half chances came the way of Ziggy Gordon who collected a pass from Amoo before dragging his shot wide.

45’Half Time Report

Thistle have competed well in the first half and Celtic will not have been too unhappy to hear the half-time whistle but the loss of another cheap goal sees The Jags trail at the interval.

Thistle had been expecting a 15th minute free kick from wide on the right to be swung into the box. Instead it was worked square to Sinclair's who first time shot found the net.

Prior to that Thistle had settled well into the game with Edwards and Azeez both seeing early efforts saved by Gordon.

For a period after the goal Celtic took control without creating too many chances but as half-time neared Thistle created a couple of real chances to score.

Firstly Azeez saw his shot deflected wide for a corner when left with Gordon to beat after a superb pass from Edwards and from the corner that followed Lindsay saw his header well saved by the Celtic keeper.

Thistle are still in this game but they simply can't afford to concede the next goal if they hope to emerge from the game with something to show for their efforts.

45’Half-Time

41’

Amoo's cross finds Welsh at the back post but his header hits a defender and Celtic get the break of the loose ball and clear.

40’Celtic Booking - Jozo Simunovic

36’

The corner is a good one and it finds the head of Lindsay but Gordon saves.

35’Thistle corner from the left

Edwards plays a delightful ball through to Azeez who can't find a way past Gordon as Thistle spurn an excellent chance to draw level.

34’

McGregor side steps a Thistle challenge and things open up in front of him but his effort from 20 yards out goes high and wide without troubling Cerny.

32’

Azzez battles, a little too strongly for the referee's liking, to latch onto a pass from Amoo and Celtic have a free kick.

31’

Welsh's chipped pass looking for the run of Azeez is too strong.

30’

Cerny is action again saving low, but fairly comfortably, from Dembele.

29’

And Thistle very nearly do just that but Cerny is well placed to save a low show.

28’

Since their goal Celtic have been in almost total control of the game alebit without creating much. Thistle though can't afford to concede a second goal.

25’

Azeez's quickly taken free kick finds Amoo down the right but his cross is far too deep.

13’

Welsh finds Lindsay with the corner but Lindsay sends his shot wide.

13’Thistle corner from the right

12’

Roberts finds space on the right but his cross is poor and Cerny gathers.

10’

A well timed challenge from Lindsay halts Gamboa's dangerous looking surge towards the Thistle goal.

07’

Dembele has the Celtic defence on the back foot but he over runs the ball and it goes out for a goal kick.

06’

Gordon plays a good ball down the right for Azzez to chase. Azeez, from an angle, manages a shot that Gordon pushes away before the ball is cleared.

04’

Edwards forces a Celtic defender into an error and he manages the game's first shot at goal but there is neither the power or direction to trouble Gordon

03’

Azeez threatens the Celtic defence but although he is able to find Lawless with a pass Thistle are unable to create a chance.

02’

The corner is driven towards the front post and it is met by a Celtic head but the header goes wide without Thistle troubled too much.

01’Celtic corner from the left

00’Kick-Off

Thistle get the game underway.

00’Introduction

It's a wet night in the east end of Glasgow for a game that was originally scheduled for a summer afternoon.

With Thistle in the middle of a demanding schedule of fixtures, that sees them play 3 away games in the space of 6 days, Alan Archibald has rung the changes for this the second of those three away games.

Starting this evening are David Amoo, Stevie Lawless and Ziggy Gordon as Kris Doolan, Adam Barton and Christie Elliott all drop to the bench.

There are a couple of relatively unfamiliar names in the Celtic line up but Brendan Rodgers' starting eleven is still an extremely strong one which underlines just how tough the task that faces Thistle tonight is.

Match Reaction

Celtic v Partick Thistle – 20th December 2016

With the hectic Christmas schedule giving Alan Archibald plenty of opportunities to speak to ptfc.co.uk it was his assistant, Scott Paterson, who took up the post-match media duties at Celtic Park. Although it was undoubtedly a disappointing night, there were certainly positives to take from a solid performance against the reigning Ladbrokes Premiership champions.

Scott said: “First and foremost I thought the boys were very good and did very well. We kept our shape and stuck to our game plan against a very, very strong Celtic team. We created a number of excellent chances tonight and the biggest frustration was that we couldn’t take any of them.

“Not many teams come here and make the kind of chances we did tonight so it is disappointing that we didn’t take at least one of them. Those missed chances have proved very costly tonight because we could have been walking away with a point instead of nothing.”

The only goal of the game came from a clever Celtic set piece but Scott knows his side should have done better with it, especially having conceded from a not dissimilar situation at Firhill 10 days ago.

“It is very disappointing to concede from that set piece and in that way. It was only a momentary switch off but that’s all it takes against teams like Celtic. We kept them quiet early on and did well to frustrate them. We had worked really hard up until that point so it was really frustrating to lose a goal in the manner that we did.”

The best chance of the night probably fell to an unlikely source as Ziggy Gordon found himself with space in the Celtic box but couldn’t place his shot past Craig Gordon, instead skewing it wide of the Celtic post.

“I think Ziggy will be disappointed to be honest. It’s almost as if he had too much time and the box really opened up for him. I think we were expecting the ball to hit the back of the net at that point and when it didn’t you really start to wonder if it is going to be your night.

“The good side of things is that we are still creating these chances but we have to start taking them because it is costing us and has done so on a number of occasions this season.

“We had a game plan coming into the game and the boys executed it very well. We wanted to keep the game narrow and try to force the ball wide. We created some good opportunities but, as I say, the final ball really let us down tonight.”

Despite remaining bottom of the table, Scott is adamant that the squad still has plenty of belief going into a vital run of games.

“I do think there is plenty of belief in the squad despite our league position. A couple of wins and our position will change dramatically. We now have a run of games that could allow us to do that and, if we can win against those teams that currently sit close to us in the table, things could look very different going into the New Year.”
