Greenock Morton v Partick Thistle – 1st August 2026

Partick Thistle got their 26/27 William Hill Championship campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Greenock Morton at Cappielow on Saturday.

Mark Wilson’s men came into the league opener full of confidence after securing progression from the Premier Sports Cup group stages, with a blockbuster tie against Hibernian in the Second Round a fortnight away.

Morton, however, came into the game with a lot less thunder, having failed to score at all across four League Cup group defeats.

It was the first time in 35 years that Thistle had opened their league campaign at Cappielow, having last done so with a 2-1 defeat on 10th August 1991. Despite the scoreline, that game cut the ribbon on a season that would see the Jags finally secure promotion after a decade out of the top flight.

The Jags were buoyed by the announcement on Thursday that midfielder Ben Stanway had committed to another year at Firhill following a summer of speculation. Cappielow was just too early for the 21-year-old, however, with the midfielder not included in the matchday squad.

There were four changes to the team which started against Stenhousemuir eleven days prior with the first coming in defence as Cammy Logan returned from injury at right back, replacing Matthew Falconer.

Seb Drozd and Euan Henderson were on the bench, with Aidan Fitzpatrick and Gary Mackay-Steven returning to the XI, while Tony Watt started up front at the expense of Alex Samuel.

On the bench, Ethan Ingram joined the matchday squad for the first time since making last season’s loan from Dundee a permanent signing.

Thistle were slow out the blocks, with Morton the better side in the first ten minutes, as Jags goalkeeper Liam McFarlane was called into action multiple times early on. First, he mopped up after the Jags failed to clear a corner from Callum Sandilands on six minutes before having to clear the danger with his foot, as an encroaching Michael Garrity bore down on goal minutes later.

The Jags’ first chance came on 12 minutes when Mackay-Steven somehow managed to rescue a ball off the line as it was going out for a goal kick, before firing goalwards, with Morton keeper Elyh Harrison – fresh on loan from Manchester United – on hand to save at his near post.

There was a hair-raising moment on the 21-minute mark when Ts’oanelo Lets’osa was caught in possession near the halfway line by Iain Wilson. Wilson spotted McFarlane off his line and went for a lob from miles out, but his accuracy was lacking as it flew comfortably over the bar.

Mackay-Steven came close again on 24 minutes. He cut onto his left foot and had a pop from the edge of the Morton box, aiming for the far top corner, but his effort rattled the crossbar. Five minutes after, Thistle bruised the bar once again, this time from Paddy Reading twelve yards out as the left back’s shot clipped the frame and went over.

Dan O’Reilly, deputising as captain in the absence of usual skipper Lee Ashcroft, was next to try his luck, getting his head to a Mackay-Steven corner at the back post. Unfortunately, the angle was against him and all he could do was direct the ball into the side netting.

Shortly before half-time, Iain Wilson threatened again as Garrity played him into the Thistle box on the Morton right. He tried to power a shot past Liam McFarlane at the near stick but fired wide.

Thistle suffered a setback just before half time when Cammy Logan was caught with a late challenge from Grant Gillespie. The former Hearts man was forced off meaning the re-debut of Ethan Ingram moments before the interval.

Ts’oanelo Lets’osa should have put the visitors a goal up a few minutes into the second half. Watt threaded an intelligent pass through to the midfielder as he forged a path down the flanks and jinked his way into the box. Robbie Crawford was lurking unmarked in the centre of the box, waiting for a pass, but Lets’osa decided to go it alone, with his shot missing the target.

Soon after, Morton striker Eamoon Brophy went down like a ton of bricks in the box, with the Cappielow throng howling for a penalty, but it was not to be. Instead, Brophy was shown a yellow card for simulation, much to the dismay of the home fans, with Harry Cochrane also entering the book not long later after hauling down Ingram.

On the hour, Wilson switched things up to try and make the breakthrough, with Mackay-Steven and Crawford making way for Drozd and Henderson, as Fitzpatrick moved into a central role to accommodate the wingers, giving Thistle the urgency they were looking for.

Morton were reduced to speculative efforts from range at this stage, with Wilson trying his luck from outside the box on 66 minutes, shooting well wide of McFarlane’s right-hand post.

Up the other end, the Jags were piling on the pressure. Henderson chested down a lovely long ball and dispatched it to the feet of Fitzpatrick. Fitzy drilled a delivery across the face of goal, but no Thistle players came forward to open the scoring as Laiith Fairnie hacked it clear.

After the loss of Logan earlier, Mark Wilson’s side suffered a second setback with twenty minutes to go as Logan’s replacement Ingram had to come off injured as well. Matthew Falconer, a midfielder by trade who had deputised for Logan against Livingston and Stenhousemuir, became Thistle’s third right back of the day whilst Watt also came off, as Alex Samuel tagged in.

Henderson continued to add dynamism to Thistle’s efforts, contributing to a lot of the Jags’ good play. On 76 minutes, he eked enough space out to shoot from a good position off the left, but Harrison was able to parry it away with a great stop.

Having scored the winner in the Jags’ last visit to Cappielow, Alex Samuel looked like he might repeat the feat again here when he got himself into position at the back post for a powerful cross from Smyth. He couldn’t control his header though and saw the ball fly high and wide.

With eight minutes to go, the Jags finally got a deserved goal after considerable pressure. Aidan Fitzpatrick showed searing pace as he raced away from a chasing pack of Morton players, carrying the ball from midway inside the Jags’ half to the hosts’ byline. At that point, he picked out Seb Drozd who controlled well and fired a shot goalwards which was blocked and ricocheted back to Ts’oanelo Lets’osa. The former Celtic man stayed calm and guided a left-footed shot into the back of the net to send the travelling fans behind the goal wild.

There were two opportunities for Thistle to put the seal on the tree points in the closing stages. Firstly, Aidan Fitzpatrick sliced a shot wide from an excellent Alex Samuel lay-off and then shortly thereafter Seb Drozd cut in from the left and smashed the post with a low drive which had the ‘keeper beaten all ends up.

Those missed chance proved inconsequential as Mark Wilson’s men saw the game out with relative ease and secured the club’s first opening day league win since 2022.

Saturday’s victory leaves Thistle third in the table after one game, with Ayr and Livingston both securing 2-0 wins on Saturday. Thistle return to action on Friday night, as they welcome Livingston to Firhill with the BBC Scotland cameras rolling. Kick-off is at 7:30pm.
