Match Preview

Hibernian WFC v Partick Thistle WFC – 19th April 2023

This Wednesday 19th April, PTWFC take on Hibs at Meadowbank Stadium for a 19:30 kick off.

Thistle come off the back of a 5-0 defeat against Rangers in a difficult match that ended in defeat at Petershill Park. The girls put up a fight against the Gers but suffered defeat to Malky Thomson’s side in a tough match.

A result here for Brian Graham’s side would be massive as we face a Hibs side that sit just one point above the Jags in the SWPL1.

🆚 Our Opponents: Hibernian

Hibs have had a good season, picking up 32 points so far in the league from a possible 72

Sitting in 5th position, Dean Gibson’s side will be looking to secure all three points and further the gap over Thistle as we chase their tails. Having suffered recent losses to Glasgow City and Rangers, they’ll look to grab the victory as they approach their Edinburgh derby at the weekend.

While there are no club links in terms of players, Hibs do have former PTW assistant manager Stewart Hall in their ranks. Hopefully we can upset our former assistant manager as we make the midweek trip through to Edinburgh.

The last meeting between the squads ended in a 4-0 defeat at Petershill Park in a difficult game for the Jags. It is worth noting that the last time we made the journey through to the capital to face the Hibees that the match ended in a 0-0 draw in a difficult atmosphere. Hopefully Brian Graham’s girls can handle that again and take all three points from Edinburgh’s Green and White.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle faced an uphill battle against Malky Thomson’s Rangers side from the get-go. Having had several key players missing for various reasons, including top scorer Rachel Donaldson and fan favourite Clare Docherty through suspension and goalkeeper Megan Cunningham through ineligibility, it was always going to be a difficult game.

It was a tough watch as Rangers came out with a clear game plan from the start as they played fast free flowing football and target the wide areas of the field with the tricky wingers and overlapping full backs. Rangers would attack from the start and ended the first half 3-0 up. Thistle would approach the second half in much better fashion yet still fell to a further two goals with the final score being 5-0. Brian Graham touched on this in his post-match reaction where he said that we weren’t at the races and, whilst these games are seen as a free hit, improvement was required. It will be up to the girls to improve on this performance as we face a quick turnaround and head to the capital for a game under the floodlights.

Strong followings from the Red and Yellow Army so far this season have really helped our girls. Your support has played a big part and it would be fantastic to see as many of you as possible for this midweek clash that could see the girls jump to fifth in the SWPL1.

🗞 Team News

Cheryl McCulloch remains out for this midweek clash as she recovers from her ACL injury while Rebecca McGowan also is a doubt as she continues her light training and recovers from her injury against Rangers. Clare Docherty remains suspended for this tie but it is good news as Rachel Donaldson’s  returns from suspension she served against Rangers. Megan Cunningham also returns following her ineligibility against her parent club at the weekend.

Our management squad will now be looking to find the best team available as we travel away for this fixture in the top six of the Park’s Motor Group SWPL.
