94’Full Time Report

This feels like a significant win.

It's a richly deserved one too even though Thistle found themselves behind at the break.

Within five second half minutes though that lead had been wiped out.

Firstly Lets'osa equalised before Stanway put Thistle in front.

Thistle level on points at the top with St Johnstone.

94’Full Time

Mitchell pushes away a Watt shot.

90’+01’

Bonnar shoots but it is straight at Clarke.

McArdle blocks a Watret shot. Thistle a little hemmed in as we approach the 90 minute mark.

72’

Chalmers whips in the free kick but Watt can't get the required touch to it.

71’Ayr United Booking - Ethan Walker

Ayr go down to ten men is strange, to say the least, circumstances. Walker, booked in the first half, is off the pitch and comes back on without permission and collects a second yellow. First time in nearly 50 years watching football that I've seen that happen. I say "seen" but I had to be told hat happened. More than a few in the crowd will have been similarly unaware.

71’

Turner is quickly on to the ball and is fouled and Thistle have a free kick midway inside the Ayr half on the left.

70’Thistle substitution: Kyle Turner replaces Ben Stanway

Tremendous ovation for Ben Stanway as he goes off to be replaced by Kyle Turner.

It's been really frantic since the restart but to tidy a few things up. Chalmers and Fitzpatrick have swapped sides and O'Reilly has taken the captain's armband.

53’

Lets'osa tries an ambitious first time volley from the edge of the box and slices the ball well wide.

53’Thistle corner from the left

King shoots from long range but Clarke sees it coming and gets his body behind the ball and makes an easy save.

Thistle 2 - Ayr United 1

Thistle are in front. Stanway wins the ball in the Ayr box and curls an absolute beauty beyond the reach of Mitchell.

45’Goal Thistle! Ts'oanelo Lets'osa
Thistle 1 - Ayr United 1

Well that didn't take long. Thistle are immediately on the attack. Chalmers picks up from where he left off, beats his man and he crosses from the left this time and Lets'osa applies the finish.

45’Thistle substitution: Tony Watt replaces Alex Samuel

Half-time change from Thistle.

45’Kick-Off (2nd half)
45’+04’Half Time Report

Thistle have by far the better of the first half but trail to a first half injury time goal. Thistle still regrouping after Lee Ashcroft is forced to go off injured.

45’+04’Half-Time

45’+03’

Fitzpatrick tries to bend a shot in but that's not threatening the Ayr goal.

45’+01’Goal Ayr United! Ethan Walker
Thistle 0 - Ayr United 1

As Thistle reorganise Walker gets through the middle and fires home.

45’Thistle substitution: Luke McBeth replaces Lee Ashcroft

Sure enough, Ashcroft's night is at an end.

44’

Ashcroft is down injured and is receiving treatment. A signal has gone to the bench and he might not be able to continue.

43’

A dangerous cross is drilled into the Thistle box from the right but there are no takers for it and it goes out of play on the opposite side.

39’

Chalmers' corner is well defended. Thistle pick the ball up again and this time Chalmers crosses low into the box with the ball going behind any Thistle player in the box.

39’Thistle corner from the right

38’

Fitzpatrick's corner is cleared. The ball is worked back to him and he is fouled as tries to cut into the box.

38’Ayr United Booking - Ethan Walker
37’Thistle corner from the left

37’

Holt comes through the back of Samuel. A free kick but no card for the Ayr defender.

35’

Stanway goes down inside the box and there are appeals for a penalty. Referee Scott, who isn't having the best of nights, isn't interested in those Thistle appeals.

31’

Chalmers has been sensational so far and he again is a threat down the right. He finds Lets'osa but his cross is cleared.

30’

Samuel looks to nip the ball away from Murphy to set up a Thistle counter attack  but is penalised for a foul ad instead Ayr have a free kick deep in the Thistle half.

28’

Chalmers sends over a cross from the right that Samuel and a defender go far. The ball goes wide with the decision being that it was the Thistle player that got the last touch on the ball.

26’

The corner again goes deep. Someone gets a head to it, not sure who, but the ball drops harmlessly towards Mitchell who collects.

25’Thistle corner from the right

22’

It's getting increasingly physical out there. Referee Scott is in danger of letting this game get out of his control.

19’

Stanway gets onto a loose ball inside the box but doesn't manage a shot. Good spell from Thistle.

18’

It's a packed 6 yard box that waits for Chalmers' corner. It goes deep to O'Reilly whose header drops wide of goal.

17’Thistle corner from the right

It's a fantastic first touch from Chalmers that creates space for him to cross and it takes a last ditch clearance to prevent the ball finding Samuel in front of goal.

15’

Plenty of energy from both teams but a chanceless opening 15 minutes. Ayr looks  a threat when breaking from the back.

11’Thistle Booking - Paddy Reading

08’

Thistle lose the ball inside their own half. Walker tries to find the net from a long way out and his shot is as wide of goal as he was far out.

04’

Stanway does well to win the ball inside the Ayr box but unfairly in the eyes of the referee who gives Ayr a free kick.

00’

Ayr kick the game off. Thistle as tradition dictates shooting towards the John Lambie Stand in the first half.

00’Kick-Off

00’Introduction

There is a distinct chill in the air but the action is likely to be red hot as the division's in-form sides clash at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill.

As Thistle try and get level on points with league leaders St Johnstone Head Coach Mark Wilson has made two changes to the side that started against Ross County on Saturday.

In come Alex Samuel, who starts for the first time, and Ben Stanway.

Tony Watt and Kyle Turner start this one on the bench.

Match Report

Partick Thistle v Ayr United – 21st October 2025

It may be Diwali, but the best fireworks in Glasgow were to be found on the pitch at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill on Tuesday night as Partick Thistle triumphed 2-1 over Ayr United in a Championship clash that saw sparks fly.

Both sides came into the clash in sparkling form, with Thistle unbeaten in nine league games and Ayr’s last defeat coming back in August at the hands of Mark Wilson’s Jags in the Premier Sports Cup.

Thistle made two changes to the squad which triumphed 1-0 over Ross County on Saturday, with Alex Samuel replacing Tony Watt up front, while Ben Stanway came back into the fold having missed out on Saturday, replacing Kyle Turner.

Ayr’s squad had more than their fair share of Jags alumni with goalkeeper David Mitchell and Kevin Holt making the starting XI while Anton Dowds and Firhill legend Stuart Bannigan were on the bench.

It was a cagier start to the game than the two sides’ League Cup tie in August, with little in the way of chances for either side in the opening fifteen minutes.

Ayr, in particular, found it difficult to piece moves together in the opening minutes as Thistle bore down on them in the early going.

The Honest Men’s did create an opportunity courtesy of Ethan Walker on the ninth minute after Thistle lost the ball in their own half.

Despite having time to drive forward or pick out a pass, Walker instead opted to go for goal, with his shot more likely to hit the Woodside Inn than it was the goal upon lift off.

Stanway looked primed to give Thistle the lead on nineteen minutes when he got on the end of a ball flung into the box by Chalmers, but was unable to get his shot off before Mitchell got to it.

The game became more of a dogged tussle with Ayr not afraid of a physical approach in their attempts to keep the Jags at bay.

Referee Calum Scott’s whistle was used frequently, to stop and start the game which added to the frustrations of both sets of fans.

The whistle was not used however when Ben Stanway went down in the box on 35 minutes, with Scott waving off the protestations and playing on.

The Jags continued to plug away, with corners from Fitzpatrick and Chalmers threatening the Ayr goalmouth, but failing to produce a goal.

The ferocity of the first half soon took its toll on the Jags, as Lee Ashcroft went down injured following a dangerous cross into the Thistle box, with Luke McBeth coming on for him.

Second later, before Wilson’s team had time to regroup, Ayr took the lead. Walker made up for his wayward chance earlier, racing through the middle and hitting home in stoppage time to put the visitors 1-0 up going into the break.

Half-Time – Partick Thistle 0 Ayr United 1

At half time, Wilson turned to his substitutes’ bench, with Watt replacing Samuel up front. Chalmers and Fitzpatrick switched sides, while Dan O’Reilly took the captain’s armband.

The impact was immediate as Thistle raced up the park from kick off, with Chalmers bombing down the left. The winger then effortlessly dispatched his cross into the path of TS’OANELO LETS’OSA to blast into the net and immediately restore parity.

Four minutes after, Wilson’s men took the lead, much to the delight of the Red and Yellow Army. The ball worked its way to the box, however just when it looked like Ayr had survived STANWAY picked it off Kyle Ure’s toes who sent an exquisite curling shot out of the reach of keeper Mitchell to give Thistle the advantage.

From there, the pace of the game dipped after a frantic opening ten minutes to the half. Thistle settled into a groove, content to keep Ayr at arm’s length as Scott Brown’s men huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser.

The killer blow for Ayr came in the 71st minute when Walker was given his marching orders in bizarre circumstances. The goalscorer received treatment at the side of the pitch after going down hurt, before making his way back on to the pitch without the referee’s permission.

Having been booked in the first half, Walker was shown a second yellow and sent for an early bath. The peculiar incident caught most of the crowd unawares, but not the Ayr Technical Area, who were seen to pass comment on the decision.

Down to ten men, Ayr adapted and threw themselves at the Jags in search of an equaliser, but were unable to break through, ultimately falling to defeat.

Full-Time – Partick Thistle 2 Ayr United 1

The result sees the Jags extend their undefeated league in the streak to ten games and draw level with league leaders St Johnstone at the top of the Championship table. Partick Thistle return to action on Saturday, with a trip to Kirkcaldy to face Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park
