Match Report

Partick Thistle v Greenock Morton – 1st February 2025

Partick Thistle kept on fighting against Greenock Morton at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill and a late, late Logan Chalmers goal secured a 2-2 draw.

Jags manager Kris Doolan made two changes to his starting line-up with Kanayo Megwa and Aidan Fitzpatrick starting in place of Luke McBeth and Robbie Crawford.

Ben Stanway missed out after being injured in training on Friday with the game having an electric start with Chalmers almost sneaking in behind the visiting defence before play raced to the other end and David Mitchell had to leap to smother a loose ball before 30 seconds had been played!

With four minutes played a long-range Lee Ashcroft pass looked to be sending Scott Robinson clear however the ball just eluded the striker and Ryan Mullen gathered.

Three minutes later a fine curling pass from Chalmers found Brian Graham in space on the right and the skippers’ cross looked promising until Cammy Ballantyne intervened with Harry Milne winning a fruitless corner from the visiting defender’s clearance.

Kanayo Megwa produced a strong run shortly afterwards to win a corner that was met by the head of Dan O’Reilly however Mullen was not troubled.

On 17 minutes Graham controlled a header from Morgan Boyes on the penalty spot following a free-kick that had been lofted into the box but his resulting volley was blocked.

Two minutes later Chalmers darted into the visitors’ box and crashed to the ground with Zak Delaney in close attendance with referee Chris Graham pointing to the spot.

Kyle Turner grabbed the ball however Graham opted to take responsibility from 12 yards with Mullen pulling off a fine stop from the captain’s powerfully hit shot.

Thistle came close again midway through the half when a Chalmers’ corner eluded everyone until Ballantyne stuck out a foot and diverted the ball onto his own post.

Just before the half-hour mark Stuart Bannigan slid in with a perfectly timed tackle to concede a corner that was defended well and allowed Chalmers to race forward 50 yards before being crowded out.

Ten minutes from the break there was a good old-fashioned stramash in the Thistle six-yard box as shots were fired in from close range with the home defence led by Mitchell and Ashcroft diving in to block and keep their goal intact.

Turner looked to curl his side into the lead before the break from 20 yards however his shot sailed over.

Ninety seconds from the break O’Reilly was penalised for a foul on Cameron Blues 19 yards from goal and from the resultant free-kick Nathan Shaw sent the dead ball flashing past Mitchell to put Morton one up.

Half Time – Partick Thistle 0   Greenock Morton 1

Thistle started the second half brightly with crosses from the right and then the left just out of reach for Graham.

As Doolan’s side looked to build up a head of steam Chalmers threaded an outside of the foot pass to Megwa with the full back’s charge forward halted by Morgan Boyes.

Shortly after s double change was made on 58minute Graham rose high to meet a corner with his header climbing just over the bar.

Chalmers won another flag-kick seconds later and it brought an equaliser as Robinson nodded on at front post and O’REILLY swept in a volley from 12 yards.

Equilibrium unfortunately did not last long as Morton retook the lead on 69 minutes when Shaw’s shot from a cut-back was only partially stopped by Mitchell and as the ball tricked along the line Filip Stuparevic knocked it in.

Milne fired wide as The Jags looked for a second leveller and Graham won an aerial joust with Mullen and the ball dropped to Chalmers however his first time shot went over.

Morton’s Jack Baird and Boyes were booked in quick succession as substitute Terry Ablade caused problems with his pace however the visiting defence was holding firm.

Ali Crawford then picked up a yellow as fellow replacement Steven Lawless wriggled clear only to be felled.

The pace of Ablade that had troubled Morton burst into life again in injury time as he picked picked up a Robbie Crawford pass and left defenders trailing down the right and hit the byline before picking out CHALMERS at back post who tapped home.
