Partick Thistle maintained their undefeated run in the 25/26 Premier Sports Cup on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Queen of the South on Tuesday.
Thistle came into the game at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill top of Group B on maximum points, having defeated Edinburgh City and Stranraer, while QoS had also bested City before losing narrowly to Ross County at the weekend.
There were two changes to the side that beat Stranraer a week ago. Tony Watt made his first start as a Thistle player while Ts’oanelo Lets’osa made his Jags debut after receiving his international clearance, with Stevie Lawless and Ben Stanway dropping to the bench.
It was a breathless start to proceedings, with Tony Watt going a shade wide with an effort just seconds after the opening whistle.
With three minutes on the clock, Thistle came close again. Fitzpatrick’s shot was kicked away from the goal line, with no one getting on the end of it to turn it in.
Debutant Lets’osa tried to bundle the ball into the net, but instead hit the side netting.
The assault on the Dumfries goal continued as Watt, Chalmers and Fitzpatrick in particular playing some lovely football in the early going.
Former Jags keeper Ross Stewart was playing out of his skin to keep the Doonhamers from going 1-0 down, most notably making two last ditch saves to stop Watt from opening the scoring from close-range on 15 minutes.
The striker stretching in vain to flick in a volley that Stewart stuck out a hand to save before being denied after springing to his feet to try again.
Thistle continued to pile forward with chance after chance to no avail as Logan Chalmers somehow rattled the post after beating Stewart.
Mark Wilson’s side finally made the breakthrough on 31 minutes as Aidan Fitzpatrick fired a free kick from the edge of the box through the wall and into the net, much to the relief of the fans at Firhill.
With the seal broken, Thistle then doubled their lead two minutes later. A defensive error allowed Fitzpatrick to race through on goal, before rounding Stewart.
With a defender scrambling back to stop the ball from going in, Fitzpatrick then took the selfless option, passing across to Lets’osa to fire in from six yards and join the goalscoring debutant club.
The Jags went down the tunnel 2-0 up, but would have been frustrated not to be leading by more. If it wasn’t for the heroics of Stewart, Thistle could’ve been 5 or 6 to the good at half time.
Half Time – Partick Thistle 2 Queen of the South 0
It looked like the Jags might increase their lead on 49 minutes after Chalmers left visiting defender Taylor Charters in his wake and launched a cross goalwards. Fitzpatrick did his best to try and get himself onto the ball, but was unable to smash it home as it flashed away from danger.
Lewis Budinauckas was roused into action on 64 minutes, forced into his first save of the game. A Reece Lyon shot from the outside of the box barely threatened the order of play, as Budinauckas mopped it up with ease.
From there, the game petered out as Queen of the South struggled to trouble the Thistle box. Despite the Jags’ best efforts, Ross Stewart managed to keep the score down, as Thistle ran out 2-0 winners.

After an excellent first half display Thistle ease their way to a 2-0 victory in the second half.
The win means that Thistle will finish at least 2nd in Group B which may be enough to secure a berth in the knock out stages. A point on Saturday at Ross County, big winners tonight over Edinburgh City, would ensure a 1st place finish and a confirmed spot in the knock out stages.
Budinauckas clutches a cross at his front post.
Into added time at the end of the 90 minutes.
No threat to the Thistle as Queen of the South work a short corner routine.

Thistle deal with the free kick and Lets'osa is back on.
Before the free kick can be taken Lets'osa needs some treatment and is limping as he goes off to the sidelines.
There's no free kick for what looks an obvious foul on Lets'osa. Queen of the South break and win a free kick at the left hand corner of the Thistle box.
Chalmers leaves Charters for dead and sends over a cross from the right that Fitzpatrick can only be inches away from connecting with in front of goal.
Back underway. Thistle unchanged at the break.
Thistle lead by two at the break but in truth were it five or six Queen of the South could have had few complaints.
Into added time at the end of the first half.
Watt manages to get the ball to Fitzpatrick to his right. Fitzpatrick drills in a low cross that Chalmers just fails to get on the end of.
It's a decent free kick aimed into a dangerous area. The only touch comes from a Queen of the South player but it is the slightest of touches and doesn't threaten the Thistle goal.
Queen of the South have a free kick wide on the right and a chance to test the Thistle defence as they load the box.
It's two in two minutes from Thistle. It's a error in defence from Queen of the South. Fitzpatrick is only the ball in a flash, takes it round Stewart and with a defender trying to protect the goal Fitzpatrick takes the unselfish option of passing to Lets'osa who marks his Thistle debut with a goal.
The only surprise about this goal is that it has taken Thistle 31 minutes to score it. Fitzpatrick takes the free kick and fires it through the wall and into the net.
Thistle have a free kick just a yard or so outside the Queen of the South box.
Chalmers has another effort on goal. This time it is a routine save for Stewart.
How are Thistle not in front? Lets'osa finds Chalmers. His shot beats Stewart but thumps off the inside of the post and stays out.
Lets'osa has a shot from the edge of the box but he's a little off balance and as a result the ball drifts well wide of goal.
The Chalmers corner goes deep to O'Reilly. He heads on but Ashcroft can't find the telling touch near goal and the ball is cleared.
No goals inside the first 15 minutes but it has been an impressive start from Thistle all the same.
Stewart twice inside the space of a few seconds makes last gasp saves to deny Watt a goal.
There some delightful football from Watt, Chalmers and Crawford but somehow the ball stays out of the Queen of the South net.
It's a good corner from Kennedy but Thistle clear. The ball is lifted back into the Thistle box though and a header is flicked wide of Budinauckas' right hand post.
Douglas heads clear the Fitzpatrick free kick.
Thistle win a free kick wide on the left and have a chance to get bodies into the box.
Thistle are close again as Fitzpatrick's shot just fails to find the net with Lets'osa nearly marking his debut with a goal as he hits the side netting as Thistle try and force the loose ball home.
And are nearly scoring as Watt flashes a shot just wide.
Thistle get the game underway and are shooting towards the John Lambie Stand in the first half.
Thistle protect their 100% Premier Sports Cup record this evening with the visit to the Wyre Stadium at Firhill of League One Queen of the South.
A Thistle victory tonight would guarantee that they could finish no lower second in Group B which while not ensuring Thistle's qualification to the knock out would stages of the competition would mean that a point in Dingwall on Saturday would be sufficient.
In search of a third straight win Head Coach Mark Wilson has made two changes to the side that starts tonight's match.
Tony Watt comes in to make his first start as a Thistle player while Ts'oanelo Lets'osa makes his Jags debut.
Queen of the South, who still have hopes of making the knock-out stages themselves, meantime include former Thistle players Ross Stewart and Liam Smith in their starting eleven.
