Match Preview

Partick Thistle v Raith Rovers – 14th February 2020

Thistle take on Raith Rovers in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup tomorrow evening with a slot in the final at stake for both sides. Thistle manager Ian McCall spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of what could be a big night for the club.

“It’s an opportunity to get to a national cup final and that doesn’t come along too often. Our club hasn’t won it before and I think Alan Archibald’s team got to a final one year. We’ve reached a couple of semi finals before and when you get to this stage of the competition it’s great. When you get to the semis and the final, you want to go on and win it.

“If we get to the final we’ll probably take 5 or 6 thousand fans to the game and it will give everyone at the club a boost. It’ll be the same for Raith though, they’ll know what it presents. They will be as determined as us to reach the final so we know it’ll be a hard game.”

The gaffer knows that Raith will present a formidable task with the Fife club flying high in League One.

“I know it is different leagues but there is only one place between us if you look at it that way. I’ve got a lot of respect for John McGlynn and what he is doing at Raith. They will be very well organised so it won’t be easy. They’ve got two very experienced strikers who have done a lot in the game so it will be a very tough game.”

With home advantage in the tie, Ian is looking for Thistle to take the initiative in the tie.

“In our last home game against Ayr United we did well and probably should have won the game. We’re at home and the onus is on us to go and win it but Raith will be full of confidence with the league campaign that they have had.”

The manager is under no illusions the influence an appearance in a Cup Final can bring to the entire club.

“If we can get to the final it’ll give everyone at the club a lift, most importantly the supporters. They’ve had a tough couple of years and it would be a day for them to look forward to. We’ve got a big task ahead of us and we hope to use that as a catalyst but it will definitely be a tough game.”

Finally the gaffer updated us with team news.

“We’ve got a few of the new players that are cup tied and we’re still waiting for Zak Rudden to get fit. There will be three or four boys that we hope will go on to be regulars missing so it gives others a chance.”

More exclusive preview interviews with Scott Fox and Thistle assistant manager, Neil Scally, are now available to JagZone subscribers – log in to view.

75’Raith Rovers substitution: Tony Dingwall replaces John Baird
74’Raith Rovers substitution: Daniel Armstrong replaces Kieron Bowie
73’Goal Raith Rovers! Regan Hendry
Thistle 0 - Raith Rovers 2

You can't keep handing teams gilt edged opportunities and hope not to be punished and Thistle are finally, and deservedly, punished when Hendry shoots past a motionless Fox.

70’

Boos ring out from the home fans as Raith miss a simple chance to double their advantage and surely book a place in the Final. Matthews has a free header no more than 8 yards out and can do no more than hit the top of the bar.

69’Thistle substitution: Mitch Austin replaces Reece Cole

68’

Raith miss a glorious chance to extend their lead. Spencer plays a ball through for Bowie who has time and space inside the Thistle box but shoots high and wide.

67’

Thomson stretches out a arm to push away a Gordon header.

66’Thistle Booking - Reece Cole
62’Raith Rovers substitution: Brad Spencer replaces Dylan Tait

And Rovers are again close and Fox again saves this time from Baird.

Raith are close to extending their lead and it takes a good stop from Fox to deny Hendry.

58’Thistle substitution: Lewis Mansell replaces Alex Jones

55’

Bowie is able get into space in behind the Thistle defence after a player dives into a challenge at the half way line. Bowie advances as far as the edge of the Thistle box but his shot clears the bar.

46’

Thistle start the half on the front foot but Thomson eases some early pressure on his goal when he claims a Cardle cross.

45’Kick-Off (2nd half)
45’+01’Half Time Report

It's been an open, entertaining first half with the difference between the two teams Thistle's inability to defend set pieces.

45’Half-Time

45’

Minimum of 1 minute additional time to be played.

43’

Bannigan floats the free kick into the box. It's Saunders that gets there but he can't shape his body to direct the ball goalwards.

42’

Thistle have a free kick deep inside the Rovers half over near the right corner of the penalty box.

40’

Graham advances into the Rovers box but can do not better than to smack a shot off a retreating defender.

36’

Graham plays the ball to the feet of Jones at the edge of the box. Jones is able to turn but can't keep his shot down and Raith have a goal kick.

35’

Cole swings the corner over. O'Ware powers forward to reach it but his header is wide.

34’Thistle corner from the left

Cardle plays the ball through to Penrice whose shot is saved.

33’

Raith have their tails up at the moment and Baird finds space about 25 yards out but can only lift his shot over the Thistle crossbar.

30’Goal Raith Rovers! Kyle Benedictus
Thistle 0 - Raith Rovers 1

It's a good inswinging corner from Tait but negligent defending from Thistle that allows Benedictus to find the net with a header from 6 yards out. Yet another cheap goal conceded.

29’Raith Rovers corner from the left

26’

Cardle plays the ball up to the feet of Jones at the edge of the box but Jones isn't strong enough and a defender is able to brush him away from the ball.

24’

Another opening for Thistle this time coming the way of Cardle. His shot though is very poor and doesn't threaten the Rovers goal.

23’

Thistle are close to a goal. Cole picks up an excellent forward pass and in turn feeds the ball through to Jones. Jones hangs a cross to Graham at the back post and it takes a good block by a defender to prevent Graham from hitting the target.

21’

Graham has the ball in the net for Thistle but he is clearly offside when he collects Jones' effort at goal after he had been set up by Cardle.

15’

Cardle weaves his way across the edge of the Raith box before he eventually loses the ball.

13’Thistle Booking - Stuart Bannigan

It's getting very heated and Bannigan is next to collect a yellow card for a late challenge. A bit of revenge over the 'red card' incident from moments earlier perhaps?

11’Raith Rovers Booking - Ross Matthews

Matthews is very late on Penrice and a red card is initially flashed in his direction. Referee Newlands though appears to have pulled out the wrong card and quickly produces a yellow instead.

09’

Cardle slips a pass to Cole to his right. Cole shoots for goal from about 6 yards outside the Raith box. His shot is on target but it is an easy save for Thomson.

06’

There are boos from the away fans when Cardle collects the ball. Those boos turn to jeers as he over hits his pass to Penrice to his left but another hint of something promising from Thistle.

05’

Thistle break with a bit of pace but any progress towards the Raith goal is halted when Cole is penalised for a foul near the corner of the penalty box. First encouraging sign from The Jags all the same.

00’

There is a noisy away support in and they almost have something to cheer inside the first minute. Bowie wins the ball in midfield and advances towards goal but his shot is a poor one and goes wide.

00’

Raith Rovers kick the game off. Thistle are shooting towards the City End in the first half.

00’Kick-Off

00’Introduction

A Cup Final slot is up for grabs for both sides at Firhill this evening.

Injuries combined with a number of players being cup tied in this season's competition has restricted the options open to Ian McCall and his side shows a number of changes from the side that went don to defeat Dundee last weekend.

Into the side come Alex Jones, Shea Gordon and Steven Saunders.

Remember this game is played to a finish tonight with extra-time and penalties if required.

Match Reaction

Partick Thistle v Raith Rovers – 14th February 2020

Thistle saw the opportunity of a place in the final of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup pass them by this evening as League One side Raith Rovers took a thoroughly merited place in the showpiece final. The Jags fell two goals behind as Kyle Benedictus headed home from a corner with Regan Hendry adding a second after a number of good chances had been missed by the Fifers. Thistle grabbed a goal back but weren’t able to grab the second to force extra time. Ptfc.co.uk spoke to an under the weather, Ian McCall shortly after full time.

“I thought we played well in the first half and we should have scored with a couple of the opportunities we had. They had a set play and scored from it and I felt it was a bit of a travesty that we were getting beat at half time. We changed in the second half and went a bit gung ho, which left us a lot more exposed at the back. Raith had a couple of opportunities before they got a thoroughly merited second goal. We got a goal from Mansell but it was too little too late.”

For the second game in a row, Thistle conceded from a corner and the Jags gaffer was exasperated about his side not learning from set pieces.

“We’ve worked very hard on them this week as we know it is something that opponents have identified as a weakness in us. We brought everyone back to defend them but you’ve got to do your job and we didn’t do that.”

With the cup campaign over, the focus turns to 12 very big Ladbrokes Championship matches, starting next week with the visit of Dunfermline to the Energy Check Stadium at Firhill.

“We’re devasted because we had the chance to give the supporters the opportunity to go and enjoy a cup final and have a good day that they’d hopefully remember for a while. That’s gone now, we’ve got 12 defining games to go in the Ladbrokes Championship. We’ve got to go and win some games to stay in the league.”

Further reaction to today’s game from Alan Archibald and Lewis Mansell will be available to JagZone subscribers this evening – log in to view.
