Partick Thistle ground out a 1-0 win over Ross County today at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill, moving themselves to three points off the top in the William Hill Scottish Championship.
Thistle made two changes to the side that grabbed a last-minute equaliser at Cappielow, with Ben Stanway replaced by Ts’oanelo Lets’osa and Cammy Logan moved to the bench to be replaced by Ben McPherson, who returned from international duty.
Robbie Crawford remained out with a muscle injury with Dan MacKay not yet ready to return.
County fluffed their lines on an early corner, giving possession straight back after a slip when the dead ball was taken.
It was, however an energetic start from both sides, but one lacking in finesse, with the slippery surface making it difficult to get going.
Josh Clarke was called into service twice in the ninth minute. First, Lee Ashcroft attempted to head clear, only for the ball to land in the lap of Scott Fraser. Fraser’s effort from outside the area was limp, with Clarke making the save with ease.
Seconds later, a throw out from Clarke unfortunately found its way to Roman Hale, now through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Clarke acquitted himself though, making a good stop to ensure the game remained goalless.
It was a forgettable return to Firhill for former Jag Ross Docherty, who went down with an injury on 18 minutes. The 20/21 League 1 title winning captain would receive medical treatment, before being replaced by Dean Cornelius.
Kyle Turner had an effort on 20 minutes after Watt held the ball up and set him up for an attempt on goal. Turner’s shot was too high, sailing over the bar.
Moments later, Hale was one-on-one with Clarke again, but the Thistle keeper once again was the equal of him, as it remained scoreless.
The remainder of the half saw both sides show a lot of industry, but not much guile. County had a chance two minutes before half time when Hale had a dig on the turn from the edge of the box, but his effort flew inches wide.
Half-Time – Partick Thistle 0 Ross County 0
With County having the better of the chances in the first half, Head Coach Wilson decided to switch things up at half time, with Stevie Lawless coming on in place of Aidan Fitzpatrick, as Chalmers switched over to the left wing.
The gamble soon paid off, as Thistle finally broke the deadlock on 57 minutes. It started when Lawless picked up the ball inside the box before passing the ball to Lets’osa.
The midfielder raced up the park, playing the ball to Oisin Smyth near the half-way line. From there, Smyth and Chalmers played a sumptuous one-two which ended with SMYTH blasting the ball home with an unstoppable volley to put the Jags into the lead.
With the wind in their sails and Firhill back in full voice at 1-0. Alex Samuel came on for Tony Watt, who received a round of applause for his considerable efforts before leaving.
Thistle had a swagger about them as they went in search of a second, but were unable to break through.
The game got nervier in the final fifteen minutes as County turned up the heat, getting increasingly desperate. Thistle dropped back, with Luke McBeth coming on to add an extra line of defence, as the Jags battened down the hatches. The likes of Samuel, Chalmers and Ben Stanway offered respite, putting in the yards up the park to run down the clock and stifle County’s flow.
As we ticked over past regulation time, the Dingwall side continued to pose a threat, but Thistle’s back line stood firm. Ben Stanway had a chance to put it beyond doubt at the death, one-on-one with the keeper after a pass from Alex Samueal, but much like Hale, his chance was saved by the keeper.
In the end, Thistle prevailed by a single goal.
Full-Time – Partick Thistle 1 Ross County 0
Today’s win saw the Jags climb to within three points of league leaders St. Johnstone, who suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Arbroath, with a game in hand. Thistle return to action on Tuesday, back at Firhill, with a chance to go joint top against Ayr United.

Oisin Smyth first Thistle goal is enough for Thistle to record a narrow win, their fourth in a row against Ross County.
A victory that takes Thistle to within 3 points of St Johnstone at the top of the league with a game in hand.
That game in hand is here at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill against the league's other form team, Ayr United.
We'll see you on Tuesday.
Samuel rolls the ball to Stanway who is denied by the body of Carson.
Ball goes out for a Thistle goal kick.
Clarke grabs the ball preventing it from rolling over the line for a corner.
Into added time at the end of the 90 minutes. Would expect about 4.
Man of the Match: Logan Chalmers.
Pressure mounting but Thistle win a free kick at the edge of their own box.
Crowd: 3,182
In terms of chances there isn't much happening but it is tense and nervy as we move deep into the final 10 minutes of the 90.
The referee spots a foul as Thistle try and clear the corner and it is a Jags free kick.
Chalmers swings in the corner but Carson claims underneath his crossbar.
Watt is furious that it isn't a red card that comes out.
Thistle in front and it's an absolute peach. Thistle spread the ball across the full width of the pitch. Chalmers collects on the left and sends over a magnificent cross that Smyth fires into the corner of the net for his first Partick Thistle goal.
Half-time change from Thistle. Chalmers has switched to the left hand side.
The first half ends goalless.
The better chances have undoubtedly come the way of Ross County and Ronan Hale specifically.
Twice the County number nine was left with just Josh Clarke to beat and twice he was denied by the Thistle keeper.
He was also inches off target with a shot on the turn at the edge of the box.
Kyle Turner has had a couple of tries for Thistle and Tony Watt drew a save from Carson.
All to play for in the second half.
Into added time.
Hale is inches away from hitting target with a shot on the turn at the edge of the Thistle box.
Thistle break through Fitzpatrick. He finds Watt but his first touch is heavy. He managed to find Chalmers with a pass and he tries to curl an effort into the net. On this occasion he can't get the curl on his shot and drifts wide for a goal kick.
O'Reilly tries to keep things alive after Ashroft's touch take the corner away from goal. His cross hits a defender and rebounds off him and out for a goal kick.
Watt shoots from the edge of the box after receiving a Turner pass but his effort is straight at Carson.
Hale again is left with just Clarke to beat and again he is denied by the Thistle keeper.
Watt does well to hold the ball up before laying it back to Turner. Turner's shot though is too high and doesn't threaten the County goal.
Carson makes an easy catch from Chalmers' corner.
A Turner shot is deflected wide of goal for a Thistle corner.
Little over 15 minutes played and a third County player goes down needing treatment. Docherty this time.
Ashcroft gets his head to the ball to clear Henderson's corner.
O'Reilly tries to attack the Chalmers corner but it is well defended by Iacovitti who goes down injured prompting the referee to stop play.
It's a gilt edged chance for Hale who finds himself with only Clarke to beat. It's a really tame effort from the County striker though and Clarke saves. A let off for Thistle.
Ahcroft's headed clearance goes only as far as Fraser who shoots from outside the box. There's no real power in the shot though and Clarke saves with comfort.
There has been a crispness to the play and a high tempo from both sides in the opening minutes but no real chances yet.
County make a mess of the game's first corner.
Head Coach Mark Wilson has made two changes to his starting eleven for this afternoon's visit of Ross County.
Ben McPherson, back from international duty with Scotland Under 21s, comes back into the side with Cammy Logan dropping to then bench.
Ts'oanelo Lets'osa on the bench against Morton starts this one replacing Ben Stanway.
