It takes a late penalty from Brian Graham to secure a 2-1 win but that win is enough to see Thistle progress from Group B of the Viaplay Cup and into the knock out stages of the competition.
Graham absolutely thumps the penalty past Carswell to restore the Thistle lead.
Adeloye's shot strikes a hand and Thistle have a penalty.
Williams is able to head Lyon's corner towards goal but the ball is cleared.
Milne's cross nearly deceives Carswell.
Milne finds Alston. Not sure if Alston is crossing or shooting for goal but the ball drifts well wide of goal in any case.
With Falkirk leading 4-1 against Peterhead they will top this group unless there is a winner inside 90 minutes here at Firhill.
It's poor from Thistle as Henderson has time inside the box to pick his spot and the game is tied.
The game breaks out its slumber and a Tapping cross is headed over by Whyte.
This is about as lowkey as it gets.
Lawless is able to play the ball to the feet of Graham inside the box. He gets away from Waugh but Carswell is able to save his low shot.
Thistle deal comfortably enough with the corner but Williamson's clearance is picked up outside the box and Thistle are forced into a bit of defending.
The deadlock is broken. A cross a comes in from the right and Lyon's flick beats Carswell and goes in off the inside of the post.
Williams is able to get his head to the corner but Carswell collects with ease.
It's level at the break.
Thistle have dominated possession without creating any chances of note.
The game's best, only, chance came the way of Spartans and would have produced a goal but for a great block from Milne.
Better required from Thistle second half.
A Craigen shot is blocked by the out stretched leg of Muirhead.
The corner drifts out of play at the back post.
Better corner this time but Graham can't get his head to it.
Lawless and Fitzpatrick work a short corner but the delivery is poor. Muirhead does well to win the ball back giving Thistle a second chance and Carswell has to collect a Williams header at his back post.
Spartans should be in front. Dishington's shot comes off the bar and falls straight to Craigen who looks set to score, and would have scored but for a great block from Milne.
The Lawless free kick is cleared and Thistle are forced back towards their own goal.
Lawless is fouled wide on the right and Thistle have a free kick. Lawless himself will take it.
Lyon s able to get on the end of a Williamson knock down and goes to ground under a challenge. Appeals for a penalty though fall on deaf ears.
Fitzpatrick's corner is cleared.
Armstrong gets away from Milne but his cut back is cleared by Williams.
Mitchell again elects to punch and that is enough to get Denholm's corner away from goal.
MacKenzie is getting forward much more than he did against Falkirk and he sends over a cross from the right that is a shade too high for both Graham and Milne.
It's ironic, given Thistle's domination, that a swift counter attack nearly leads to an opening. Graham squares to Williamson who really should do better after collecting the ball inside the Spartans box.
Mitchell gets a strong hand to Armstrong's corner.
Graham leaves the free kick to Lawless who hits the wall with a tame effort.
Wiliamson is fouled near the edge of the box and Thistle have a free kick.
Spartans break and suddenly Thistle are under a bit of pressure. Craigen finds Dishgton who is initially held up by Williams. He then gets the break of the ball but doesn't manage to get a shot at goal.
Graham and MacKenzie link up well but MacKenzie's low cross is cleared.
Spartans are getting every man behind the ball. There's going to be a degree of patience from Thistle this afternoon but there are encouraging signs.
Good play from Lyon in and around the Spartans box but Thistle can't find an opening.
Poor corner from Fitzpatrick and the ball is headed clear.
Thistle are starting to build up some pressure. Lawless looks to be fouled near the edge of the Spartans box but there is no free kick.
Spartans kick the game off.
The Viaplay Cup Group B equation is an easy one to solve this afternoon.
Victory for either side inside the 90 minutes will see them top the group and progress to the next round.
It gets a little more complicated if it finishes level and heads to yet another penalty shoot out. In that scenario the penalty shoot out winners will need Falkirk to not win their match with Peterhead inside 90 minutes for them to top the group.
We'll return to that later should we need too!
As heavy rain starts to fall on the immaculate Firhill surface Kris Doolan's team selection shows just one change from last Saturday's match with Falkirk.
Into the starting eleven comes James Lyon for his first sever starting appearance with Ben Stanway dropping to the bench,
New signings Blair Alston and Tomi Adeloye start the afternoon on the bench.
