🆚 Our Opponents: Dundee Utd

Dundee United have had a mixed season thus far. They currently occupy 9th place with 10 points, gaining key victories over Aberdeen and Spartans whilst also facing heavy defeats, including a 7-0 defeat in their last fixture against Hibernian.

Having already suffered a large 4-0 loss against a Jags side down to 10 in August, a day that featured a Cara Henderson Hattrick, manager Graeme Hart will be looking to use that match at Peasy as motivation to get a better result here.

Last season saw some history at Gussie Park as Thistle secured their top six status with a win away to Dundee United with our Magic Cara Hendo scoring against the tangerines in that fixture. A monumental occasion, Brian Graham will certainly be reminding his players of that day to boost the morale.

📈Thistle so far

A 3-1 victory in Aberdeen on Thursday evening was a statement of intent by the Jags. Having had several players unavailable due to work commitments, including recent POTM winner Leah Robinson, Ava Easdon and Rachel Donaldson, Thistle didn’t let that hold them back.

A cold, wet, windy and misty evening in Aberdeen, the hosts took the lead early as Bailey Hutchison “does what Bailey Hutchison does best” in the words of Brian Graham. This only seemed to light the fire in Thistle however as Rosie Slater scored her first goal in black and yellow, and a goal of the season candidate at that. The Jags would continue to score against the Dons with Linzi Taylor and Rosie McQuillan scoring to ensure victory for Thistle.

Brian Graham would speak after the game of how proud he was of his girls, especially with all of the adversity against them heading into the match. The word “belief” is one that our gaffer gets teased about. However, it’s that word that was used over and over again and got the result we wanted on Thursday. Attention quickly shifts over to Dundee United however, as another away day comes along.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army have really helped our girls this season. We certainly enjoyed our trip to Gussie Park last season and we’d hope to see as many of you again this time around.

🗞 Team News

We are pleased to be able to welcome most of the players back from their absences for this match on Sunday.

Leah Robinson, Rachel Donaldson and Ava Easdon are all contenders to be included in the starting lineup as our management team will look to name a competitive squad to take on this Dundee United team

Match Report

Dundee Utd WFC v Partick Thistle WFC – 19th November 2023

A hugely successful seven day period for Partick Thistle WFC was rounded off with a narrow, but comfortable, 1-0 win over Dundee United at Foundation Park.

Manager Brian Graham made a number of changes from the side that had won at Aberdeen just three days earlier. Rachel Donaldson had missed the game through work commitments and she went straight back into the side. Ava Easdon started in goal as Graham continues to make us to the two excellent goalkeepers at his disposal and there was also a start for Amy Bulloch.

Thistle looked in determined mood right from the offset. In their first serious attack on the United goal Rosie Slater, who had scored in such spectacular fashion at Aberdeen, saw her effort from the edge of the box after a partially cleared corner go wide of goal.

Such was Thistle’s dominance that there was little surprise when they took a 19th minute lead. Or that Rachel Donaldson’s goal was another candidate for own personal highlight reel of spectacular goals. Donaldson’s turned her marker before sending a left foot shot into the top left hand corner of the net.

At the time that goal merely looked like the prelude to further Thistle goals. The performance in the first half especially merited further goals with all that was missing a cutting edge in front of goal.

Slater again came close with a low drive that was well held by McNicoll in the United goal while top scorer Cara Henderson saw her shot from a tight angle hit the side netting.

The second half was a more even affair although Thistle remained in control and never truly looked like relinquishing their one goal lead. Only once was Ava Easdon seriously tested when she made an excellent stop to prevent United’s half-time substitute Robb from finding the net.

With Thistle having a grip of midfield play continued to be played mostly in the direction of the United goal.

Emma Lawton lifted a shot over the crossbar and Jenna Ferguson had a header saved as Thistle looked to score the second goal that would have removed any doubt over the destination of the points. The closest they came to that second goal was a Donaldson shot that fizzed just narrowly wide of target.
