MATCH REACTION
Thistle reached the midway point in the league season with a home game against title contenders Glasgow City and while there were a number of positives to take from yet another incredibly hardworking Thistle display, there was the disappointment of a further defeat against one of the league’s top sides.
It was an afternoon in which Lauren McGregor in the Thistle goal demonstrated her undoubted class between the sticks as she was called into action as early as the 5th minute when she saved a long range Farrelly effort.
That save was a fairly routine one but her save to deny Kats, McGregor making a great stop low to her right, was straight out of the top drawer.
While the dominant direction of the game was towards the Thistle goal, a well organised and disciplined Thistle side were able to restrict the number of clear cut opportunities that Glasgow City had.
The Thistle defensive resistance, however, was broken after 27 minutes when City scored a contentious opener.
Thistle felt that a foul had been committed in the lead up to City winning a corner and it was from Lauder’s corner that followed that Clark was able to head home.
McGregor was beaten again after 37 minutes but this time Murphy was well placed to clear Davidson’s effort off the line.
With half-time four minutes away Glasgow City spurned an excellent opportunity when Clark headed wide after her late run had allowed he to evade her marker at a corner.
The second half followed a similar pattern to that of the first but while the score remained at just 1-0 there was always a chance that Thistle could sneak an equaliser and the best chance of that came Docherty’s way after 63 minutes but her shot drifted wide of goal.
At the other end, McGowan became the next Thistle player to clear off the line and McGregor made another excellent stop to this time deny Colvill.
There were just five minutes of the game remaining when Glasgow City scored the goal that clinched the points and there was a touch of good fortune surrounding this one. Colvill rather scuffing her shot but getting enough on the ball to get it past McGregor and into the net via the inside of the Thistle post.
Although that completed the scoring for the afternoon there was still time for McGregor to make another impressive save, this time denying Colvill at point blank range.
