The Jags took on the champions in their first home game of the season.
A solid first-half defensive display from Thistle kept the game level, with nothing to split the two sides until just before half-time.
Just as it looked like Thistle would head in to the break level, Hibs broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime. Rosie Livingstone’s cross into the box found Tiree Burchill at the back post. It was to get worse for the Jags as Hibs extended their lead before the break when Burchill grabbed her second of the match.
In the second half, despite a bright start to the second half, the away side took control, adding three more goals. Ex-Jag Caley Gibb added a third before a later double from Eilidh Adams saw Hibs run out 5-0 winners, a scoreline which was harsh on Thistle.
Thistle manager David Elliot spoke with the media after Friday’s match, labelling the defeat as a “disappointment”
“Disappointment is the big word I would use. I don’t think the girls deserved to lose five because they put in so much effort”
So, I’m really disappointed, I cannot fault their work rate, but I just think decision making in and around the final third wasn’t the best for us tonight. But we will learn, pick ourselves up, and move on.”
It was a tough one to swallow for the players and fans, as four out of five of the away side’s goals came in added time at the end of both halves.. Elliot praised Hibs for their ruthlessness and commented on what they could have done better.
“That is why they are champions (Hibernian). They’re clinical. We could have managed the game a little bit better around them, especially when we’ve lost one; we don’t want to lose another quickly thereafter. Same again in the second half.
So, it’s small things like that we probably need to learn and get better at”
Despite the heavy scoreline, it is clear to see there is potential in the squad, particularly when the Jags are in control of possession. Elliot added to this by commenting on the pass and move sequences seen throughout Friday’s match
“There were Load of positives to take, a lot of good pass and moves, I’d like to have more of that in the final third, we never really got in the final third as much as I’d like. Then, a couple of times we did, the quality wasn’t quite there.
Things we’ve worked on in training have improved in a short period of time, and we will keep working.”
Looking ahead, Partick Thistle are aiming to bounce back from this defeat, as they welcome Celtic to Petershill next Sunday.
Kick-off is 1pm
