Partick Thistle fell to a defeat at the hands of league leaders Rangers on Sunday afternoon at Petershill Park.
There was one change to the Jags’ starting lineup from last week, as Rachel Donaldson replaced Jenna Ferguson.
Thistle took a deserved lead after 14 minutes, a through ball from Hannah Robinson found Rachel Donaldson one-on-one with Ranger’s goalkeeper Jenna Fife. Donaldson produced a lovely finish firing past the Rangers’ number one to put the Jags ahead.
Thistle continued their excellent first-half display, looking more threatening going forward. Donaldson’s almost grabbed her second with a great effort that rattled the Rangers crossbar, Thistle created several promising attacks but were unable to add to their lead before halftime.
The Jags went into halftime with a well-deserved one-goal lead against the visitors.
As the second half began, neither side made changes, and Rangers sought to overturn the deficit.
McCallister’s effort forced Fife into another save, while Thistle defended well as Rangers increased the pressure.
After keeping hold of their lead well, just after the hour mark Rangers found a breakthrough with Katie Wilkinson’s strike, following a super Jeni Currie save.
The visitors quickly followed up with another goal to take the lead. A passing move saw Laura Berry claim the second from inside the box.
Rangers added 2 more to the scoresheet to see out the match 4-1 as tireness kicked in for Thistle against the full-time opposition.
It was a Thistle display which delivered a spirited performance, displaying hard work and determination, and will feel aggrieved by the result.
Manager David Elliot faced the media in the aftermath of Sunday’s result.
Reflecting on the match, Elliot shared his thoughts on the defeat to Rangers.
“Disappointed overall. 90 minutes of really, really good hard work and 45 minutes of really good quality. We knew Rangers would come here and have possession, and we knew we would have to defend well; we did.
“We hoped to get a few chances; when we got the chances, we did. We got three really good chances, and we took one of them. Rattled the crossbar with one of them, and the other got caught under Hannah’s feet a little bit.
“At halftime, I was really comfortable with where we were. I knew they’d come out second half ready to go. We didn’t start the second half particularly great.
“I think when you are playing against a full-time team like that, they will have quality from the bench. It is really, really hard to deal with that.
“That scoreline wasn’t a reflection of the game for me, but we will take it on the chin and move on.”
Thistle look to build on their performance with an away trip to Motherwell next week. A crucial game for both sides.
