🆚 Our Opponents: Rangers

Rangers have had a great season so far as they sit 2nd in the table with 66 points, 2 off bitter rivals Celtic in top position. Jo Potter will be wanting a quick turnaround having suffered a shock defeat against Hearts during the week that allowed Celtic to leapfrog them into top spot.

We know exactly the type of talent that Rangers possess. They recently beat us in the Sky Sports League Cup final at Tynecastle 4-1 in a game that proved why they are one of the best in the country. The likes of Rio Hardy, Brogan Hay and Mia McAuley are all likely to make an impact while Tessel Middag and Nicola Docherty will make our attacking threats difficult.

It will be a difficult match but one that our girls are excited to get into as we face yet another Glasgow Derby.

📈Thistle so far

We made the “away” trip to Petershill for a match against Glasgow City. We knew the talent they had, and knew they’d be wanting to put in a much better display than the one they showed against Rangers at the weekend.

The Jags were the team to get things underway, tightly marking City’s players and nullifying them early on. A great long ball up from Emma Lawton saw Carla Boyce latch onto the end and an audacious long shot over Lee Gibson saw Thistle go 1-0 up. A great start to the match, our girls seemed fired up. However, Leanne Ross wasn’t going to let her side go down that easily. Just a few minutes later, a well worked corner routine saw city equalise as Irish international Emily Whelan head the ball into the back of the net putting the game at one a piece.

City would turn up the pressure some more as a second goal not long afterwards from Wilma Forsblom got last season’s Champions in the lead. Whelan would grab her second goal of the match after slotting the ball past Cunningham, giving the Jags an uphill battle heading into the second half.

A few halftime substitutions in the form of Clare Docherty and Rebecca McAllister gave us more rhythm as it slowed down Glasgow City’s game and allowed the Jags to come back into it. Aimee Anderson, Imogen Longcake and Rosie McQuillan also added some flair and skill of the bench which also helped stop City attacking more often but it wasn’t to be as Corrie Sullivan put the ball into the back of the net with the last kick of the game giving a Peasy Derby loss. Again, no time to dwell and it’s time to dust ourselves off and get right back into the match against Rangers on Sunday.

Strong followings from the Red and yellow army have helped our girls out a lot this season. It would be great to see as many of you as possible for this Glasgow Derby to help make Petershill a fortress.

🗞 Team News

Demi Falconer has missed the last few games due to injury and has been working hard to recover. A late fitness test is needed to see if she can make the matchday squad however.

Jenna Ferguson and Megan Cunningham are unfortunately unavailable and are ineligible under the terms of their loan agreement from Rangers, which is unfortunate as both have performed very well in the last couple of matches.

Some more rotation could be seen to prevent some further knocks and niggles by Brian Graham, who himself will be serving the final game of his suspension on Sunday.
With all that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field their best possible side heading into this fixture as we welcome Rangers for a Glasgow derby.
