🆚 Our Opponents: Spartans

Spartans come into this fixture with some confidence having progressed to the next round of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over SWF east side Glenrothes Strollers on Sunday afternoon. They return to league action where they recently suffered a 6-0 defeat at Petershill against league leaders Glasgow City as they look to rebound. They currently sit 8th with 13 points, a place below PTW in 7th.

Thistle have faced Spartans twice this season already, walking away victors in both. A 2-1 win in the reverse fixture in Edinburgh saw Caley Gibb, a summer signing from Spartans, and Tiree Burchill, who’s strike won the SWPL goal of the month, on the scoreline before a Sky Sports Cup 3-2 win a few weeks later.

Always an exciting fixture between the sides with a lot at stake with just 3 points separating the sides.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle’s Scottish Cup matchup against Glasgow City was always going to be difficult. Having had a tough roll of the dice against the side top of the table, Brian Graham opted to keep the 343 he deployed against Hibernian going into this one.

It was an uphill battle to start with as veteran Lisa Evans caught the ball sweet on the edge of the box and fired in a great volley past Jeni Currie to give the visitors the lead. With that being said, it was a very end to end game. Chances came for both sides with Carla Boyce putting a chance wide for Thistle and Tiree Burchill having a few good runs thwarted by Claire Walsh and Chloe Warrington. City didn’t really create much either as they attempted to use their wingers but Lisa Forrest stayed relatively quiet, despite hitting the bar, and Caley Gibb kept Emily Whelan at bay.

The second half was a big improvement to the match. Georgia Gray, fresh off her involvement with Scotland’s u19s, slotted into the back 3 and didn’t look out of place. Her creativity allowed the Jags to make some good runs while keeping a steady line. It would be an Amy Bulloch corner to make the difference though as Lucy Sinclair knocked it against Aleigh Gambone’s arm to give Thistle a penalty. Cara Henderson kept her penalty scoring feats alive as she sent Lee Gibson the wrong way and gave Thistle a much deserved equaliser.

The away side showed why they are top of the table though and heavy pressure saw goals from Emily Whelan and Nicole Kozlova give City the win and knock PTW out of the cup. Focus now goes fully on the league now as we continue our charge towards a 3rd successive top six finish.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army help our girls massively. We have a big charge heading into Christmas with two home matches upcoming. Your noise to back the team on this cold Christmas night could be all the difference as well look to gain all 3 points.

🗞 Team News

Georgia Gray’s suspension begins for her Red against Hibs meaning she misses out on this fixture. Rebecca McAllister and Kodie Hay continue to make progress on their respective injuries but remain out for this fixture. Jenna Ferguson also misses out following her injury against Glasgow City a couple months back.

With that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field the best possible side heading into this fixture with a game at home against Spartans.
