💻️Highlights and reaction post match
Queen’s Park have had a difficult season as they sit 11th in the table with 7 points. Having won the SWPL2 in convincing fashion last week, they have struggled to replicate that form following promotion.
QP have had a change in management team since our last meeting with the Spiders with Iain Robinson now leading the Glasgow outfit. He has attempted to implement his style of football within the club as they prepare for a difficult few months as the threat of relegation looms over them.
QP have lost several of their key players in the last few months as well with Leah Tweedie returning to Hibs following a loan spell while Olivia King, Emma Craig and club captain Ellie Kane swapped Ochilview for Petershill as they made the switch to Partick Thistle in January. Robinson has recruited well with his limited resources as Summer Christie and Emma McMurdo joined from fellow strugglers Dundee United, Ex-Jag Dionne Brown made the move from Kilmarnock following a successful spell in the SWPL2 while youngsters Lily Boyce and Sophie Rutherford made the temporary switch from Rangers.
There is no shortage of club connections within the club with the trio of January signings as mentioned above while former Jags Jordan McLintock, Rosie McQuillan and Rachel Wright all play for the home side these days.
Thistle welcomed Rangers to Peasy knowing full well it would be tough. Following Celtic and Glasgow City drawing a couple days prior, Rangers had an opportunity to close the gap with a win against PTW. Brian Graham’s side started in a 4-1-4-1 formation, a game plan that has worked and helped frustrate opponents in the past.
While the visitors controlled the tempo and possession, it would actually be Thistle who would get the first opportunity of the game as a brilliant ball set Tiree Burchill on a path towards goal. The young forward couldn’t do much more as she picked the corner well and had it not been for the heroics of Victoria Esson, we would have been looking at 1-0 Thistle. That seemed to cause a shock to the system for Rangers as they would come at the PTW defence with a flurry of offence following this, utilising Kirsty MacLean and Tessel Middag’s long ball abilities to find Brogan Hay and Mia McAuley down the flanks with the later putting Rangers up 1-0. 2 more followed shortly after in quick succession as Rangers lead 3-0 at the break, a scoreline undeserving.
The second half saw Thistle frustrate the visitors again as Georgia Gray, a half time substitute, used her frame and ability well to hold off her former teammates and attempt to create chances. It was the final touches that would let down Thistle in this sense as they were unable to break the very strong backline of Middag, Kathy Hill and Leah Eddie. It would again be a flurry of offense in the final 10 minutes that would be PTW’s downfall as Hill grabbed a goal from a corner, Kirsty Howatt, who had threatened all day finally found her goal and a late sixth from Camille Lafaix ended the day 6-0 to the current league leaders.
Despite the heavy scoreline, Brian Graham was very proud of his team for their performance that evening. There was plenty of positives and many other teams would have fell to higher scorelines in different situations. The result ultimately confirmed our spot in the bottom half of the table, our first time outwith the top six in 3 seasons but a chance to improve further as the gaffer set the goal of going unbeaten for the final few months.
Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army have helped our girls massively. Whilst the squad are disappointed to not finish in our 3rd consecutive top 6, your support has not gone unnoticed by the players and staff alike. Our final game before the split finds a Glasgow derby and we’d love to see as many of you as possible.
Rebecca McAllister made her return to the squad against Rangers as a late substitute so is in line to get some more minutes in this fixture. Caley Gibb, Cara Henderson and Ellie Kane have been working hard following their respective injuries and could face late fitness tests ahead of this game. Jenna Ferguson unfortunately remains out injured for this game.
With that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field the best possible side heading into this fixture with a game against Queen’s Park.
