Partick Thistle made it the perfect Premier Sports Group B campaign thanks to a 3-1 success against Ross County at the Global Energy Stadium in Dingwall. The fourth win in four group games was secured by superb goals from Robbie Crawford, Logan Chalmers and Ben Stanway with the Highland success booking a place in the last sixteen and it could even be a seeded spot dependant on Sunday’s St Mirren and Ayr United game.
Head Coach Mark Wilson listed the same starting line-up as the one that defeated Queen of the South 2-0 on Tuesday night with new loan recruit, goalkeeper Josh Clarke, on the substitutes’ bench.
The Jags wearing their new ‘Cricket Cream’ Away Kit took kick-off with Crawford getting things going however play was quickly stopped when Luke McBeth was pulled up for an aerial challenge.
McBeth was harshly penalised again a minute later however Lewis Budinauckas rose and clutched Jay Henderson’s free-kick.
Thistle’s first attack almost brought a goal as Tony Watt found Ts’oanelo Lets’osa who brought out a save from Ross Laidlaw who stuck out a foot to keep out the midfielder’s low 10-yard shot finding the net.
As the visitors continued to press Paddy Reading floated in an effort from the left that looked to be dropping into a dangerous area before County cleared.
The Maryhill Men survived a scare on 12 minutes when Ronan Hale picked up on a loose ball 30 yards from Budinauckas’ goal and chipped the goalkeeper only to see his shot hit the bar and rise into the air and hit the bar again before being saved.
Just after the quarter of an hour mark Chalmers twisted and turned past Len O’Sullivan before swinging over a left footed cross from the right that looked to be reaching the head of Crawford however, he was gently eased out of the way with Referee Lee not interested in penalty shouts.
On 20 minutes Watt sent Chalmers scampering clear on the right flank and he darted towards goal before seeing a curling drive blocked by Laidlaw’s legs.
Watt was on the end of an aerial knock seven minutes later and returned to action with a ‘Lee Ashcroft’ style bandage however the striker showed no signs of it slowing him down on the half hour mark as he battled clear in the box before seeing a shot booted clear.
Skipper Ashcroft showed his defensive skills on 33 minutes when he stood strong to block a Hale shot after the home striker turned and fired fiercely at the Thistle goal.
Thistle raced to the other end and only a perfectly timed Declan Gallagher sliding tackle prevented Chalmers firing in a drive after Fitzpatrick had released him.
A minute from the break the opening goal arrived, and it came from Wilson’s side and what a fine goal it was. McBeth moved forward with the ball 30 yards from the home goal and step inside team-mate Watt before sliding a diagonal through ball into the path of CRAWFORD who had timed a run in-behind the Staggies defence to perfection and he controlled with one touch before slotting past Laidlaw from 14 yards,
Half time – Ross County 0 Partick Thistle 1
Reading won the first corner of the second half when his cross was turned behind Laidlaw’s goal with the play stopped after Dan O’Reilly headed the dead ball back across goal as Crompton had picked up a head knock.
Left back Reading was involved again offensively on 50 minutes when he sent over a low ball that flashed across the six-yard line without finding a Thistle boot.
Just before the hour mark Ashcroft made another brave block as he slid in to block a Dean Cornelius drive from 20 yards.
McBeth was almost involved in a goal for a second time 17 minutes into the restart as he swivelled himself clear 20 yards out and swept in a shot that beat Laidlaw but also beat the goalkeeper’s right-hand post.
There was a second goal on 64 minutes, and it was another cracker from The Jags as CHALMERS drifted in from the right and from the edge of the box, he curled a left footer high into the far corner.
There was a scare shortly afterwards when Crompton headed wide from close-range with Budinauckas showing strong hands when he dealt with an Aaron Lyall drive 12 minutes from time.
On 83 minutes it could have been three as Watt pierced the Ross County rear-guard to find substitute Stanway who hit a strong shot goalward only for Laidlaw to block.
The pair combined again a minute later, and a goal came, with Watt accepting a rolled pass from the left from Chalmers and slipping it two feet further along the 18-yard line where STANWAY curled in a low first time shot.
County grabbed a goal back in 88 minutes when Jordan White dived to head home a right-wing cross.

It's an excellent afternoon in Dingwall for Thistle who complete their Premier Sports Group matches with a fourth straight win. This one the most impressive of them all.
Watch out for the draw for the next round tomorrow.
A perfectly timed Ashcroft challenge halts a County attack as we go deep into added time.
Thistle break after the corner is cleared and a Stanway cross is hacked clear.
No clean sheet for Budinauckas as White gets a touch to a cross from the right and his header goes into the corner of the net.
It's a Watt/Stanway combination again and this time Stanway is not be denied as his low drive from the edge of the box finds the bottom corner of the net.
Watt picks up the ball deep inside the County half and finds Stanway inside the box who is denied by Laidlaw who pushes his shot away.
Under pressure Budinauckas makes a really good catch.
Crowd: 1,740, 411 Thistle fans. Those 400 plus Thistle fans sound as if they are enjoying themselves but still football to be played in this game.
A Lyall shot is straight at Budinauckas. What it lacked in direction it had in power and Budinauckas is happy to grab hold.
It's Fitzpatrick that Lawless comes on for. It's been another excellent shift from the Thistle number 21.
More activity on the Thgistle bench. Lawless this time getting ready to come on. Chalmers looked heavy legged on a Thistle counter attack. His excellent afternoon might be near an end.
McBeth heads the corner clear.
Looks like some activity on the Thistle bench. Stanway getting ready to come on.
Thistle never properly manage to get the corner clear after Budinauckas gets a punch to it. A cross comes over from the left and a Crompton header drops wide. County's best chance since Hale hit the bar in the first half.
That's a bit special and worth the long journey to Dingwall alone. Chalmers has the ball at the right hand corner of the Country box and curls an absolute cracker high into the opposite corner.
A Watt cross to the back post has just a shade too much on it for Logan to get on the end of.
McBeth does well to find space for a shot from just outside the County box and he is only narrowly off target as the ball goes wide of Laidlaw's right hand post.
Thistle again deal with the County corner.
Ashcroft blocks at the expense of a corner and looks to hurt himself in the process but is able to continue without treatment.
Thistle defend the corner well.
It's a really nice ball from Reading across the face of the County goal but there isn't anyone there to get on the end of it.
Fitzpatrick's corner is headed clear at the front post. Thistle try and keep things alive but the referee spots an infringement and gives County a free kick.
It's been an excellent first half performance from Thistle with Robbie Crawford's strike almost on the stroke of half-time giving Thistle a deserved interval lead.
Into added time at the end of the first half. Could be two or three minutes of that.
It's a delightful goal that has Thistle in front. A super pass from McBeth is perfectly weighted for Crawford who times his run to perfection and when left with Laidlaw to beat he makes no mistake with a composed finish.
Couple of important blocks from Thistle as County build up some pressure on the Thistle goal.
Chalmers' touch after picking up a Fitzpatrick pass is just a little heavy and that allows a defender to get across and clear.
Ashcroft makes a really important block after a sharp turn in the box from Clark.
Laidlaw is able to claim a Logan cross after some initial good work on the right from Watt.
Thistle are briefly down to ten but Watt is back on.
Watt is having a bandage put on his head following a clash of head with a County player.
Docherty sends a shot high and wide of the Thistle goal.
Thistle close again with Laidlaw denying Chalmers.
A Chalmers shot smacks off a defender.
A Chalmers cross from the right is just a shade too high for Crawford to get his head to. It's been a really good, open first 15 minutes.
County so close to opening the scoring. Fitzpatrick's loose pass is seized upon by Hale. He spots Budianuckas off his line and from just inside the Thistle half he attempts to chip the Thistle keeper. He's successful but a fraction too high with the ball coming off the bar before falling nicely into the arms of Budinauckas.
Chalmers' corner is flicked clear for a Thistle throw on the far side.
Emslie fires in a cross that Budinauckas beats away.
Nearly an opener for Thistle. Watt finds Lets'osa to his right ands his shot is saved by the foot of Laidlaw.
The free kick comes into the box but it is an easy take for Budinauckas.
County win a free kick wide on the right and will have an early chance to test the Thistle defence.
Thistle kick the game off.
The Premier Sports Cup group matches come to a conclusion this weekend and Thistle go into their final fixture away to Ross County at the top of Group B with a maximum 9 points from 3 games played.
Qualification for the knock-out stages though is far from guaranteed.
If Thistle win or avoid defeat across the course of the 90 minutes they will progress to the knock out stages as group winners.
A Ross County win in 90 minutes, however, and they will top the group and we'll be checking the other groups to see if we are one of the three best placed runners-up.
An intriguing afternoon is store then as a decent sized travelling support take their seats.
Head Coach Mark Wilson's starting eleven is unchanged for Tuesday's fixture with Queen of the South. The only change coming on the bench with the addition of new loan signing Josh Clarke.
