🆚 Our Opponents: Spartans

Spartans come into this match with a lot at stake. They currently sit in 9th with 36 points while Montrose are hot on their tails with 34 points in the final relegation spot.

This match could decide their fate on Sunday and whether they will have their top flight status next season.

Spartans have had a mixed bag of results since the split as they started off well winning 4 in a row before trailing off. The Edinburgh outfit suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Jags when they came to Petershill in April as Tiree Burchill scored the only goal of the game to secure all 3 points for the Jags.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle’s final home game of the season saw us welcome Queen’s Park for a final Glasgow Derby of the season in a must win game for the Jags. The girls knew what they needed going into this game and were determined to make the most of it.

Reverting back to a back 4 formation, Thistle played with a high intensity which put Queen’s Park on notice straight away. Things took a turn for the worse for the Spiders as Murron Cunningham got a red card for violent conduct on Rachel Donaldson just before the 20th minute. From that free kick, Cheryl McCulloch looked to have opened the scoring but the referee didn’t think the full ball crossed the line therefore play continued. It wouldn’t be long before the Jags would open the scoring after a fantastic team goal which was capped off by top scorer Carla Boyce.

Boyce would double her tally later on in the first half with an excellent penalty to make it 2-0 to Thistle and one step closer to safety. The second half saw Thistle continue to press and attack but some good defending by the likes of Lily Boyce and Morgan Hay prevented Thistle from scoring any more. Tiree Burchill would hit the post while Hannah Robinson narrowly missed the target with a superb effort. A 2-0 win in the end for Thistle, securing top flight football next season and a chance to finish 7th with a win against Spartans.

A special moment took place in the closing stages of the match as Clare Docherty, who announced her retirement last week, made her 135th and final appearance in red and yellow. She came on to replace Tiree Burchill in the final minute of the match despite carrying an injury she suffered against Dundee United, and in True Doc fashion tried to create a chance despite her pain. Congratulations on a wonderful career, Doc. Once a Jag, Always a Jag.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army helped our girls massively this year. We want to end this season on a high against Spartans and, for one last time this campaign, would love to see a sea of supporters in the capital.

🗞 Team News

Imogen Longcake could return to the squad having been working hard following a couple weeks out while Rebecca McAllister still remains out with her injury.

With that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field the best possible side heading into this fixture with a game on the road against Spartans.
