With Celtic making a shock exit from the competition yesterday evening this season’s Scottish League Cup tournament just got that bit more interesting. There are still many hurdles for the eventual winners to overcome but the belief of all the remaining teams that they can emulate St Mirren’s triumph of last season grew just that bit stronger over night.
Our own third round tie away to Dundee United could scarcely be tougher but when [link:HOME] caught up with manager Alan Archibald yesterday afternoon he was looking forward to the challenge ahead.
“There is no doubt that we face a very difficult game indeed. Dundee United have a whole host of attacking players that can cause you problems. We feel though that we are capable of going to Tannadice and getting a win; we want to do well in this competition.”
Alan continued;
“We’ve already played United in the league this season and, with Jackie McNamara and others returning to Firhill there was a lot of hype surrounding that match. There hasn’t been anywhere near the same level of attention for this game which I think is a good thing. It’s meant that we just been able to get on with things and prepare for the game without any fuss.”
The manager does have a couple of injury problems ahead of the trip to Dundee; the team heading up early afternoon.
“Jordan McMillan is still out and there is a doubt surrounding Stuart Bannigan. On the plus side it was nothing more than a heavy cramp that Isaac Osbourne suffering from when he came off towards the end of Saturday’s game and he should be fine. I actually thought that all three of our substitutes did well when they came on at the weekend and we’ve other players that are desperate to get involved. With three games in seven days we will make the best use of the squad.”
