MATCH PREVIEW: Celtic (A)

This Sunday 22nd  January, PTWFC take on Celtic at the Excelsior Stadium for a 16:10 kick off.

Thistle come off the back of a 3-0 victory against Spartans in the SWPL1 in the first league game of 2023 in a dominant performance. Brian Graham’s women brought the fight to Spartans as they finally ended their string of draws against the Edinburgh side and what a way to do it. Now we have the tough task of playing against one of the top sides in the country in a Glasgow derby that the girls are raring to get out for.

A win here for Brian Graham’s side would be a huge statement and a massive step towards a place in the top six as we look to prove that we can meet the challenge against this strong Celtic squad.

🆚 Our Opponents: Celtic

Celtic have had a good season thus far, picking up 35 points from a possible 42 in SWPL1.

Sitting in 2nd position, they’ll be looking to grab all 3 points and tighten the gap between themselves and Glasgow City at the top after they dropped 2 points in a 0-0 draw with Motherwell midweek. Celtic currently lie 4 places and 16 points above us.

There are several club links between the squads this season. Megan Cunningham, Cheryl McCulloch and Rachel Donaldson are all former Celtic players, while Abbie Ferguson is currently on loan from the Hoops therefore is ineligible for this tie.

📈Thistle so far

A fantastic showing against Spartans has been great for the morale within the camp. Goals from Cara Henderson and Rachel Donaldson in the first half meant that they added to their goal tallies for the season, much like they did against Queens Park the week prior. Abbie Ferguson was also on the scoresheet once more, which will be seen as a big loss without her attacking presence due to her ineligibility against her parent club.

Strong followings from the Red and Yellow Army so far this season have really helped our girls, and hopefully more of the Thistle faithful come along to support their Jags as the league campaign continues out in Airdrie against the Hoops.

🗞 Team News

Brian Graham is left with a big task to put out his team against this string Celtic side but all the girls are raring to go for this challenge and show what they’re all about. Taylor McGlashen is now back within the ranks having continued her training over her ankle injury that sidelined her for large parts of the season. Freya MacDonald continues rehab and is hopeful of joining up with the squad agains soon but this match comes too soon for her. Abbie Ferguson can’t play against her parent team but new signing Imogen Longcake goes straight into squad.
