🆚 Our Opponents: Celtic

Celtic have started the season well having won the league in dramatic fashion last season as they currently sit 4th on 13 points after 5 games.

Celtic managed to keep the core of their squad yet did lose a few key staples from their title winning squad. Both Shen Menglu and Shen Mengyu made the switch to Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, Natasha Flint and Paula Partido departed after their successful loan spells while Tiree Buchill joined the Jags at the end of her contract with the hoops.

The Celts have been busy in the transfer window however as they picked up twin sisters
Mathilde and Signe Carstens from Fortuna Hjorring, Durham’s Saoirse Noonan, who scored an important hat trick during Celtic’s UWCL qualification run, as well as Shannon McGregor from Hibernian. They also this week added Thistle defender Emma Lawton as she moved on to fulfil her dreams of full-time football.

Thistle have proven themselves against Celtic in recent seasons and our girls are rating to go against Elena Sidiku’s side. We look forward to welcoming Celtic to Kirkintilloch for this Glasgow derby.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle’s game at Firhill the week before didn’t go the way the girls intended. That being said, they knew playing at another big stadium in the form of Fir Park was an opportunity to right those wrongs, and that they did.

Thistle were on the front foot from the minute the referee blew the whistle as they pressured the Motherwell defence. This pressure paid off in the 18th minute as Tiree Burchill grabbed her second in Thistle colours latching onto a loose ball and providing a calm and composed finish.

It was a game that featured many goal of the season contenders and the first of those came just before halftime in the form of Hannah Robinson. Having been denied a penalty opportunity a few moments before, the winger took a shot from distance after Amy Bulloch capitalised on a mistake by the Well goalie and put the ball in the back of the net.

Thistle’s goals after this also came in the same vein as Cara Henderson again spotted Emily Mutch off her line and struck from distance rattling her shot off the bar and then the keeper to trickle into the net, a goal that saw our own goalkeeper Jeni Currie get an assist. The bangers would stop at number four as Emma Lawton struck an off balance weak foot effort in the 90th minute against her former employers to grant a 4-0 win for the Jags. To quote our very own gaffer Brian Graham: “That’s what it takes to play for Partick Thistle”.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army help our girls massively. With the work at Petershill, we understand exactly how frustrating it has been not having a permanent home this season but our game against Glasgow City was packed with Red and Yellow at Kirky. We would love to replicate that Glasgow Derby again and see as many Jags supporters as possible come Sunday afternoon.

🗞 Team News

Cheryl McCulloch made her return to the matchday squad last week against Motherwell and is looking to make her return to the pitch. Kodie Hay remains out for this fixture as she continues her recovery from her broken foot while Courtney Stewart is making progress following her injury against Rangers but is still unfortunately unavailable for this fixture against Celtic.

With that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field the best possible side heading into this fixture with an important game against Celtic.
