MATCH PREVIEW: Dundee Utd (A)

This Sunday 12th March, PTWFC take on Dundee United at Gussie Park for a 16:10 kick off.

Thistle come off the back of a 4-3 victory against Aberdeen in a whirlwind of a match in the SWPL1. The girls put in an inspiring performance showing great determination to come back having been 2-0 down to get all 3 points.

A result here for Brian Graham’s side would be massive as it would achieve our goal and secure us a top 6 place.

Our Opponents: Dundee United

Dundee United have had a tough season, picking up 17 points so far in the SWPL1 from a possible 63.

Sitting in 9th position, 3 places and 11 points below the jags, they’ll be looking to grab all three points as they look to secure their place in the SWPL1 next season. Dundee United will be in the bottom half following the split regardless of this result however competition remains tight towards the relegation zone.

The previous match between the clubs ended in a 1-0 win for the Jags at Petershill Park with Cara Henderson picking up the only goal in the match.

Thistle so far

The match against Aberdeen had it all. From an Aberdeen red card, to a Claire Adams scoring directly from a corner as she continues to make an impact following her return from injury, to Aberdeen scoring when Megan Cunningham caught the ball and it was determined to be over the line despite pleas from the entire Thistle squad, it was a match that had your heart in your mouth as a thistle fan. All 3 points being secured was a sign of intent from our girls. Their never say die attitude kept them going right till the very end.

Kim Murphy, who got a fantastic assist for a Cara Henderson header, spoke about this at the end of the game, discussing how the heart and the desire was the reason why the team managed to get the victory. Brian Graham had a lot of praise for his squad during what he labelled as an emotional rollercoaster of a game but again highlighted that one word that he has said since the very start of the campaign: belief.

Some fantastic performances from the entire Thistle squad against Aberdeen on Sunday. As mentioned previously, Claire Adams continues to make an impact off the bench as she continues to improve fitness following her spell on the sidelines. Cara Henderson added another to her tally for the season, taking her to 7 so far this season. Imogen Longcake made it two in two at Petershill as she rounded the keeper and tapped it in. Linzi Taylor had arguably the pick of the bunch however as she picked her spot and scored a fantastic free kick for the goal that kick started the comeback. Every single member of the squad worked their socks off on Sunday against Aberdeen. They want to achieve top 6 and It all comes down to this Sunday against Dundee United.

Strong followings from the Red and Yellow Army so far this season have really helped our girls, and there’s not a time more important for the Thistle faithful to come along and support their Jags. We hope to see as many of the thistle faithful make the trip to Gussie Park as possible as we want to secure that top 6 place.

Team News

Rebecca McGowan and Cheryl McCulloch will likely  remain out following their respective injuries against Rangers nearly a fortnight ago. Other than that, it appears to be a full squad available for Brian Graham to select from. All the girls have been working tirelessly in training to secure their place in the starting lineup for what is the biggest game of the season so far.
