🆚 Our Opponents: Queens Park

Queen’s Park have had a great season in the SWPL2 sitting top of the table with 40 points, 10 clear of Kilmarnock in 2nd. Having won 5-1 against Glasgow Women on Sunday, head coache Craig Joyce will be hoping to cause an upset heading into this fixture having beat Bonnyrigg Rose 2-0 to progress to this point.

Queen’s Park have won a lot of plaudits for their performances this season as they look set for promotion to the SWPL1 next season. Their squad possesses a lot of talented individuals such as Ellie Kane and Abby Callaghan who have really taken the league in their stride this season.

They’ve also added to their ranks over the course of the January transfer window bringing in the likes of Olivia King and Hannah Cunningham to bolster their squad.

Last year, The Jags beat The Spiders 5-2 at New Tinto Park in the same competition that saw a memorable night for Leah Robinson who grabbed two for the Jags that evening.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle made the trip to Montrose with a clear vision in their mind: win the match, hope
Aberdeen lose to Rangers and secure top six for the second year running. Brian Graham opted to field an unchanged lineup from the historic cup victory against Hibs the week before and confidence was sky high.

This confidence took a dent almost immediately though as Montrose took an early lead with a great goal from Jade McLaren, shocking the visitors. Knowing how difficult Montrose is as an away ground and exactly what they are capable of, Thistle knew they had to adapt, especially taking such an early goal to put us 1-0 down.

The Jags would grab their equaliser 10 minutes later as Clare Docherty found space and riffled the ball into the back of the net bringing terms level. Another 10 minutes after that, much like how she did against Dundee United last season, Cara Henderson scored the goal to put us ahead in what would prove to be the goal that got us the victory and top 6 once again, thanks to Rangers getting victory over Aberdeen.

A fantastic achievement from the girls to be the only part time team in the top 6 for the second year running, and securing with 4 games to spare is an even bigger credit to the playing and coaching staff.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army have really helped our girls in recent times and a place in the next round of the cup awaits us with a victory over Queen’s Park. We broke our attendance record at Petershill Park last time out with 604 therefore we would love to see as many of you as we approach this Glasgow Derby.

🗞 Team News

Almost a full squad available for Brian Graham this weekend for this cup fixture. New signing Aimee Anderson made a cameo off the bench against Montrose and looked very sharp however, is cup tied for this game therefore will have to wait longer for her full debut. A touch of rotation could also be on the cards with some big league matches approaching against top 6 rivals.

With this huge cup tie approaching, and a chance for a spot in the quarter finals at stake, it will be up to Brian Graham and the rest of the management team to field their best possible side heading into this fixture.
