🆚 Our Opponents: Rangers

Rangers come into this new season having finished in 2nd place in the league narrowly losing out the league title to Celtic, who secured the title on the last day of the season.

Rangers have recruited well bringing in the likes of Leah Eddie from Hibs, Olivia McLoughlin on a permanent following her loan spell for the second half of last season and Southampton duo Laura Rafferty and Katie Wilkinson, who grabbed four goals in Rangers’ opener against Aberdeen.

This recruitment alongside being able to retain some influential players such as Rio Hardy, Kirsty Howat and Tessel Middag proved to be key having lost two big names in the form of league cup final hero Rachel Rowe and Scottish Cup final scorer Rachel McLauchlin, who made the switch to Brighton.

Thistle picked up a couple players from Rangers during our recruitment over the summer with Georgia Gray making the move to Red and yellow while Jenna Ferguson opted to join on a permanent basis following her loan spell at Petershill last season. With our first away day of the 24/25 season upon us, the girls are eager to prove themselves against a tough Rangers side.

📈Thistle so far

Thistle’s first game of the season didn’t quite get off to the start that was hoped for. Playing at Lochburn Park on a temporary basis due to the work ongoing at Petershill Park, our old venue kicked off this new campaign under the sun.

A difficult start to the match ensued as Grant Scott’s Hibs side came straight out the gate applying pressure to the Thistle defence as former Jag Abbie Ferguson opened the scoring for the visitors. 1-0 down at half time seemed to be fortunate with Hibs having plenty more chances and struggling to find the back of the net.

Hibs quickly got the second half going as Ferguson found Tegan Bowie for the Hibees to make it 2-0 just a few minutes into the second half. Determined to get back into the game however, last season’s POTY Emma Lawton pulled one back for Thistle as PTW finally found their footing in the match. Further chances followed, none better than Caley Gibb’s strike which rattled the bar, and unfortunately the full time whistle struck leaving the score 2-1 to our visitors from the capital.

Brian Graham touched on this after the match saying how it took too long to get going in the match but felt unfortunate that we couldn’t grab at least a point from the game but knew there was hard work to follow especially with Rangers being the next fixture.

Strong Followings from the Red and Yellow army helped our girls massively last season, and even at our home away from home a great number of Jags fans turned out to support the team in our opening fixture. A tough away day follows as we’ll look to bring the fight against one of the best teams in the country.

🗞 Team News

Carla Boyce is welcomed back for this fixture having been unavailable last weekend. Several players made their first competitive starts in Thistle colours and are in line to carry on.

With that being said, it will be up to the gaffer and the rest of the management team to field the best possible side heading into this fixture with the chance to prove ourselves against last season’s runners up.
