MATCH PREVIEW: Spartans (H)

This Sunday 15th January, PTWFC take on Spartans at Petershill Park for a 1pm kick off.

Thistle come off the back of an impressive 5-2 victory against Queens Park in the Scottish Cup in the first game of 2023 in a performance that was deserving of the scoreline. Brian Graham’s women progressed to the next round of the tournament in a thoroughly entertaining game. He’ll be looking to have his girls repeat their goal scoring efforts as we welcome Spartans to Petershill.

A win here for Thistle would be a huge confidence boost for the girls as we look to cement our place in the top half of the table and bounce back from the defeat last time out in the league.

🆚 Our Opponents: Spartans

Spartans have had a decent season thus far, picking up 13 points from a possible 39 in SWPL1.

Sitting in 8th position, they’ll be looking to grab all 3 points and tighten the gap between themselves and us, 2 places and 3 points above them.

Spartans have already kicked off their league action in 2023 and  were in action midweek, losing 4-0 to league leaders Glasgow City.

Matches between the sides in SWPL1 have been close affairs over the last two seasons with the last 4 meetings finishing as draws, with 3 of those being 0-0s.

📈Thistle so far

A fantastic showing against Queens Park has really lifted the morale within the camp. Great goals from Abbie Ferguson and Rachel Donaldson added to their goal tallies for the season. Cara Henderson, who recently extended her deal with the Jags, was also on the scoresheet.

The star of the show against the spiders was undoubtedly Leah Robinson, who bagged a brace in her first start for the club and was recognised as one of SM Media’s players of the round. Let’s hope our girls can recapture those goal scoring plaudits and take all 3 points in Sunday’s affair.

Brian Graham this week spoke of how the followings from the Red and Yellow Army was important for his side and so far this season have really helped our girls, and hopefully more of the Thistle faithful come along to support their Jags as the league campaign gets underway once more.

🗞 Team News

Brian Graham will hopefully have almost a full squad again for Sunday’s match but is waiting for news on a number of players after Sunday’s tough fought match with Queens Park.. Freya McDonald will unfortunatly miss out with injury but on the good news after returning to training and taking part in the warm up against Queens Park, defender Taylor McGlashan could return to the match day squad for the first time this season.
