Partick Thistle’s 2019/21 City of Glasgow Cup campaign continued as they took on Celtic Colts at Firhill this afternoon. The Jags had amassed 11 points in seven games already and knew that a win would put them in a good position at the top of the table with the teams below still to play games in hand.
The Thistle line-up was as follows; Luke Scullion, Calum Wilson, Oliver Black, Joe McDonald, Bradley Renfrew, James Lyon, Billy Owens, Charlie Reilly, Ewan Cameron, Blair Lyons and Gospel Ocholi. On the bench were Mason McCready, Lorenzo Giovanazzi, Chris Bell and Matthew Collins.
The away side started on top and got their rewards for a positive opening period as they took the lead on seven minutes. A long ball forward drew Luke Scullion to the edge of the box where he did enough to stop the Hoops initial advances but unfortunately for the hosts it dropped straight to Luca Connell who fired home with a first time strike.
That lead was doubled in the 16th minute when another long ball towards the edge of Thistle’s box caused issues. This time the ball came to Celtic’s Cameron Harper who managed to control the pass and turn before forcing a low shot into the bottom corner to give his side a cushion.
Just before the half hour mark a third was added. The Bhoys made progress down the right flank and managed to get a low cut back towards the penalty spot. The delivery made its way through to Owen Moffat who, from 10 yards out, slotted home via Scullion’s gloves and the inside of the post.
The second half was a very low key affair with the game all but over already, however, Celtic were able to make it four with just over 20 minutes left on the clock. Cameron Harper cut inside from the left and took a pop at goal with a deflection off a defender taking the ball over the head of Luke Scullion and into the net.
That was how things finished as Celtic moved level on points with the Jags with a game less played and Thistle are now left waiting to see how the rest of the results pan out to see where they’ll finish in the table.
