Everyone at Partick Thistle Football Club is greatly saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Adam Strachan, at the age of 35.
A product of the Partick Thistle youth system, all at Firhill had high hopes for the teenage Strachan, the likeable young winger blessed with great pace and a bag of tricks which haunted many a full back.
Making his Jags debut towards the end of the 2003/04 Premier League season, Strachan went on to make 111 appearances in red and yellow, scoring 5 times. He was part of the side which won the remarkable play-off final victory in Peterhead, before leaving the club a year later for Ross County.
A nomadic career then beckoned, as Strachan played for a host of clubs in the professional and junior ranks in Scotland, his last port of call being BSC Glasgow in season 2018/19. Adam did not have his troubles to seek during those years, many of those incidents being of high profile, but it is to his credit that in recent years he attempted to give back – including via Partick Thistle Charitable Trust – by educating young footballers based on his experiences as to how they might avoid making some of the mistakes he had.
Since his tragic passing, the huge number of glowing tributes from former team mates, including many ex Jags, shows the high esteem with which he was held. Perhaps the greatest tragedy is that Adam was able to make his team mates enjoy the beautiful game even more so thanks to sharing a dressing room with him, but was unable to find that level of pleasure and peace of mind for himself.
Partick Thistle FC chief executive Gerry Britton, who gave Strachan his Premier League debut in 2004, said: “It really is horrendous news and first and foremost our thoughts are with Adam’s family and those closest to him.
“He was one hell of a talent. Man of the match in his debut in the Premiership, Adam was able to run with the ball under control quicker than the rest of the players could run without it.
“It is of course sad and frustrating that he was unable to achieve his full footballing potential but other stories are for another time. Rest in peace, Adam, you were one of a kind.”
The thoughts of everyone connected with Partick Thistle FC are with Adam and his family at this dreadfully sad time.
