In a month where the team scored 13 times in five matches and picked up three wins in four league games there were no shortage of candidates for the McCrea Financial Services September Player of the Month, however, the Thistle faithful had a clear pick for the prize.
Following another month full of goals and assists, Steven Lawless is our award winner with the midfielder earning around 70% of the overall vote.
Lawless started the month with the equalising goal at Cappielow as the Jags came from behind to take all three points against Morton, also involving himself in the build-up for the go-ahead goal. He followed that up with another goal against Queen of the South in SPFL Trust Trophy, converting from 12 yards in front of the John Lambie Stand.
Back in league action the following week, he produced one of his most memorable performances in a Thistle shirt as the team won 4-0 at Somerset Park. With the Maryhill men leading 1-0 in a tightly-balanced contest, Lawless arrowed in a stunning second goal to extend the red and yellow lead before then adding another to make it three. He capped off a spectacular night in Ayrshire with the assist for the fourth goal, finished by Tomi Adeloye.
September ended with a 3-0 win against Dunfermline Athletic at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill and unsurprisingly Lawless was heavily involved in the team’s success again. It was the number 11’s teasing cross that was headed home by Kerr McInroy as Kris Doolan’s side moved up to third place in the Championship table.
Upon receiving the award, Lawless said:
“It’s great to have won the award again so thanks to the fans for voting for me. I feel like I’m playing really well at the moment and that’s helping us get results which is the ultimate goal every time we’re out on the pitch.
“There’s definitely still room for improvement for me and for the team so we’ll keep working hard but everyone has seen what we’re capable of so if we can find that more consistently then we’ll be doing well.”
